Stickwalker peer-play fix
This update fixes peer play reporting "cannot connect again" before the walkers have met. Stickwalker now provisions a persistent device ID and repairs missing IDs on existing installations when they boot.
Use the app-only update instructions to keep your Pokémon, registration, steps, Watts, items and settings. The partition layout matches the September 30 release. Update both devices if both are running older Stickwalker firmware.
The installation guide now includes the BPV10NF receiver wiring: anode to GND, cathode to G5. The README, player and developer guides, and code comments have also been rewritten.
Download the firmware ZIP for your M5Stack Stick S3. It includes the installation and controls guides. The source and runtime archives are for building or modifying the firmware; SHA256SUMS covers the downloads.
Testing
- Linux and macOS host checks passed, including peer encounters, day rollover, reboot, save migration and interrupted checkpoint recovery.
- Repair preserved every byte outside identity fields and checksums in three retained device saves.
- The infrared sampler matches the reference machine code. The unpacked runtime kit reproduces the release ELF byte for byte.
This is a prerelease pending physical-device tests of the updated firmware. qualification.json contains the build hashes and test record.
Stickwalker first firmware prerelease
Stickwalker turns the M5Stack Stick S3 into a recreation of the Pokéwalker. It runs my reconstructed Pokéwalker game code: take a Pokémon for walks, earn Watts, catch Pokémon, find items and transfer your Pokémon and finds back to HeartGold or SoulSilver over infrared.
Install
Download stickwalker-0e767b3816c5-firmware.zip, unpack it and follow INSTALL.md. It covers backing up the Stick, first installation and preserving your game data during an app-only update. PLAYING.md walks through connecting to your game and taking your first Pokémon out; CONTROLS.md explains the button layouts and settings.
The default controls are M for Left, R for Right and M+R together for Center. L opens Stick Settings. Hold M for half a second to wake the display.
This version
- The original step-counting algorithm receives scaled readings from the Stick's Bosch BMI270 at the reconstructed firmware's cadence.
- The original screen is displayed at 2× scale, with light/dark appearance and adjustable rotation.
- The speaker plays the reconstructed tone sequences with their original pitches and note durations.
- Game registration, Pokémon, route and progress are stored on the Stick. App-only updates preserve that storage.
- Built-in pictures and the font use placeholder artwork. Pokémon and route artwork arrive from the game during transfer; the source supports personal builds with your own extracted built-in artwork.
Test record
The production build, host regressions and Linux/macOS CI pass. The three timing-sensitive optical sampler functions match the frozen production reference. The supplied runtime kit reproduces this release's ELF byte for byte.
This is an early-testing prerelease. Earlier firmware completed a real HeartGold connection; the exact image here awaits the physical checks in release qualification. Repeated optical trials have also recorded occasional timeouts, retained in the device results. qualification.json identifies the tests and firmware hashes for this release.
For developers
The source archive contains commit 0e767b3816c5. The runtime archive contains dependency sources, original notices, application/library objects and the verified relinking recipe. Players only need the firmware ZIP. SHA256SUMS covers all three archives and the qualification record.
Stickwalker is released under MIT. Dependencies and explicitly marked assets retain their own licenses.
