Getting Started

Browser instrument

  1. Open the Quesynth browser instrument.
  2. Click, tap, or press a key once to authorize browser audio.
  3. Select KEYS for the on-screen keyboard or MIDI to connect an available Web MIDI input.
  4. Select a patch from the name field at the bottom of the panel.

The computer keyboard can also play notes while the instrument page has focus. Browser audio cannot begin before a user gesture; this is a platform security requirement rather than an instrument setting.

VST3 installation on Windows

  1. Download or build the 64-bit VST3 release.

  2. Copy the complete Quesynth.vst3 directory to:

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3

  3. Rescan plugins in the DAW.

  4. Insert Quesynth as an instrument and open its editor.

The .vst3 directory is a bundle. Its interface is stored under Contents\Resources\ui; copying only the binary produces a working audio plugin without the Quesynth panel.

CLAP installation on Windows

Copy the following release items to the host's CLAP directory, normally C:\Program Files\Common Files\CLAP:

Quesynth.clap
Quesynth-ui\
WebView2Loader.dll

The CLAP distribution is not a single bundle, so all three items must remain together. Rescan plugins after copying them.

Standalone application

Run quesynth.exe and confirm that the system output level is reduced before playing the first note. The standalone host opens the default WASAPI output and all available WinMM MIDI inputs. An optional .sy1 path may be supplied on the command line to load that patch at startup.

Interface runtime

The native editor requires the Microsoft Edge WebView2 runtime, which is included with current Windows installations. If it is unavailable, the engine can still load and produce audio, but the embedded panel is unavailable and a plugin host may show generic parameters.

First sound-design exercise

  1. Load an initialized patch.
  2. Set oscillator 1 to sawtooth and oscillator 2 mix to zero.
  3. Select LP12 and lower cutoff until the tone becomes dark.
  4. Increase filter-envelope amount, then set a short filter decay.
  5. Set amplifier attack to zero, sustain to a moderate level, and release to a comfortable tail.
  6. Check the patch over at least three octaves and adjust master volume.

This exercise demonstrates the source–filter–amplifier structure described in Synthesis theory.

Saving and persistence

Use WRITE to store the current sound in a bank slot. The browser and plugin hosts use different persistence mechanisms; consult Banks and patches before relying on a bank for a session.
