New Features

  • Run without interactive prompts — Set MCP_ENGINE_DISABLE_ELICITATION env variable to run in environments where pop-up prompts aren't possible. Confirmation and URL prompts are skipped, and the existing fallbacks for clients that don't support prompts still apply. In case you run into Claude Code bugs related to that, please use this as workaround.
  • User-context calculated columns — You can now create and update calculated columns that evaluate in a specific user/row context, and these columns show up correctly in model listings, search, and reports. Refer to https://www.sqlbi.com/articles/introducing-user-aware-calculated-columns-in-power-bi/ for more details.
  • Field parameter operations — manage_schema can now create and update field parameters, including custom extra columns, so you can build report slicers that switch between measures or fields.
  • Optional DAX function parameters — DAX user-defined functions (UDFs) now support optional parameters with default values, and complex signatures with nested calls or quoted text are handled reliably. Refer to https://www.sqlbi.com/articles/optional-parameters-in-dax-user-defined-functions/ for more details.
  • Batch Desktop M changes — When working with Power BI Desktop, you can now make several Power Query (M) edits in a row before syncing, instead of discarding and reloading after every single change. Responses show how many changes are pending and which ones they are.
  • Choose guardrails by intent — The single broad destructive-change-protection policy pack has been split into several focused packs, so you can block exactly what you want — for example, deletes with dependencies, deletes that affect whole tables, or all delete operations.

Improvements

  • refresh tool renamed to manage_refresh — To keep it consistent with the other manage_* tools.
  • Clearer policy impact — Measure updates now report what a policy would affect, and when a policy blocks an action it explains which dependencies were impacted.
  • manage_tests peer assertions — Assertions that reference peer values are now supported and documented.
  • Better Power Query parameter handling — Native Power Query parameter lists are recognized, suggested values are returned, and text parameter values are passed through correctly.

Bug Fixes

  • The server now fails safely when a client can't confirm a Desktop reload, and surfaces Desktop sync reload failures instead of hiding them. Thank you to Jakub H. for the bug reports.
  • Desktop M sync checks are more accurate: they include column details when something doesn't match, ignore system columns, prefer the current item, and require a pending change before syncing.
  • Power Query query groups are now handled correctly, including assigning them by folder and cleaning up leftover empty groups.
  • Calculated-column compatibility upgrades now require explicit opt-in and clearly report when an upgrade fails.
  • Relationships: invalid cross-filter shortcuts are rejected, and active_only=false now correctly returns all relationships.
  • DAX UDFs: unsupported shorthand syntax is rejected, function bodies are normalized, and validation problems are reported clearly.
  • Cancelling a bulk operation is now recorded in the audit log.
  • Data masking: numeric mask markers are no longer added to text columns.
  • Service workspace selection no longer uses stale cached data.
  • Security hardening: stricter limits in browse-only mode, completion suggestions kept separate per model, prevention of recursive or alias-based attempts to bypass policy, more complete read/write classification, and audit records reserved before changes are written.
