Marmalade STT 1.0.1

Choose a tag to compare

@maxwhipw maxwhipw released this 17 Oct 14:31

Marmalade STT 1.0.1 fixes the reproducible build, so F-Droid can publish the 32-bit ARM version.

  • F-Droid's build of 1.0.0 for 32-bit ARM (armeabi-v7a) differed from ours only in the precompiled ART startup profile (assets/dexopt/baseline.prof and baseline.profm), which the Android build tools don't produce the same way on every machine. The APKs no longer include that profile. Android now learns which code to compile ahead of time on the phone itself, so the first few launches after installing or updating can be slightly slower.
  • Nothing else changed.

Which APK? Most phones: marmalade-stt-1.0.1-arm64-v8a.apk. Older 32-bit phones: marmalade-stt-1.0.1-armeabi-v7a.apk. Android 9 or later. Both are signed with the same key as 1.0.0, so they install over it.

Marmalade STT 1.0.0

@maxwhipw maxwhipw released this 11 Oct 05:05

Marmalade STT 1.0.0, the first release: private, offline speech-to-text for Android.

What it does

  • A voice keyboard: your keyboard's mic key opens a Marmalade panel that types what you say. It works with HeliBoard, FlorisBoard, AnySoftKeyboard, Unexpected Keyboard, FUTO Keyboard, Android's own keyboard and others; the README's "Works with your keyboard" table lists the keyboards tested and how to set each one up.
  • A speak-now sheet for apps that ask Android for speech input, and Android's speech recognition service.
  • Speech engines picked for your phone and language: Parakeet Ultra (25 European languages, the default), Parakeet 110M (English), Parakeet Japanese, Canary 180M Flash (English, Spanish, German, French), Qwen3-ASR (Chinese, Korean), Nemotron 3.5 (Hindi, Arabic, Vietnamese) and Whisper Large v3 Turbo (100 languages).
  • Engine cards show each engine's speed on your phone and its quality in your recognition language as five-segment meters. An engine not tested in your language shows its rating in its main language ("Tested in Japanese").
  • The mic opens as soon as you tap it and keeps what you say while the engine loads, so your first words aren't lost. Engines load faster and stay loaded while the voice keyboard, the speak-now popup or the Dictate screen is open.
  • A setup guide for the microphone, an engine for your phone, your keyboard and Android's speech recognition service. Its "Open settings" buttons find the right Settings page on Android 9 to 17 and say where to go next when only a nearby page opens.
  • Stop by tap, pause, end word ("over") or Smart Turn, which waits until you sound finished.
  • Text cleanup: capitals, replacements and snippets in any language; filler words, voice commands and numbers as digits in English. Phrases engines "hear" in silence, like "Thank you.", are removed automatically when the mic heard only silence.
  • Accessibility mode, a switch in the setup guide (or Settings → Appearance → High contrast), turns on high-contrast colours. The app was tested with TalkBack and at the largest text sizes.
  • The app itself is in 21 languages.

Privacy. Audio never leaves the phone and is never saved. The internet is used only to download the engines you choose; each file is checked against a pinned SHA-256 hash. No analytics, no accounts.

Support. Settings → Support links to GitHub Sponsors. Voluntary; the app is the same either way.

Which APK? Most phones: marmalade-stt-1.0.0-arm64-v8a.apk. Older 32-bit phones: marmalade-stt-1.0.0-armeabi-v7a.apk. Android 9 or later.
