Release list
CapaTheNotch 0.3.1 (beta)
CapaTheNotch 0.3.1, a beta for Apple Silicon on macOS 14 or later.
Updating from Capacity Notch 0.3.0: the application has a new name, and
so does its file. Quit Capacity Notch, delete CapacityNotch.app from
Applications, move CapaTheNotch.app there and open it. The permissions you
granted are kept, and so are your settings. macOS will likely ask for
Open Anyway in System Settings → Privacy & Security again, since this
build is not notarized.
If Claude Code's status line runs the bridge from CapacityNotch.app,
CapaTheNotch asks once, on its first launch, whether to point that path at
itself. Only after a yes does it open ~/.claude/settings.json, and it
changes nothing else there.
What's changed:
- Dropping a file opens the Shelf. Carry a file towards the notch and
it opens on the Shelf, showing where to drop it, instead of a tab
growing under the strip. As the file comes near, Kapa grows to fill the
drop area and eats it there. Carried elsewhere, the notch goes back as
it was. - Sounds. A few moments now have a short sound: a file taken by the
Shelf, a Clipping copied, the notch pinned, dictated text kept or not,
the speech model ready, a Provider that stopped answering, a Capacity
Alert and the window recovering after it, Kapa tapped or saying hello.
Turn them off in Settings → General; they also follow macOS's interface
sound setting, and nothing plays while the Teleprompter runs.
The repository is now github.com/maximfakel/capa-the-notch and the site
capathenotch.tech; the old addresses lead there.
Capacity Notch 0.3.0 (beta)
Capacity Notch 0.3.0, a beta for Apple Silicon on macOS 14 or later.
Updating from 0.2.10: quit the running copy, replace CapacityNotch.app
in Applications with the new one, and open it. macOS will likely ask for
Open Anyway in System Settings → Privacy & Security again, since this
build is not notarized. The permissions you granted are kept.
What's new:
- Kapa. The surface has a character now: a small cyan bell whose face
says what the page it stands on already says. On the Capacity card that
needs a look it is worried, waiting for a reset, sleepy over stale
numbers or puzzled when a Provider is disconnected. It opens its mouth
for a file held over the closed notch, eats it when you let go and
chews. It nods along in headphones while music plays, listens beside
the dictation orb and is pleased when the text goes in. Its eyes follow
the pointer, a pointer left on it brings hearts, a tap squashes it. It
never stands in the compact strip, holds still beside the Teleprompter
and under Reduce Motion, and draws only while it moves. It is the
application's icon and its menu bar mark too. Turn it off in Settings →
General. - Capacity as gauges. Each Quota Window is an open arc filled to what
is left, coloured by its Capacity Pace, with the time it comes back. - OpenCode Go as a third Provider, read only after you consent, with
at most two Providers on at once. Its key is read from OpenCode's own
file at each request and kept nowhere. - The Shelf in three tabs — Files, Screenshots and Clipboard. New
screenshots macOS saves land under Screenshots; on its own switch, off
by default, text you copy is kept under Clipboard, never what password
managers mark. - Every open page is the same height, so the surface no longer jumps
as pages turn, and the closed Teleprompter shows as many lines as that
room holds — six, or five at the largest size. - Nothing connected shows the three Providers' marks and one way to
Settings.
What's fixed:
- An idle surface costs almost nothing. The dictation orb went on
drawing thirty frames a second while hidden; idle, the application now
uses about 0.2% of a core instead of nearly 10%. - Pages turn cleanly. A turning page fades at the surface's sides
instead of being cut by its outline, and a swipe whose end was lost
settles instead of leaving pages part-turned. - Music comes back after a failed test, and a track change keeps its
page and cover; the music page stays while the Module is on, showing the
last track. - Files that overflow the Shelf scroll under a swipe instead of
turning the page.
It uses sherpa-onnx (Apache-2.0), ONNX Runtime (MIT) and Murmur (MIT);
GigaAM is MIT; Geist is under the SIL Open Font License 1.1; OpenCode's
mark is MIT. Kapa uses techniques learned from Coucou (MIT), written afresh.
All are credited in THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md.
Built with ./Scripts/build-release.sh from the tagged commit; the same
commit and Swift toolchain produce the same archive.
Capacity Notch 0.2.10 (beta)
Capacity Notch 0.2.10, a beta for Apple Silicon on macOS 14 or later.
Updating from 0.2.9: quit the running copy, replace CapacityNotch.app
in Applications with the new one, and open it. macOS will likely ask for
Open Anyway in System Settings → Privacy & Security again, since this
build is not notarized. The permissions you granted are kept.
A release of fixes.
What's fixed:
- Codex is read again with a recent ChatGPT app. ChatGPT moved the
Codex it carries to a new place inside itself, and Capacity Notch looks
there now. A Codex installed with npm works too: it is started with the
same places to look for programs as Terminal has, so it finds Node.
Before, either case showed Codex as having no data, with a message about
the App Server protocol that was not the real reason. - An image dragged off the Shelf is written from what the drag started
with, whatever the destination does in the meantime.
It uses sherpa-onnx (Apache-2.0), ONNX Runtime (MIT) and Murmur (MIT);
GigaAM is MIT; Geist is under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. All are
credited in THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md.
Built with ./Scripts/build-release.sh from the tagged commit; the same
commit and Swift toolchain produce the same archive.
Capacity Notch 0.2.9 (beta)
Capacity Notch 0.2.9, a beta for Apple Silicon on macOS 14 or later.
Updating from 0.2.8: quit the running copy, replace CapacityNotch.app
in Applications with the new one, and open it. macOS will likely ask for
Open Anyway in System Settings → Privacy & Security again, since this
build is not notarized. The permissions you granted are kept.
What's new:
- The Shelf. A new Module, off until you turn it on in Settings →
Modules. Drag a file towards the closed notch: the strip gives a little
and a drop tab grows beneath it. Let go, and the file waits on the Shelf,
the open surface's new page, until you drag it somewhere else — where it
is moved as Finder would move it. Up to twenty files; the Shelf empties
when Capacity Notch quits and keeps only references, never copies. - Images and files from the clipboard. On a switch of their own, off by
default: a screenshot taken to the clipboard, an image copied from a
page, media or a document copied in a messenger lands on the Shelf by
itself. Images with no file of their own are held in memory and become a
file where you drop them. Copying in Finder, text and passwords are left
alone. - Page buttons. With four pages to move between, the dots under the
open surface grow into buttons with each page's icon as the pointer comes
near, and a click goes straight to that page.
It uses sherpa-onnx (Apache-2.0), ONNX Runtime (MIT) and Murmur (MIT);
GigaAM is MIT; Geist is under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. All are
credited in THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md.
Built with ./Scripts/build-release.sh from the tagged commit; the same
commit and Swift toolchain produce the same archive.
Capacity Notch 0.2.8 (beta)
Capacity Notch 0.2.8, a beta for Apple Silicon on macOS 14 or later.
Updating from 0.2.7: quit the running copy, replace CapacityNotch.app
in Applications with the new one, and open it. macOS will likely ask for
Open Anyway in System Settings → Privacy & Security again, since this
build is not notarized. The permissions you granted are kept.
A release of fixes.
What's fixed:
- "Five-hour" and "Weekly" in the strip now show the window of that
length. Before, they took a Provider's shortest and longest windows,
which for a Provider with other windows were not five hours or a week. - Dictation's messages are plain sentences, in your language. When
text could not be inserted or pasted, the capsule could show internal
details — process numbers, an Apple Event error code — in English. - An earlier Dictation error no longer hides the next one before its
time. - Dictation's shortcut shows Space and the arrows by name, as the
Teleprompter's does, instead of a blank or an unreadable keycap. - A speech model download cancelled at the very end no longer leaves
the 170 MB archive in the temporary folder. - The volume bar listens to the Mac's audio only while it is showing,
and not at all with the Music Module off.
It uses sherpa-onnx (Apache-2.0), ONNX Runtime (MIT) and Murmur (MIT);
GigaAM is MIT; Geist is under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. All are
credited in THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md.
Built with ./Scripts/build-release.sh from the tagged commit; the same
commit and Swift toolchain produce the same archive.
Capacity Notch 0.2.7 (beta)
Capacity Notch 0.2.7, a beta for Apple Silicon on macOS 14 or later.
Updating from 0.2.6: quit the running copy, replace CapacityNotch.app
in Applications with the new one, and open it. macOS will likely ask for
Open Anyway in System Settings → Privacy & Security again, since this
build is not notarized. The permissions you granted are kept.
What's new:
- A new onboarding. It looks like Settings and walks through six steps:
a welcome, permissions, Providers, Music, the Teleprompter and Dictation.
Each Module can be switched on right there, and Dictation's model can be
downloaded and its shortcut changed without leaving it. It speaks Russian
with the rest of the interface. To see it again: Settings → Diagnostics →
Run Onboarding Again. - Every permission at once. Notifications, the microphone,
Accessibility and System Events are asked for together on their own
step, one by one or with Allow All, so no prompt interrupts work later. - Providers can be skipped during onboarding and turned on later in
Settings.
What's fixed:
- Dictation could read audio from a microphone queue that had already been
closed when the input changed, such as a headset connecting mid-recording. - Setting up Dictation no longer says the microphone will be asked for
when access has already been given.
It uses sherpa-onnx (Apache-2.0), ONNX Runtime (MIT) and Murmur (MIT);
GigaAM is MIT; Geist is under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. All are
credited in THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md.
Built with ./Scripts/build-release.sh from the tagged commit; the same
commit and Swift toolchain produce the same archive.
Capacity Notch 0.2.6 (beta)
Capacity Notch 0.2.6, a beta for Apple Silicon on macOS 14 or later.
Updating from 0.2.5: quit the running copy, replace CapacityNotch.app
in Applications with the new one, and open it. macOS will likely ask for
Open Anyway in System Settings → Privacy & Security again, since this
build is not notarized. The permissions you granted are kept.
What's new:
- Volume on the music page. At the right of the controls: the bar sets
the Mac's volume and the speaker mutes and unmutes it. It follows the
keyboard and Control Center, and it asks for no permission. An output
whose volume macOS cannot set, such as some displays, shows no bar. - Geist on the surface. The surface, the music row and the Teleprompter
are set in Geist, as Settings already were. The figures in the open strip
are the same size as in the closed one.
What's fixed:
- A click on the music bar moves the track there and the bar stays put,
instead of springing back and jumping forward.
It uses sherpa-onnx (Apache-2.0), ONNX Runtime (MIT) and Murmur (MIT);
GigaAM is MIT; Geist is under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. All are
credited in THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md.
Built with ./Scripts/build-release.sh from the tagged commit; the same
commit and Swift toolchain produce the same archive.
Capacity Notch 0.2.5 (beta)
Capacity Notch 0.2.5, a beta for Apple Silicon on macOS 14 or later.
Updating from 0.2.4: quit the running copy, replace CapacityNotch.app
in Applications with the new one, and open it. macOS will likely ask for
Open Anyway in System Settings → Privacy & Security again, since this
build is not notarized. The permissions you granted are kept.
What's new:
- Softer shoulders. Where the surface meets the menu bar the curve is
twice as generous and drawn as part of the surface itself. - It rises to meet the pointer. As the pointer comes near the closed
surface it grows a little, and settles back when the pointer moves away.
Opening still waits for the pointer to rest on it.
What's fixed:
- On a 14-inch MacBook Pro at its default scaling, the curve at each side of
the closed surface no longer overlaps its corner by a hair.
It uses sherpa-onnx (Apache-2.0), ONNX Runtime (MIT) and Murmur (MIT);
GigaAM is MIT; Geist is under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. All are
credited in THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md.
Built with ./Scripts/build-release.sh from the tagged commit; the same
commit and Swift toolchain produce the same archive.
Capacity Notch 0.2.4 (beta)
Capacity Notch 0.2.4, a beta for Apple Silicon on macOS 14 or later.
Updating from 0.2.3: quit the running copy, replace CapacityNotch.app
in Applications with the new one, and open it. macOS will likely ask for
Open Anyway in System Settings → Privacy & Security again, since this
build is not notarized. The permissions you granted are kept.
What's new — the closed strip fits the notch it sits on:
- Narrower, and sized to the Mac. 370 points wide on a MacBook Pro at
its default scaling, 410 at More Space, instead of 422 everywhere. On a
14-inch at the default scaling it takes a quarter of the menu bar rather
than more. - Shoulders. Where the surface meets the menu bar it curves into it,
closed and open, instead of meeting it at a corner. - A 22-point corner and twelve points to each edge, as drawn.
It uses sherpa-onnx (Apache-2.0), ONNX Runtime (MIT) and Murmur (MIT);
GigaAM is MIT; Geist is under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. All are
credited in THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md.
Built with ./Scripts/build-release.sh from the tagged commit; the same
commit and Swift toolchain produce the same archive.
Capacity Notch 0.2.3 (beta)
Capacity Notch 0.2.3, a beta for Apple Silicon on macOS 14 or later.
Updating from 0.2.2: quit the running copy, replace CapacityNotch.app
in Applications with the new one, and open it. macOS will likely ask for
Open Anyway in System Settings → Privacy & Security again, since this
build is not notarized. The permissions you granted are kept.
What's new — the closed strip:
- Both Providers on: each side shows its Provider's five-hour window,
so the strip reads the same two windows every time. Settings → Providers
→ "Shown in the closed strip" switches it to the week, or to whichever
window has least left. - One Provider on: it takes both sides — its five hours on the left,
its week on the right, each with its own pace. - No Provider on: the strip is empty and the surface stays open on the
Connect cards until one is turned on. - In Russian, the cards say "Исп" for used, to fit.
It uses sherpa-onnx (Apache-2.0), ONNX Runtime (MIT) and Murmur (MIT);
GigaAM is MIT; Geist is under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. All are
credited in THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md.
Built with ./Scripts/build-release.sh from the tagged commit; the same
commit and Swift toolchain produce the same archive.
