What happened

It seems like NegPy can't open NEF files.

It does successfully load a thumbnail.

I would suspect that this has to do with the compression level of the RAW, when I have a moment I will try the 3 compression levels (0, lossless, and lossy) that NEF format offers and report back

Can you provide an example NEF file? I use NEF every day and it works fine, but I'm using a much older camera (not sure I have even looked at compression settings on that camera).

(The same file does work in Lightroom, so it definitely a valid RAW generally speaking)

Ok, yeah, confirmed this is a compression issue. This compression algorithm is not supported by Libraw. Some discussion here: LibRaw/LibRaw#642 (from 2024, so I assume there is some barrier to them doing it. Patents maybe? I didn't dig into that...).

I will look into adding better error messaging for this case. Not sure if there's a practical path to actually solving it without Libraw support, but I will leave that to @marcinz606.

The easiest solution right now is probably to change the compression setting to something Libraw supports.

It's supposed to be coming in libraw by the end of the year from what I've read
