ServerBox 1.0
The first release of ServerBox: turn a used Android phone into a Linux server, no root required.
Highlights
- Linux distributions without root. Alpine, Arch, Debian, Kali and Ubuntu run as headless server images through PRoot, or in a real VM through the companion app on phones with the Android Virtualization Framework.
- SSH out of the box. Every session runs an SSH server on port 2022; the Sessions tab shows the command, user and password. Turn on Settings → Allow SSH from the network to connect from other devices, with optional key-only login.
- Stays up. Servers keep running with the screen off and after the app is closed, restart if they die, and can start again after a reboot.
- Your services start with it. Executables in
/etc/serverbox/autostart.drun each time the server starts. - Phone storage is available at
/sdcardinside the distribution. - Faster registry mirrors for users in China, and a terminal-style log of filesystem setup.
Upgrading from a pre-release build
- ServerBox is now SSH-only: VNC and the graphical desktop images are gone. Sessions saved as VNC open over SSH, and desktop-only apps are removed from the Apps list.
- The old default user
userlandis renamed toserverbox, keeping its home directory, files, SSH keys and password. - This release is signed with the release key below. Builds from before 1.0 were debug-signed, so Android can't update them in place: uninstall the old build first. Uninstalling deletes its filesystems and sessions.
