@mattmezza mattmezza released this 17 Oct 18:26
v0.10.5
349a1b5

Super Screencast 0.10.5

Community and Pro use the same 0.10.5 application version.

  • Fixes macOS recording audio scheduling by waiting for capture batches before committing audio, addressing intermittent audio gaps.
  • Renders the film countdown guide in the macOS preview.
  • Restores the macOS control panel when clicking the Dock icon.
  • Adds native speech-model setup for the Pro provider.
  • Shows the applied recording format and provides explicit container choices.
  • Records native model transport under its upstream curl license.

The macOS recorder CI suite passed for the latest fixes. Release workflows test
and package the exact tagged commit for Apple Silicon macOS, static Linux x86_64,
and Arch Linux x86_64. Hardware recording quality and long-duration A/V drift
remain subject to real-device validation; no hardware acceptance is claimed.

The macOS app uses ad-hoc signing and is not Developer ID signed or notarized.
Screen, camera, and microphone access require macOS permission grants. The static
Linux executable needs host desktop services, fonts, keyboard-layout data, and
PipeWire configuration; its panel uses X11/XWayland. Arch packages target current
Arch library ABIs. Corresponding source materials and checksums accompany the
platform downloads. Community assets contain no private Pro code.

Install on Mac

Download cast-0.10.5-macos-arm64.dmg, open it, and drag Super Screencast.app onto Applications. Eject the disk image and open the app from Applications. The DMG uses the same verified app as the ZIP; the ZIP remains available. The additive DMG checksum is in cast-0.10.5-macos-arm64-DMG-SHA256SUMS. Apple Silicon and macOS 15 or newer are required.

Super Screencast Community v0.10.4

@mattmezza mattmezza released this 17 Oct 09:41
v0.10.4

Super Screencast 0.10.4

Community and Pro use the same 0.10.4 application version.

  • Adds the native macOS recorder and control panel, with display, camera,
microphone, system audio, composition, and MP4/MKV recording adapters.
  • Adds the native composition/recording preview and recording countdown window.
  • Ships a macOS app with bundled runtime libraries and the website's app icon.
  • Enables the private Pro provider on macOS, including cinematic composition,
speaker notes, and a controlled whisper.cpp CPU speech helper.
  • Adds selected-display pointer coordinates and permission-controlled mouse input
for Pro cursor following and automatic cinematic click zoom.
  • Keeps MP4 recordings recoverable as MKV until finalization, and refreshes the
completed path before reporting status or creating automatic subtitle sidecars.
  • Preserves the Linux Arch packages and adds a static Linux executable artifact.

The static Linux executable includes X11, Wayland, a software-rendered panel,
and built-in PipeWire client modules. It still needs host desktop services,
fonts, keyboard-layout data, and PipeWire configuration. SDL D-Bus IME and GPU
rendering are disabled in this static variant.
The static panel uses X11 and requires XWayland on Wayland desktops; Wayland
screen capture remains available through the desktop portal and PipeWire.

The macOS download is an Apple Silicon app with ad-hoc signing. It is not
Developer ID signed or notarized. Its Info.plist records the minimum macOS version
required by its bundled libraries; the source adapters target macOS 13 onward.
Screen, camera, and microphone access require macOS permission grants. Automatic
click zoom requires Input Monitoring and restarting capture. Independent cursor
smoothing is unavailable with the embedded capture cursor.
Virtual camera/microphone, RTMP, window/region capture, and global keyboard
annotations/hotkeys remain unsupported on macOS. Continuous system-audio quality
and long-duration A/V drift still need hardware validation; intermittent system
audio gaps were observed in the earlier development port.

Private Pro acceptance bundles use controlled LGPL media and CPU speech
libraries, the existing production public license trust, and the reviewed EULA.
They require a valid license and an explicitly installed speech model. Official
Pro publication retains its separate signing, dependency review, and hardware
acceptance requirements; Community releases do not contain private Pro code.

cast v0.10

@mattmezza mattmezza released this 06 Oct 20:25
v0.10
1bef373

Cast Community 0.10.0

Community keeps every existing capture, webcam/composition, virtual-camera,
recording, RTMP/RTMPS, zoom/follow, overlay, annotation, audio, panel, CLI and privacy
feature free, including commercial use. The original public core remains MIT.

This release introduces the public edition boundary, shared license-store ownership,
configuration migration/diagnostics and explicit build identities used by a separate
private Pro desktop provider. Community builds do not require private code or crypto.
Pro installs separately. Its private provider implements cinematic zoom, local
transcription/subtitles and speaker notes; editable recording projects remain planned.
The future commercial Go server is only a private README placeholder.

Community keeps system FFmpeg and its existing libx264/CRF recording behavior.
Pro requires the separately reviewed LGPL media profile and has no Community updater
fallback. Public source archives exclude all local prompt briefs and private artifacts.

Validation includes native Community and Pro core/command/panel suites, transactional
configuration and edition-worker tests, offline signed update tests, side-by-side
install checks and CLI/completion regressions. See docs/split-verification.md and
docs/media-profile.md for current exact results and remaining acceptance limits.
Owner-host acceptance also passes daemon IPC, three-output private ingest,
Xorg capture/preview/countdown, native panel navigation and lifecycle, and
authenticated Pro Notes window exclusion. Release CI repeats the Community checks.

No production Pro keys, proprietary feature source or commercial service
is published with this Community release. Architecture-specific system library ABIs,
driver/device setup and third-party license obligations remain as documented.

cast v0.9

Cast v0.9

Cast now launches as a desktop application: starting cast opens the control panel
and starts the daemon, or attaches to the running instance. Installed panel builds
include a desktop launcher and icon. The same cast command works from dmenu.
Use cast --headless for the foreground daemon without a panel; cast panel stays
an attach-only control window.

The pinned header is now Preview on/off, Close panel, Stop/Start daemon and Quit.
Close panel leaves outputs and preview running. Stop daemon finishes recordings
and leaves the panel available to restart using the last acknowledged settings.
Quit requires confirmation, shuts down outputs and preview, and waits for recording
files to finish saving. Recording and streaming never restart implicitly.

All 64 numeric panel settings now have sliders and precise editable inputs, with
practical dragging ranges and full supported input ranges. Independent settings
apply immediately: anchors, layout choices, toggles and swatches on selection;
sliders on release; typed values on Enter or leaving the field. Coupled settings
retain Apply/Revert. The Xorg screen eyedropper shows a live color square beside
the crosshair; Wayland uses the desktop portal's own picker.

No configuration fields are added. Existing privacy pause, freeze/blur layering,
recording cut/resume, countdown and streaming reveal semantics remain unchanged.
Session edits and navigation never write to the config file. Releases target
current Arch Linux x86_64 with Xorg, Wayland and panel support.

Verification: Xorg/Wayland/panel build and production controller/lifecycle tests
with -Werror; CLI/IPC, decoded privacy/recording, three-output streaming and
installer tests; Xorg capture/countdown checks; native panel workflows at 1× and
2× density over 360–800px widths; start/stop/restart, retained outputs on Close,
confirmed Quit and stale-socket crash recovery. X11 eyedropper tracking and cleanup
were also checked under ASan/UBSan with native and mocked portal fixtures.

cast v0.8

@mattmezza mattmezza released this 05 Oct 12:00

Cast v0.8

The native control panel now puts output tasks first. Operate has four permanent
cards with direct virtual-camera, recording, streaming and audio actions. A slim
privacy/preview/close header replaces the lane chips. Streaming setup is the first
action when no destination is configured; connection state remains separate from
the explicit action that reveals composition.

Compose has six focused pages, with Essentials first and one All settings
disclosure for the remaining controls. Layout diagrams, an eight-point camera
anchor grid, segmented toggles, sliders, scrollable device/enum pickers, swatch/hex
color pickers and one annotation matrix replace repetitive browsing controls.
All 149 existing settings have one home. Recording configuration lives on the
Recording card, audio settings on Audio, and streaming fields in setup.

Camera and stage size sliders keep dragging local, then send one acknowledged
setting update on release. This updates active outputs and preview together.
Other composition fields retain pinned Apply/Revert drafts. Pages, scroll and
All settings state are remembered for the same daemon session without writing
configuration. Lane links in the status bar jump to their task cards.

The daemon, IPC command names and floating preview remain unchanged. Privacy
restoration, pause/freeze/blur layering, same-file recording cut/resume, countdown
exclusion and reconnect behavior retain their existing semantics. Closing the
panel only closes that window.

No configuration fields are added. Existing released configuration files need no edits.
Configs from the earlier unreleased overlap-policy experiment must remove
[capture] exclusion; keep mask_color for opaque masking.
Pause/blur output fonts remain configured through the file; the panel itself uses
only bundled Inter. Dragging the camera in preview and preview-only geometry
updates are not implemented. Device choices come from existing discovery commands.
Monitor/region masking cannot reconstruct desktop pixels hidden by the controls;
Wayland keeps its existing capture and native-preview limitations.

Release assets target current Arch Linux x86_64 and include Xorg, Wayland and panel
support. Installation dependencies and virtual-camera setup remain unchanged;
packages neither create devices nor start services automatically.

Verification: full Xorg/Wayland/panel build and routes with -Werror; make check
(unit, IPC, decoded media/privacy, stream networking and mock portal tests); Xorg
capture checks with and without MIT-SHM; countdown/recording exclusion; native
panel workflows at 1× and 2× density over 360–800px widths; Xorg color validation
and annotation matrix; pointer drag/release transaction checks. The native design
was inspected in one screenshot batch and one confirmation after scoped fixes.

cast v0.7

@mattmezza mattmezza released this 04 Oct 00:01
v0.7

cast v0.7

Cast now has three independent outputs: Virtual camera for conferencing, Recording
for files, and Streaming for one RTMP/RTMPS destination. The native control panel
follows the supplied Operate/Compose design with pinned lane states and privacy
controls, dedicated Compose pages, explicit drafts, Apply/Revert and acknowledgement.
The floating preview has three target pills and local lane status outside outgoing
video, plus bundled Inter countdown numerals and Cancel. Both windows retain their
utility classes for floating window managers.

  • Compose uses a flat seven-section list with inline labeled controls, sticky Back,
Alt+1…7 section jumps, 1/2 tabs, sheet-first Escape and Enter to apply a draft.
  • Per-view scroll and navigation survive panel close/reopen for the same daemon
session. New daemon sessions reset navigation; no configuration is written.
  • The compact two-row header and pinned current-section draft bar leave more room
for settings. A two-row status bar provides composition links, zoom reset,
connection state and marked command feedback, with ellipses for long text.

Streaming sends H.264/AAC FLV with bounded raw queues, lag/write deadlines, finite
reconnects and independent audio privacy. Start connects in solid pause; Resume
explicitly reveals the composition. Network and encoder work run in an isolated
worker so blocked DNS, TLS or writes cannot hold capture, controls or recording.
TLS verifies certificates and hostnames. Stream keys are read only from owned
regular mode-0600 files; configuration, CLI, snapshots and logs contain no secret.
Twitch/YouTube quality presets and setup recipes use current official guidance.

Migration

This release deliberately removes the old virtual-camera spelling without aliases:

  • cast live … → cast virtual …; --no-live → --no-virtual.
  • Preview target live → virtual; annotations lane live → virtual.
  • [annotations] live_keys/live_clicks → virtual_keys/virtual_clicks.
  • Status JSON uses virtual and virtual_* fields; consumers must update.

Stop the old daemon before updating and restart it afterward; panel and daemon must
come from the same build. Runtime settings remain session-only. Existing user config
is never overwritten. See the complete configuration and
streaming guide.

New config fields are [annotations] stream_keys/stream_clicks and [stream]
service, server_url, key_file, tls_ca_file, video_bitrate_kbps,
audio_bitrate_kbps, encoder_preset, queue_frames, lag_ms,
connect_timeout_ms, write_timeout_ms, reconnect_attempts,
reconnect_initial_ms, reconnect_max_ms. Preview target also accepts stream.
Empty server/key defaults leave streaming unconfigured and never start a broadcast.

Verification and distribution

Private synthetic fixtures cover decoded H.264/AAC cadence and silence, independent
three-output effects/group restoration, atomic locks, retired queued/in-flight media,
reconnect freshness, rejected publish, TLS trust/hostname, blocked DNS/TLS/write
cancellation, native panel workflow/density/resize, and Xorg preview/countdown.
Verification details distinguish measured protocol behavior
from account/device acceptance.

Release assets target current Arch Linux x86_64 with Xorg, Wayland and the native
Clay/SDL3 panel. Install with the README's curl command or update with
cast update v0.7. Source and checksum/provenance assets accompany the package.
FFmpeg/PipeWire/Fontconfig/FreeType remain required; optional GUI dependencies are
SDL3/SDL3_ttf. No new runtime library is introduced for streaming.

No real Twitch/YouTube account, public broadcast, webcam or user desktop is used in
these release fixtures. Actual service acceptance, physical AV latency and real
Wayland compositor behavior remain user-run acceptance. Already accepted network
media cannot be retracted; blur is a presentation effect rather than confidentiality.

cast v0.6

@mattmezza mattmezza released this 03 Oct 21:51
v0.6
59bcce7

cast 0.6.0

  • Every existing next cycle gains prev, including layout, presets, camera
anchors/shapes and Xorg monitors; camera aspect can cycle in both directions.
  • New stage layout places the screen opposite the camera anchor, preserves both
aspect ratios and naturally overlaps the sources when their sizes require it.
  • Screen layers gain configurable borders and rounded corners; stage has its own
screen size and margin. CLI, panel and config expose the controls.
  • Screen/stage backgrounds can use a fresh blurred screen frame (default), a
camera frame, a solid fill, or a shared linear gradient with two/three colors,
adjustable angle and middle-stop position. Camera gradient mode shares these colors.
  • Add an anchored transparent image logo and static text with a selected font,
independent horizontal/vertical edge distances, size, color and opacity.
  • Rounded screen masks use scanline spans; logos and static text are prepared
once and reused while fresh blurred backdrops track each source frame.
  • The panel keeps these controls in Source and Effects disclosures, with separate
floating preview and output/privacy actions always reachable.

Runtime changes remain session-only. Composition controls never resume outputs or
change recording state. Stop cast before updating, then restart daemon and panel
from the same build. Arch x86_64 assets include Xorg, Wayland and panel support,
checksums, matching source and build provenance.
