Release list
SubieScope 0.4.0
What's new
- Extended values for newer Subarus (experimental). In OBD-II mode you can now ask the car for manufacturer specific values such as AVCS (VVT) angles, knock and boost control, using OBD-II Mode 22. Turn it on in Settings, connect, and SubieScope checks which of about 130 known values your car answers and offers those in the Logger. Most cars answer none of them (a 2008 WRX STI answered nothing), so this is mainly for Subarus from about 2015. The values come from community data, so please check them against what you expect. Tested with a simulated car only: reports from real cars are very welcome.
- Pressure in bar. Boost, manifold and fuel pressures can now be shown in kPa, bar or psi. Pick one in Settings > Pressure and it applies everywhere.
- Nine more standard values. The car reports more than the app offered. Added: fuel system status (open or closed loop), the second throttle and pedal sensors, relative pedal position, and the counters for warm-ups, time and distance since codes were cleared and with the check engine light on. Each was checked against a real car.
- Command line remote control (for developers).
subiescope-cli remotesends read-only requests to the adapter the running app is connected to, so things can be tried against a real car without rebuilding the app. It is off by default, only your own user can reach it, and nothing that clears codes or writes to the car is allowed. - Fixed: a connected Bluetooth adapter showed as "not in range", because adapters stop advertising while connected. Its name is now remembered.
Install: download SubieScope.dmg below, open it and drag SubieScope to Applications (replace the old version if you have one). You need macOS 14 or newer, and either a VAG KKL cable with an FTDI chip or a Bluetooth 4.0 (BLE) ELM327 adapter.
I develop SubieScope for free. If it is useful to you, you can buy me a coffee.

SubieScope 0.3.0
What's new
- OBD-II mode for newer cars (new). SubieScope can now read cars the KKL cable can't, such as the 2015 and newer WRX and STI (VA), Levorg, XV / Crosstrek, Forester (SJ and newer), BRZ and GR86, and cars from other brands, with a Bluetooth OBD-II adapter such as the Vgate iCar Pro BLE 4.0. You get live gauges, logging to CSV, trouble codes with explanations (confirmed and pending), clearing codes, the VIN, and a boost gauge. Subaru-only values such as knock and IAM still need the cable and Subaru SSM mode. This mode has been tested with a simulated car and adapter: please tell me how it works on yours.
- Setup wizard. The first time you open SubieScope, a short wizard asks what car you have, recommends the right connection, walks you through connecting and testing it, and can start a demo car if you have no hardware yet. It is also in the Car menu.
- Switch connection type in the sidebar. The connection card now has an SSM cable / OBD-II switch and a device picker, plus a "Which one do I need?" guide with the supported cars for each. Each type remembers its own gauges. The demo car is no longer remembered between launches.
- Better help when something goes wrong. SubieScope keeps a log file, notices when it quit unexpectedly and starts without connecting automatically, and has Help > Send Diagnostic Report to bundle the log, your Mac model and any crash reports (personal details are left out).
- More forgiving with quirky adapters and cars. Values a car does not answer are skipped, adapters that can't read several values at once fall back to one at a time, and cars that won't list what they support are probed directly.
- Universal app. Works on Apple silicon and Intel Macs.
Install: download SubieScope.dmg below, open it and drag SubieScope to Applications (replace the old version if you have one). You need macOS 14 or newer, and either a VAG KKL cable with an FTDI chip or a Bluetooth 4.0 (BLE) ELM327 adapter.

SubieScope 0.2.1
What's new
- Now works on Intel Macs too. SubieScope is a universal app: it runs natively on both Apple silicon and Intel Macs (for example a 2019 MacBook Pro). Before this, the download only started on Apple silicon.
Install: download SubieScope.dmg below, open it and drag SubieScope to Applications (replace the old version if you have one). You need macOS 14 or newer and a VAG KKL cable with an FTDI chip.

SubieScope 0.2.0
What's new
- Save and share your trouble codes. A new Export menu on the Trouble Codes page copies every code, with or without its possible causes and fixes, or saves them as a PDF or text file to send to your mechanic or post on a forum. Right-click a single code to copy it, or use the Copy button in its explanation.
- Knock check (Troubleshooting, on the road): a short drive with a cruise, a few 4th gear roll-ons and an optional pull. You get a clear verdict on how much knock there is (None, Light, Moderate or Heavy), at which rpm and load it happens, what the ECU has learned, and whether hot intake air, a lean mixture or a hot engine played a part. Likely false knock is called out separately.
- Clearer connection card: a Connected badge, a Connect button when you are not connected, step-by-step instructions on how to connect, and cable detection that updates while you plug in. Connect to Car takes you straight out of log playback.
Install: download SubieScope.dmg below, open it and drag SubieScope to Applications (replace the old version if you have one). You need macOS 14 or newer and a VAG KKL cable with an FTDI chip.
