Orbit v1.4.3 — Release Notes

A look-and-feel pass. The chrome gets closer to a real IDE, the text reads
cleaner, and — finally — the Windows installer looks like it belongs to Orbit.

What's new

🧰 A cleaner, IntelliJ-style top toolbar

The project toolbar was rebuilt to sit closer to IntelliJ's: a branded project
chip, a clickable VCS widget (branch, clean-or-changed, ahead/behind — it
opens Source Control), a green Run entry, and dense icon actions separated by
dividers.

🎨 Retuned text colours

The dark-theme text hierarchy is cleaned up — brighter, more neutral
primary/muted/subtle tones — so everything reads a touch crisper.

📦 A properly branded Windows installer

The Windows setup no longer looks like 2003. It now carries the Orbit logo
(installer icon + a branded header and welcome/finish sidebar on a dark panel)
and offers a per-user / per-machine choice. The installer artwork is
generated from the brand SVG at build time, so it always matches.

🧩 Integrations in Plugins

The Plugins view gained an Integrations section — the AI provider is the
first entry, showing its live connection status and linking straight to its
settings.

The interactive VS Code-style status bar, the icon-only activity bar, the Plugins
view, the correct red app icon, and the code-signing pipeline (which signs macOS

Orbit v1.4.2 — Release Notes

An IDE-chrome polish pass. Small, tasteful refinements that make Orbit feel
tighter and more native — building on the v1.4.1 redesign.

What's new

📊 A richer status bar

The bottom status bar is now a proper VS Code-style bar:

• The git branch and AI chips are clickable and open their tool windows.
• It shows the current indent width alongside the caret position, encoding,
  line ending and language.
• Every segment has a hover state, so it reads as interactive, not decorative.

⌨️ Keyboard focus rings & hover feedback

Interactive controls now show a clean focus ring for keyboard users, and the
activity bar and bottom tool-window strip gained consistent hover feedback —
the small touches that make an app feel finished.

Orbit v1.4.1

Orbit v1.4.1 — Release Notes

A proper-IDE design pass. Orbit's chrome moves closer to VS Code / IntelliJ,
the installers finally carry the right logo, and the release pipeline is ready to
ship warning-free, signed builds.

Highlights

🎛 A slim, icon-only activity bar

The left navigation is now a VS Code-style activity bar — icons only, a
fraction of its old width, with tooltips and an accent rail on the active item.
More room for your code, less chrome.

🧭 Context in the title bar, not branding

The title bar drops the marketing banner and shows what you're looking at —
the current project or view — the way a real IDE does. The old "Command Center"
header and spinning logo are gone; you know what app you're in.

🧩 Plugins

A new Plugins destination presents Orbit's built-in capabilities as
extensions and previews the community marketplace that's on the roadmap (marked
honestly as coming, not pretend-installed).

🎨 The right icon

The installers and the app now carry the current red Orbit logo — CI
regenerates the full icon set (.ico / .icns / PNGs) from the brand SVG at
build time, so no more stale purple raster.

🔏 Signed, warning-free installs (when certs are provided)

The release workflow now signs and notarizes macOS and signs Windows
automatically — which removes the "unidentified developer" / SmartScreen prompts
— as soon as signing certificates are added as repository secrets. See
docs/SIGNING.md
for exactly what to add.

Note: OS-level code signing requires paid certificates that only the
project owner can obtain (an Apple Developer ID for macOS; an OV/EV
code-signing certificate for Windows). Until those are added, these builds ship
unsigned and your OS will still warn on first launch — that's a property of
any unsigned binary, not of Orbit. The pipeline is wired to sign automatically
the moment the certificates exist.

The local-first AI assistant, the commit graph, Terminal 3.0 (search / splits /
profiles), split editors, and the full IDE beneath them.

Orbit v1.4.0 — Release Notes

Toward an AI-native IDE. Orbit gains a local-first AI assistant, a commit
graph, a much stronger terminal, and split editors — while staying exactly what
it's always been: local-first, no account, no telemetry, fast, and
cross-platform.

Highlights

🤖 A local-first AI assistant

A new AI tool window brings a project-aware chat right into the workspace,
backed by any OpenAI-compatible endpoint you choose in Settings → AI:

• A local runtime (Ollama, LM Studio, a llama.cpp server) or a hosted
  provider — one code path serves both.
• Off by default. The endpoint, model and key are stored only on your
  device, and Orbit contacts nothing until you enable it and send a message.
• Built on a new, unit-tested orbit_core::ai module.

🌱 Commit graph

The Source Control history now draws a real commit-graph rail — a lane per
branch with a node in each commit's lane — so you can read branch and merge
structure at a glance. The lane layout is a pure, unit-tested function.

🖥 Terminal 3.0

The integrated terminal grows real IDE ergonomics:

• In-terminal find (Ctrl/Cmd+F, next/previous).
• A side-by-side split — watch a build in one pane, work in another.
• Shell profiles — the ＋ has a menu of the shells Orbit found, and each
  tab is labelled with the shell it launched.

⬌ Split editors

The editor splits side by side — open a second file next to the first, or
the same file twice. Both panes share one document model, so a file open in both
edits a single draft with one unsaved state.

🧹 Ecosystem plumbing removed

The last of the Blink/Killer/Flux/Beacon sibling-detection is gone from the app
and the website — Orbit no longer carries integrations that never had a real
engine behind them.

Under the hood

New unit-tested engine work (orbit_core::ai, the git commit-graph lane
layout), the xterm search addon for terminal find, and a small editor-store
change that gives split editors a shared document model for free. The engine
test suite stays green and the desktop bundle builds on macOS (Intel + Apple
Silicon), Windows and Linux.

Orbit v1.3.1

Orbit v1.3.1 — Release Notes

Finishing touches on the IntelliJ-style tool-window system. A small,
UI-only follow-up to v1.3.0 that gives the workspace the layout affordances a
real IDE has.

Still everything you'd expect: local-first, no account, no telemetry, fast, and
cross-platform.

What's new

↕ Resizable tool windows

The bottom tool-window dock (Problems, Git, Search, Testing, Terminal, …) can now
be resized by dragging its top edge. The height is clamped to a usable range
and remembered across restarts.

◧ Collapsible file tree

The editor's left Explorer now collapses to a thin rail and expands again, so
you can hand the full width to your code when you want it.

🧠 A layout that remembers

The docked tool window, the dock height and the file-tree state now persist:
the docked tool and tree survive switching between projects, and the sizes and
visibility survive relaunching — instead of resetting every time you open a
project.

Under the hood

A pure UI/layout release — no engine changes. A new, unit-tested workspace-layout
store drives the above; the 100+ orbit_core tests stay green and the desktop
bundle builds on macOS (Intel + Apple Silicon), Windows and Linux.

The IntelliJ-style workspace — a permanent editor centre with a docked bottom
tool-window strip, a live status bar, and flat professional chrome — plus the

Orbit v1.3.0 — Release Notes

The IntelliJ-style workspace overhaul. Orbit's IDE grows a real
tool-window layout — a permanent editor centre with a docked bottom tool-window
strip, a live status bar, and flatter, more professional chrome. The old
Ecosystem previews are gone; the Dashboard is now a focused Projects launcher.

Still everything you'd expect: local-first, no account, no telemetry, fast, and
cross-platform.

A project now opens like IntelliJ IDEA:

• A top toolbar with the project, its language, and a live git readout
  (branch, clean/changed, ahead/behind).
• The editor is the permanent centre — file tree, tabs, breadcrumbs and the
  CodeMirror editor fill the full height of the window.
• A collapsible bottom tool-window strip docks one tool at a time below the
  editor: Problems · Git · Search · Testing · Terminal · Overview · Commands ·
  Health · Dependencies. Click a tool to dock it, click again to collapse —
  exactly like IntelliJ's tool windows. The old in-project tab bar is gone.

📊 A live status bar

A slim status bar runs across the bottom of the window: the current git branch,
the active editor's caret position (Ln, Col), and the file's language /
encoding / line ending — always visible, IDE-style.

🎨 Flatter, more professional chrome

The marketing gradient washes are gone. Panels are solid, the title bar and the
tool sidebar are denser, tabs use a clean underline, and a project fills the full
width of the window like a real IDE.

🧹 Focused navigation

• The Ecosystem previews (Blink/Killer/Flux/Beacon) — which were never
  backed by real engines — have been removed entirely.
• The old Dashboard is now a lean Projects launcher; its coding stats moved
  into Analytics, and live per-project context lives in the new status bar.
• The command palette and sidebar navigate the real tools — Containers,
  Database, APIs, Analytics, Settings.

Multi-file editing, workspace search, quick-open, the full git power center
(stage/diff/commit/history/branches/stash/tags), Containers · Database · APIs,
the Testing panel, live language-server diagnostics in Problems, the red identity

• launch splashscreen, the High-Contrast theme, and signed auto-update with an
  on-demand "Check for updates" in Settings.

Orbit v1.2.0 — Release Notes

The IDE release. Orbit grows from a developer command center into a genuine,
local-first IDE — multi-file editing, universal search, a full git power center,
Docker/database/API tooling, a testing panel, and live language-server
diagnostics — wrapped in a new red identity with a launch splashscreen.

Still everything you'd expect: local-first, no account, no telemetry, fast, and
cross-platform.

Highlights

✍️ A real code editor

• Multi-file tabs — every file you open gets its own tab with its own
  unsaved draft; reopening focuses the existing tab, closing picks a neighbour.
• Find, replace & go-to-line in-editor (Ctrl/Cmd+F · Ctrl/Cmd+H ·
  Ctrl+Alt+G), a live Ln, Col readout, and editor preferences (font
  size, tab size, word wrap) that apply live and persist.
• Document outline — jump around a file by symbol.
• File operations in the Explorer — create, rename and delete, with guards.

🔎 Search everywhere

• Workspace search — fast find-in-files, click a result to open at the line.
• Quick-open — ⌘/Ctrl+K and type to fuzzy-find any file in the project.

🌱 Git, as a first-class panel

A complete Source Control tab: staged/unstaged groups with one-click
stage/unstage, an inline coloured diff, commit, history with per-commit
patches, branches (switch/create), fetch / pull / push, stash, and
tags — all on the git binary you already have.

🐳 Containers · 🗄 Database · 🌐 APIs

• Containers — list Docker containers and images, start/stop/restart.
• Database — open a SQLite file and browse tables, view rows, run SELECTs.
• APIs — a REST client: method, URL, headers, body, and a JSON-aware
  response viewer.

🧪 Testing & Problems

• Testing — run a project's test command with a parsed pass/fail summary
  (cargo, Jest/Vitest, pytest).
• Problems — a unified, navigable diagnostics view that now includes live
  language-server diagnostics for your open files (rust-analyzer,
  typescript-language-server, pylsp, gopls) when a server is installed.

🎨 New identity + launch experience

• A red visual identity matched to the website, a redesigned glowing logo,
  and a black-and-red launch splashscreen.
• A fourth theme: High Contrast for low-vision use.

⬆️ Updates

Orbit checks for signed updates on launch, and Settings now has an on-demand
"Check for updates" that downloads, installs and relaunches.

Under the hood

Multiple new, unit-tested engine modules — search, docker, db, http,
testing, outline, and an lsp client (framing + JSON-RPC + a Session
state machine + a driver that spawns real servers). 100+ engine tests stay
green, and the desktop bundle builds on macOS (Intel + Apple Silicon), Windows
and Linux.

Still to come

Split editors, the LSP go-to-definition/hover gestures, a debugger, and a plugin
SDK — tracked honestly in the roadmap.

The terminal release. Orbit gains a real embedded shell, signed automatic
updates, and a theme that follows your OS — plus a pile of correctness fixes.

Still everything you'd expect: local-first, no account, no telemetry.

Highlights

🖥 Integrated terminal

Every project now has a real shell built in, running on a pseudo-terminal
(ConPTY on Windows, openpty on macOS/Linux) — not a piped subprocess. Because
programs see a TTY, the things that break in most embedded consoles just work:

• Colours, prompts, spinners and progress bars
• Full-screen programs — top, vim, lazygit
• Ctrl-C, history, tab completion, reflow on resize

It opens in the project directory, in the shell you actually use — Orbit detects
pwsh/PowerShell/cmd on Windows and zsh/fish/bash on macOS/Linux, respecting
$SHELL/COMSPEC. bash/zsh start as login shells so your profile loads.

Tabs, split panes, output search and sessions that survive a restart are on
the roadmap.

🔄 Signed automatic updates

Orbit checks GitHub Releases on launch and offers to install a newer version in
place. Updates are signed and verified against a public key compiled into
the app, so a tampered or spoofed release can't install itself. Nothing
downloads or installs without you clicking. See
docs/updates.md.

🎨 System theme

Appearance now offers Dark / Light / System. "System" follows your OS and
updates live when it flips. Your choice is also finally remembered across
restarts — previously it silently reset to dark every launch.

🗂 Workspaces & environments, wired up

The workspace model (per-project tasks, notes, bookmarks) and the .env manager
(discovery, secret masking, duplicate/missing-variable detection) are now
reachable from the app, not just the engine.

Fixes

• Desktop bundles wouldn't compile because an IPC type wasn't Serialize; a
  guard test now catches that class of bug in cargo test.
• Fixed the frontend path in the Tauri before-commands that failed every build.
• Fixed the updater signing key (it was password-protected; CI had no TTY for
  the prompt).
• Light mode's status colours were tuned for a dark surface and washed out; they
  are re-tuned.

Upgrading

If you're on v1.0.0, install v1.1.0 over it — your local data (projects,
workspaces, settings) is preserved; the database migrates automatically. From
v1.1.0 onward, in-app updates take over.

🔒 Safety & privacy

• No network on hot paths. Analytics stay local.
• A dangerous-command guard flags destructive commands (rm -rf, dd,
  mkfs, fork bombs, curl | sh, …) and requires explicit confirmation before
  running them.
• Restrictive Content-Security-Policy and a minimal Tauri capability set.
  orbit-core forbids unsafe code.

⌨️ CLI companion

The same engine as a terminal binary: orbit scan | info | health | deps | git | commands | run | init, all with --json.

🔄 Auto-update

The desktop app can check for, download and install updates from GitHub
