v1.0.7

@github-actions github-actions released this 18 Oct 21:31
v1.0.7

What's new

  • Drag snips out of Recent. Press on a saved snip in Recent and drag it where you need it, as you would a file from Explorer: onto a web page or a chat such as Discord to upload it, onto a terminal to paste its path, or onto a folder or the desktop to copy it. The file in your snips folder always stays where it is. HDR snips drag their normal image. Snips that were only copied, pinned or used for Copy text have no file, so they don't drag.

What's new

  • Precise nits. A new toggle in Settings › General shows nits to three decimals (for example 480.125) instead of whole numbers. It applies to the readout while you snip, its peak and mean, the editor's readout, the colour picker's loupe and what Shift+C copies.
  • Nits always use a full stop as the decimal mark, so copied text such as #FFFFFF, 480.125 nits reads the same in every language.

What's new

Spotlight. A new annotation tool (S): draw one or more rectangles and everything outside them is dimmed, in the SDR image and in HDR copies alike.

Magnifier. A new annotation tool (M): drag over a detail and an enlarged copy appears beside it, joined by a line. Drag the enlarged copy to move it, or its corners to zoom from 1.5× to 8×.

Text background. Turn on Text background beside the text sizes to put text on a filled box in the annotation colour, so it stays readable over a busy picture.

Search and filter Recent snips. The search button (or Ctrl+F) finds snips by file name or by text you copied with Copy text. The filter button narrows the list to HDR, SDR, window, pin or Copy text snips, and to today, the past 7 days or the past 30 days.

Longer history. Settings › General › Recent › Show up to lists 20, 50, 100 or 200 snips. Snips that leave the list keep their files.

Recent shows more of what you do. Pins and Copy text made on the snip screen now appear in Recent, and rows are tagged Window, Pin or Text.

Keys at a glance. Press F1 or ? on the snip screen (or the keyboard button on the toolbar) to see its keys.

Freeform from the keyboard. In freeform mode, Space starts a lasso, the arrow keys move it, Space adds a corner, Backspace removes one and Enter closes it.

HDR on the clipboard (optional). Settings › Output › HDR on the clipboard also copies HDR snips as JPEG XR, for apps that can paste HDR. The normal image is copied as before.

Help when something goes wrong. The tray menu has Re-arm hotkeys, and Settings › About has Copy diagnostics, a report to paste into a bug report.

Lighter and smoother.

  • ToneSnip uses about 10% less memory while idle in the tray.
  • Saving JPEG and UltraHDR snips needs about 80 MB less memory at its peak on a large screen, and is faster.
  • With GPU tonemapping turned off, snips no longer leave about 40 MB behind after they finish, and the second and third snips after starting are no longer slow.
  • Dragging shapes in the editor, and the crop frame, is much smoother.

Fixes

  • Show in folder works again in the installed app, from Recent and from the editor.
  • The snip screen closes cleanly when a monitor is plugged in, unplugged or changes resolution.
  • The snip screen reliably takes the keyboard, and Escape closes it, even when no window had focus.
  • The tray icon stays sharp when you change display scaling.
  • The arrow keys move the pointer across gaps between monitors of different sizes.
  • Moving the selection with the arrow keys before annotating now moves what is saved.
  • "Capture the mouse pointer" now also works on monitors ToneSnip copies with GDI.
  • Changing an annotation colour or size no longer turns "Clip annotations to the lasso" back on.
  • Snips whose file was moved or deleted now drop out of Recent instead of staying as "File moved or deleted". Snips on an unplugged drive or offline share are hidden until it comes back.
  • Recent snips cope better with broken thumbnails and with saving straight after a snip.

Install

Install tonesnip-x64.msix (recommended; if you haven't before, trust tonesnip.cer first — see Install), or download tonesnip.exe and run it directly. tonesnip.exe needs the .NET 10 Desktop Runtime. SHA256SUMS.txt lists the checksums of the files.

v1.0.4

What's new

Copy text. Press T on the snip screen (or use the new toolbar button) and select an area: ToneSnip reads the text with Windows' built-in OCR, in your Windows languages, and puts it on the clipboard. In the editor, Ctrl+T reads an area you drag, and Ctrl+Shift+T reads the whole image.

Pin to screen. Press P on the snip screen, or choose Pin from the notification, Recent snips or the editor, to keep a snip floating above your other windows. Drag it to move it, scroll to zoom, Ctrl+scroll to fade it, and right-click for more. Arrow keys and +/− work too.

Colour picker. Press C or use the new toolbar button: a zoomed loupe follows the cursor, and a click copies the colour as hex (or rgb(), set in Settings). On HDR monitors, Shift+click also copies the brightness in nits. The editor has the same picker (K).

Window snips capture the window itself. Alt+PrintScreen now captures just the window, including any part covered by other windows, with its rounded corners left transparent.

Faster, lighter HDR snips. HDR screens are now tonemapped on your graphics card: snips appear sooner and use noticeably less memory.

A better editor. Zoom is smooth and goes from 10% to 3200%, with sharp pixels when zoomed in. On HDR snips, the status bar shows the brightness in nits under the pointer.

More ways to snip.

  • A new setting, Capture the mouse pointer, includes the pointer in your snips.
  • You can snip with the keyboard only: the arrow keys move the pointer, Space starts and finishes a selection, Alt+arrows resize it, and Tab steps through windows.
  • Screen readers now announce the snip screen and its modes.

Smaller download. tonesnip.exe is 60 MB smaller and the MSIX 25 MB smaller. Updating tonesnip.exe now also cleans up the temporary files the previous version left behind.

Fixes

  • Opening a snip in the editor from a notification now brings the editor to the front.

Install

Install tonesnip-x64.msix (recommended; if you haven't before, trust tonesnip.cer first — see Install), or download tonesnip.exe and run it directly. tonesnip.exe needs the .NET 10 Desktop Runtime. SHA256SUMS.txt lists the checksums of the files.

v1.0.3

@github-actions github-actions released this 23 Sep 17:12
v1.0.3
98c70cb

What's new

Faster and lighter snips.

  • The frozen screen appears sooner after you press the hotkey. The toolbar now fades in after the picture instead of holding it up.
  • HDR snips use much less memory. On a typical HDR desktop, peak memory for a full-screen snip dropped by about 20% on the test PC, and more is freed once the snip is done. Saving an HDR copy as a gain-map JPEG now needs a fraction of the memory it used to.
  • The Recent snips flyout opens faster and loads thumbnails as you scroll. Notifications no longer wait on the thumbnail being built.
  • Closing the editor no longer stalls when nothing was changed or the snip was already saved.

Now built on .NET 10. tonesnip.exe now needs the .NET 10 Desktop Runtime instead of .NET 9, whose support ends in November. The MSIX includes everything it needs, as before.

Fixes

  • Start with Windows no longer starts ToneSnip twice when both the MSIX and tonesnip.exe are installed, and a startup launch never opens Settings.
  • Hotkeys after idle: ToneSnip is more robust when the displays sleep and wake. A snip that can't get a picture from Windows now ends with a notification saying so, instead of silently leaving the hotkey unresponsive.
  • Settings are saved when you sign out or shut down, and ToneSnip returns to the tray after it's updated.
  • The HDR copy of a snip always matches its regular copy, even if you change the tonemap settings before saving from the editor.
  • The notification shows a placeholder instead of an empty box when a thumbnail can't be shown.
  • Editor status messages are announced by screen readers.

Install

Install tonesnip-x64.msix (recommended; if you haven't before, trust tonesnip.cer first — see Install), or download tonesnip.exe and run it directly. tonesnip.exe needs the .NET 10 Desktop Runtime.

v1.0.2

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 14 Sep 16:19

What's new

Choose how your selection looks. Settings › General › Selection frame now offers three styles:

  • Normal — the outline from earlier versions, with the size and nits beside the cursor. This stays the default.
  • Viewfinder — accent-coloured corner brackets, with the selection's size shown above its top-left corner.
  • Guides — the selection's edges extend across the screen as guide lines, and a magnifier by the cursor shows the exact pixel with its coordinates and nits. Handy for lining things up precisely.

Fix

  • The size and nits readout beside the cursor now follows Windows display scaling, so it's no longer tiny or hidden under the cursor on high-DPI laptops or monitors.

Install

Install tonesnip-x64.msix (recommended; if you haven't before, trust tonesnip.cer first — see Install), or download tonesnip.exe and run it directly.
