PageSets Knowledge Base

lumicorelabs edited this page Aug 15, 2026 · 11 revisions

1. Getting Started

PageSets helps you reopen the same set of websites—already organized into tab groups—in seconds.

Instead of rebuilding your tabs every morning, create a PageSet once using a simple Plain Text or JSON file. You can then relaunch them anytime with a single click (or a keyboard shortcut, if enabled).

What you get

  • Repeatable Workspaces — Tab groups open in a new, dedicated Chrome window, already organized.
  • Faster Navigation — Named, color-coded tab groups make it easy to find what you need, when you need it.
  • Saved, Local Library — Store multiple PageSets and relaunch any of them anytime. Your data, on Your device. No Cloud!
  • Free + Pro options — Free covers everyday use; Pro adds power-user features if, and when, you need more.

2. Installation

Install from the Chrome Web Store

  1. Open Chrome and visit the PageSets listing on the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Click Add to Chrome.
  3. When prompted, click Add extension to confirm.
  4. PageSets is now installed. You'll see the puzzle-piece icon in your Chrome toolbar.

Pin PageSets to the Toolbar (Recommended)

  1. Click the puzzle-piece icon (Extensions) in the top-right of Chrome.
  2. Find PageSets in the list.
  3. Click the pin icon to keep PageSets visible in your toolbar.

First Launch

Click the PageSets icon in your toolbar. The first time you open it, your library will be empty—next you'll import or create your first PageSet.

  • ProTip: Right Click anywhere in a Chrome window, choose "Start PageSets"

3. Supported File Formats

PageSets supports two file formats. Both work well—choose the one that fits your specific workflow.

Feature Plain Text (.txt) JSON (.json)
Free tier Read ✅ Read ✅ · Save ✅
Pro tier Read ✅ · Save ✅ Read ✅ · Save ✅
Easy to edit by hand Very easy Moderate
Supports all PageSets directives ✅ ✅
Best for Most users Developers / automation

Recommendation: Use Plain Text (.txt) unless you specifically need JSON. It's the easiest to read and edit in any text editor.

Plain Text Format (.txt)

A PageSet plain-text file is a list of URLs—one per line. Optional directives at the top (lines starting with "@") configure the PageSet name, tab-group color, and launch behavior.

@name Morning Workflow
@color blue
@title Morning Workflow

https://mail.google.com | Gmail
https://calendar.google.com | Calendar
https://notion.so | Notion
https://github.com | GitHub

Rules:

  • Lines starting with "#" are comments — ignored by PageSets
  • Blank lines are ignored
  • The URL and optional display label are separated by | (space-pipe-space).
  • Directives must appear before the first URL

Directives Reference

Use directives at the top of a PageSet file to control how it launches. Directives must appear before the first URL.

Directive Example What it does Tier
@name @name AI Research Sets the tab group name. If omitted, PageSets uses the filename. Free + Pro
@color @color purple Sets the tab-group color. Free + Pro
@title @title *** AI Research *** Sets the Chrome/Edge window title (macOS & Windows). Pro
@collapse @collapse Launches the group collapsed. Pro

Valid colors: grey · blue · red · yellow · green · pink · purple · cyan

Pro Tip: Inline comments after directives are supported:

# Last Update 3/1/2025
#
@color purple # change this seasonally

JSON Format (.json)

{
  "company": "LumiCore Software",
  "product": "PageSets",
  "version": "1.0",
  "dashboard": {
    "name": "Morning Workflow",
    "windowTitle": "*** Morning Workflow ***",
    "color": "blue",
    "collapsed": false
  },
  "sites": [
    { "url": "https://mail.google.com", "title": "Gmail", "pinned": false, "active": true },
    { "url": "https://calendar.google.com", "title": "Calendar", "pinned": false, "active": false }
  ]
}

Note: windowTitle, and collapsed are Pro version only fields. They are accepted in Free version files but ignored at launch.

4. Launching PageSets

Import a File

  1. Open the PageSets popup.
  2. Click the file drop area (or drag and drop a .txt / .json file onto it).
  3. PageSets parses the file and creates a library card showing the PageSet name and tab count.
  4. Click Launch or double-click the card to open it.

After importing, the PageSet is automatically added to your Recents library.

Launch from Your Library (Recents PageSet List)

Double-Click any Card/Tile (this is the primary launch action). Your PageSet opens in a new, dedicated Chrome window with tabs grouped and named.

Other Ways to Launch

Method How Notes
Launch Button Import a file → click Launch Best for first-time imports
Double-Click Card/Tile Double-click anywhere on a library card Primary repeat-launch method
Right-Click Menu Right-click a page → Start PageSets Opens the popup; launch from there
Keyboard Shortcut Cmd+Shift+L (Mac) · Ctrl+Shift+L (Windows) Opens the popup
Quick Launch Cmd+Shift+1 / 2 / 3 Launches the 1st/2nd/3rd most recent PageSet (Pro)
Quick Search In the PageSets window, press Cmd+K and type a name Fuzzy search + launch (Pro)

Note: See 'Keyboard Shortcuts' above for Mac/Windows usage (CMD vs CTRL)

5. Reload from File

The Reload icon (↺) on each library card re-reads your source file and updates the saved PageSet. It does not launch the PageSet—after reloading, double-click the card to launch.

Use this when: You've edited the .txt or .json file and want PageSets to pick up the changes.

How it works

Situation What happens
First time you click Reload A file picker opens—select the source file. PageSets saves permission for future reloads.
Same browser session Reload happens silently (no picker, no prompts).
After a Chrome restart Chrome may show "Allow PageSets to read this file?" Approve once, then reloads are silent again.
File moved or deleted An error appears because the source file can't be found.
Permission denied PageSets keeps the last, most current version (nothing launches).

Visual feedback after reload (v2.1.100)

After a successful reload the card's meta line (tab count + last-used date) turns green and displays the updated tab count and "just now". The green indicator stays until the next time you open the popup, giving you a clear visual confirmation that the data is fresh.

A brief success message also appears in the popup status bar: ✓ Refreshed · N tabs · double-click to launch

Typical flow after editing a file

  1. Edit your PageSets compatible .txt or .json file in any text editor and save.
  2. Open PageSets → click ↺ on the PageSet card.
  3. Confirm the card meta line turns green and shows the updated tab count.
  4. Double-click the card to launch using the updated content.

6. Saving PageSets

Save the Current Window

Capture all open tabs in your current Chrome window and save them as a new PageSet file.

  1. Open PageSets and click Save Window.
  2. Enter a name for the PageSet.
  3. Choose a format:
    • JSON (Free)
    • TXT (Pro, default)
  4. Click Download — the file saves to your Downloads folder (or your browser's configured download location).
  5. The PageSet is also added to your Recents library automatically.

File Format Options by Version

Feature Free Pro
Save as JSON (.json) ✅ ✅
Save as Plain Text (.txt) ❌ ✅ (default)
Save with directives (@color, @title, @collapse) ❌ ✅

Pro Tip: When you save as .txt in the Pro version, PageSets automatically includes useful directives like @name, @color, and @title based on your current tab group. Your file is ready to edit and relaunch.

7. Managing Your Library

Your library shows your 3 most recent PageSets. (Up to 50 in Pro)

Pro Tip: Using PageSets Pro, you can add up to 50 page sets.

Card actions

Control Action
Double-Click Card Launch the PageSet
✏ Edit Open the Edit PageSet modal to rename, recolor, or change launch settings (v2.1.100)
↺ Reload Re-read the source file and update the saved PageSet
🗑 Trash Remove from your library (does not delete the source file)
✕ Close Close the PageSet's active window (Pro)
★ Star Mark as a favorite — pins it to the top (Pro)

Favorites (Pro)

Starred PageSets stay at the top of your library and rank higher in Quick "Cmd+K" search results. Favorites persist across Chrome restarts.

Clear all recents

"Clear Recents" will remove all cards from your library. Your files are not changed. You can re-import them anytime.

8. Edit PageSet (v2.1.100)

The Edit PageSet modal lets you rename a PageSet or change its launch settings directly from the popup — no file editing required.

How to open the editor

  • Hover over a card and click the pencil (✏) icon that appears in the card's action row, or
  • Right-click a card and choose Edit.

Editable fields

Field Free Pro Notes
Name ✅ ✅ Renames the PageSet in your library and updates the tab group name at next launch
Tab Group Color ❌ ✅ Choose from all 8 Chrome tab group colors
Collapse at Launch ❌ ✅ Set to Enabled to launch the group collapsed; Disabled to launch expanded
Chrome Window Title ❌ ✅ Sets the @title equivalent — applied via the companion app (PageSets.app on macOS, PageSetsSetup.exe on Windows)

Note: On the Free tier, Tab Group Color, Collapse at Launch, and Chrome Window Title are visible but disabled. They display the PRO badge. Upgrading to Pro unlocks them without re-importing your files.

What editing does and does not change

Saving the editor updates the stored card data in your PageSets library. It does not modify your original .txt or .json source file on disk. If you later reload the card from file (using ↺), the source file values will overwrite the edits you made in the modal.

Pro Tip: Think of the editor as a "quick override" for how the PageSet launches. For permanent changes, update your source file and reload.

Activating Pro

  1. Open PageSets, Click ✨ Upgrade to PageSets Pro (or visit pagesets.co/upgrade).
  2. Complete your purchase. You'll receive a license key via the email you provided at time of purchase.
  3. Open PageSets, Click Settings, look for License, Enter your License Key, then Click Activate.
  4. On successful upgrade activation, you should see the FREE badge at the top of PageSets change to PRO.

10. Platform Setup

macOS

No additional setup is required for core PageSets features.

Chrome Window Naming (Pro)

Mac users can utilize the @title directive to set the Chrome Window Title using the PageSets Pro macOS application (PageSets.app).

  • To Enable Window Naming
  1. Download PageSets.app from pagesets.co/upgrade.
  2. Move PageSets.app to your Applications folder.
  3. From your Applications folder, Launch PageSets.app. If macOS requests it, open System Settings | Privacy & Security and Click Open Anyway. It's possible you may need to confirm this again.
  4. Window Titles will now be applied automatically when you launch PageSets that include the @title directive in their configuration file.

Without PageSets.app, Everything else will continue to work normally. PageSets will still apply the Tab Group Names and Color. Chrome Window Titles just won't change.

Windows Setup Guide

The PageSets extension works fully on Windows Chrome and Edge. As of v2.1.100, Chrome Window Naming is now available on Windows too — no longer macOS-only.

What works on Windows:

  • All import, launch, save, and reload functionality ✅
  • Tab group naming and color ✅
  • Chrome/Edge Window Naming (@title) ✅
  • Right-click context menu ✅
  • All keyboard shortcuts ✅

Chrome/Edge Window Naming (Pro)

Windows users can utilize the @title directive to set the Chrome or Edge window title using the PageSets Pro Windows companion app.

  • To Enable Window Naming
  1. Download the Windows installer (PageSetsSetup.exe) from pagesets.co/upgrade.
  2. Run PageSetsSetup.exe and follow the prompts. It's signed, so no admin rights or SmartScreen bypass are needed.
  3. Window Titles will now be applied automatically in Chrome or Edge when you launch a PageSet that includes the @title directive in its configuration file.

Without the Windows companion app, everything else will continue to work normally. PageSets will still apply the Tab Group Names and Color. Window Titles just won't change.

If window naming stops working (for example after antivirus software or a system cleanup tool clears the registration), download the PageSets Repair Tool and double-click it. No admin rights or command line needed — see the FAQ for details.

Note: Linux and ChromeOS are not yet supported for window naming — planned for a future release. Every other PageSets feature works identically on Linux.

Installation on Windows:

  1. Open Chrome on Windows
  2. Visit the PageSets Chrome Web Store listing (link)
  3. Click Add to Chrome → Add extension
  4. Pin PageSets to your toolbar via the Extensions menu (puzzle-piece icon)
  5. Use Ctrl+Shift+L to open PageSets via keyboard shortcut

Extension installation itself requires no additional setup on Windows. See Chrome/Edge Window Naming above for the separate companion app needed for that specific Pro feature.

11. Troubleshooting

Pro activation issues

License key not accepted

  • Make sure there are no extra spaces before or after the key when pasting.
  • Keys are case-sensitive — paste from your confirmation email instead of retyping.
  • Confirm you're online — activation requires a one-time server check.

"Already activated" on a new device

  • Pro licenses can be activated on multiple personal devices.
  • If you reach the activation limit, contact support@pagesets.co and include your order number.

Activation worked, but the badge still shows FREE

  1. Close and reopen the PageSets popup.
  2. If it still shows FREE, go to Settings / License / Revalidate.
  3. If the issue persists, remove and reinstall the extension. Your library is stored separately and should not be lost.

Purchased, but never received a key

  • Check your spam/junk folder for the confirmation email from our License Provider (Stripe/LemonSqueezy/PayPal).
  • Contact support@pagesets.co and include your purchase receipt and your order number.

"Start PageSets" right-click menu item is missing

The Start PageSets right-click menu item is registered when the extension is first installed. If it's missing:

  1. Open chrome://extensions in a new browser tab.
  2. Find PageSets, click Remove.
  3. Reinstall PageSets from the Chrome Web Store.
  4. The context menu item should appear after the fresh install.

IMPORTANT: Clicking 'Reload' on the extensions page does not re-register Chrome Menu Support. You need to remove and reinstall. This is required.

Known Limitations

Chrome Auto-saved Tab Groups (Duplicate Pills in Bookmarks Bar)

When you close a PageSet window by clicking the red X on the Chrome window, Chrome may automatically save the tab group and display it as a colored pill in your bookmarks bar. Repeated close-and-relaunch cycles can accumulate multiple pills with the same name.

This is a Chrome browser behavior — the extension cannot prevent Chrome from saving tab groups when the user manually closes the window. The extension does prevent this when it closes the window on your behalf (e.g., using the ✕ Close button on a card).

Workaround: Use the ✕ Close button on the PageSet card to close a PageSet window. This lets the extension close the window cleanly without Chrome auto-saving the group. Existing duplicate pills can be removed manually by right-clicking each pill in the bookmarks bar and selecting Delete.

PageSets Known Issues

Minimum Chrome Version

PageSets requires Chrome 122 or later. Older versions don't support the Session Storage API that PageSets relies on for certain Pro features (such as Close and De-dupe).

To update Chrome, go to Chrome menu → Help → About Google Chrome.

13. FAQ

Can I use PageSets on more than one computer?

Yes. Install PageSets Pro on each computer and activate Pro using the same license key. Your source files live wherever you store them—use iCloud, Dropbox, Google Drive, or any sync service to keep them consistent across machines.

Note: Your Recents library is stored locally per Chrome profile, so it won't automatically sync between computers.

Does PageSets store or transmit my browsing data?

No. PageSets stores your PageSet configurations locally in Chrome's extension storage. Your URLs and tab data do not leave your device.

The only external request is a one-time license validation during Pro activation.

What happens to my library if I uninstall PageSets?

Your Recents library is stored in Chrome's local extension storage, so it is cleared when you uninstall the extension.

Your .txt and .json source files on disk are unaffected—reinstall PageSets and re-import your files.

Can I rename a PageSet?

Yes — two ways:

In the popup (v2.1.100): Hover over the card and click the ✏ pencil icon (or right-click the card). The Edit PageSet modal opens. Update the Name field and click Save. No file editing required.

In your source file: Edit the @name directive (.txt) or dashboard.name field (.json), then click ↺ Reload on the card to update it.

Note: If you edit the source file after using the in-popup editor, clicking Reload will overwrite your in-popup changes with the file values.

Can I change a PageSet's tab group color without editing the file?

Yes (Pro). Open the Edit PageSet modal and select a new color from the color picker. The change takes effect at next launch.

Why does my tab group show as gray and unnamed?

You may be using Chrome 145. This was a known Chrome bug resolved in Chrome 146. Update Chrome via Help → About Google Chrome.

Can I have multiple PageSets open at the same time?

Yes. Each PageSet launches in its own dedicated Chrome window.

Pro users can close individual PageSets by clicking ✕ on a card, or use Close All to close ALL active PageSet windows.

The popup won't open from the keyboard shortcut

Chrome can disable extension shortcuts if there's a conflict. Go to chrome://extensions/shortcuts, find PageSets, and verify or reassign the shortcut.

14. Release Notes

v2.1.100 — August 2026 (shipped)

  • New Feature: Chrome/Edge Window Naming now works on Windows — previously macOS-only. Backed by a signed Windows installer (PageSetsSetup.exe) with no UAC prompt.
  • New Feature: PageSets Repair Tool for Windows — a double-click, no-admin-required tool that restores window naming if the registration ever gets cleared (e.g. by antivirus or a system cleanup tool).
  • Pro downloads now include both macOS and Windows in one package.

v2.0.0 Pre-release — 2026

  • New Feature: Edit PageSet modal — Hover a card and click the pencil icon (or right-click) to open the Edit PageSet modal. Rename the PageSet, pick a tab group color, set collapse behavior, and update the Chrome window title — all without touching your source file. Color, collapse, and window title fields are Pro-only; Name editing is available on all tiers.
  • Improvement: Pro feature visibility — Pro-only settings in the Options page are now visible on the Free tier (previously hidden). They appear grayed out with a PRO badge, so Free users can see what's available before upgrading.
  • Improvement: Reload visual feedback — After clicking the reload/refresh icon, the card's meta line (tab count + timestamp) turns green and displays the updated tab count and "just now". The indicator stays green until the next popup open. A status bar message is also shown for 5 seconds.
  • Bug fix: Tab count not updating on reload — When reloading a PageSet from file, the card's tab count now correctly reflects the new file contents immediately.
  • Improvement: Deduplication on extension-close — When the extension closes a PageSet window (via the ✕ Close button), tabs are now ungrouped before the window closes. This prevents Chrome from auto-saving the tab group to the bookmarks bar as a saved group pill.

v1.2.0 — March 2026

  • New Feature: Right-click context menu: Right-click any page and select Start PageSets to open the popup instantly.
  • New Feature (User Request): Reload from file: The ↺ Reload icon on each library card re-reads your source .txt or .json file and updates the saved PageSet—no re-import needed after editing.
  • New Feature (User Request): Double-click is the primary launch action: Double-click any card to launch. This is now the default, recommended way to open PageSets from your library.
  • Chrome Bug: (Workaround) Chrome 146 confirmed: Tab group name and color render correctly on Chrome 146, and the Chrome 145 workaround code has been removed.
  • Fixed: @color directives with inline comments now parse correctly.
