Version 1.16.0: statistics for a book, a project, or all projects
Version 1.16.0: statistics for a book, a project, or all projects
New
- Statistics for all projects. A switch at the top of Statistics picks what the numbers count:
- This book: one book of the open project. Pick the book under the switch. It shows when the project has 2 or more books.
- This project: all books of the open project, as before.
- All projects: every project on the bookshelf, also the books in a shelf group. The words per day of all projects are added up. Words per book lists every book, by project.
- Words per day, per book. The Write tab now also saves which book the words go to, so This book can count them.
Notes
- Your old statistics stay. This project and All projects show all your old days.
- This book only counts words written from this version on. Before, the app kept one count per day for the whole project, so older words cannot be split by book.
- In All projects, the daily goal is the goal of the open project. Each project keeps its own goal.
- The build tool (Vite) is updated to fix 3 security alerts. These were in a tool for building the app, not in the app itself.
- The Android app is unchanged and stays at 1.8.0.
Version 1.15.0: shelf groups, copy to another shelf, and a blue look
Version 1.15.0: shelf groups, copy to another shelf, and a blue look
New
- Shelf groups: each book its own world. A group is one shelf on the bookshelf with several books. Each book in a group has its own characters, places, notes and maps. Use this for books that do not share a world, such as practice novels.
- On a shelf, click Give each book its own world… to turn the shelf into a group. The first book keeps the world. The other books each get a new, empty world.
- Click + in a group to add a new book with its own world.
- Rename a group by clicking its name. Ungroup makes each world a shelf of its own again.
- In Manage shelves…, pick a group for a project, or type a name to make a new group.
- Drag in a group.
- Drop a book in a gap to move it there. If it comes from another shelf, it gets its own new world.
- Drop a book on another book to add it to that book's world. The app asks first.
- A placeholder shows where the book came from, so you can put it back.
- Copy to another shelf. Click Copy to… on a character, place, lore note, faction, item, glossary word, source or Notes page. Pick the items and the shelf to copy to. The originals stay where they are.
- Relationships, faction members, mood board pictures, @ links and citations come along when both ends are copied.
- Maps and the timeline are not copied.
Changed
- Blue look. The app now uses the blue of the icon, with a navy background, instead of purple. This is in the dark and the light theme.
Fixed
- Vim label. With Vim keys on, the mode label (NORMAL, INSERT, VISUAL) was hidden behind the word count bar on the Write page. Now it always shows above the bar, wherever you are in the text.
- On a normal shelf, the drop placeholder was sometimes one place off when you dragged a book.
Notes
- Groups are only a name in the list of projects. Your data files do not change.
- The Android app is unchanged and stays at 1.8.0.
Version 1.14.0: @ for non-fiction
Version 1.14.0: @ for non-fiction
New
- Cite with @. Type @ and the start of an author or a title. Your sources show in the list, marked cite. Pick one, and a citation goes into the text, the same as with the Cite button. Click the citation to add a page.
- Glossary words with @. Glossary words show in the @ list too. They go into the text as a link. Point at the link, and the name card shows the meaning. Open goes to the word in the Glossary.
Fixed
- In a non-fiction project, typing @ did nothing, because there was nothing to link to. Now it offers your glossary words and sources.
- On the name card, Show beside now only shows for characters, places and lore notes. Before, it also showed for factions and items, but the reference pane cannot show them, so it did nothing.
Notes
- The @ list only offers things from the tools that are on in the project.
- The Android app is unchanged and stays at 1.8.0.
Version 1.13.0: name cards
Version 1.13.0: name cards
New
- Name cards. Point at an @ link in your text for a moment. A small card shows who or what it is: the colour, name, role or type, and a short description. Open opens it, Show beside shows it in the reference pane. A click still only moves the cursor, so writing is not interrupted. It works for characters, places, lore notes, factions and items.
Fixed
- When you open a scene on the Write page or a page on the Notes page, the cursor is now in the text. You can type, or use the Vim keys, at once, with no click first. It does not take the cursor away from a title field, the search box or an open window.
Notes
- The guide has new pictures of the name card and of Maps & Paths.
- The Android app is unchanged and stays at 1.8.0.
Version 1.12.1: the window stays maximized
Version 1.12.1: the window stays maximized
Fixed
- The window remembers if it was maximized. Close Typewriter while the window is maximized, and it opens maximized again the next time.
Notes
- The setting is in
window.json, in the Typewriter settings folder. Delete the file to go back to the normal window. - The Android app is unchanged and stays at 1.8.0.
Version 1.12.0: a Code font for the editor
Version 1.12.0: a Code font for the editor
New
- Code font. A new font for the text editor: JetBrains Mono Nerd Font. All its letters have the same width, so the cursor and Vim keys line up well. Pick it under Look > Font > Code. It comes with the app, so you do not have to install it.
Fixed
- After an update on Windows, the old program file (
typewriter.exe.old.…) is now deleted the next time the app starts.
Notes
- The font is JetBrains Mono (no ligatures) from Nerd Fonts, under the SIL Open Font License. The license is in
frontend/public/fonts/JetBrainsMono-OFL.txt. - The app file is about 4 MB bigger because of the font.
- The Android app is unchanged and stays at 1.8.0.
Version 1.11.0: updates and an installer
Version 1.11.0: updates and an installer
New
- Updates from GitHub. Typewriter can check for a new version and update itself. Use Check for updates next to the version at the bottom of the menu, or under Updates in Export & Backup. A window shows what is new, with Update now, Later and Skip this version.
- Check when the app starts. On at first, and once a day while the app stays open. Switch it off under Updates in Export & Backup. Only the newest version number is asked for: nothing of your writing is sent.
- Safe updates. Each update is checked against its checksum and a signature before anything changes. A file that does not match is thrown away. Before the restart, the app saves everything and keeps a copy of your data (
before-update-….db). - A Windows installer. It installs for you only, with no admin prompt, adds a Start menu entry and (if you want) a desktop shortcut, and an entry in Settings > Apps. Uninstalling keeps your writing and your settings.
- Portable. The plain
.exeis the same program, without an installer.
Notes
- The installer is not signed with a bought certificate, so Windows shows "Windows protected your PC" the first time. Click More info, then Run anyway.
- This is the first version that can update itself. Earlier versions must be replaced by hand once (run the installer, or use the new
.exe). - The Android app is unchanged and stays at 1.8.0.
v1.10.1
Version 1.10.1: fixes from a code review
Fixed
- Moving a book to another shelf:
- Links in the text are fixed. An @ link loses its link (the name stays), and a citation becomes plain text such as (Clear, 2018, p. 45), marked "needs a source". Comments keep their marks.
- If a move fails half way, the copy is taken out again, so a book is never on two shelves.
- Old snapshots no longer break after a move.
- A new or moved book goes after the highest number on the shelf.
- Bookshelf screen:
- A search result picked on the shelf opens in front of it.
- Shortcuts of the page behind the shelf (F11, Ctrl+H) do nothing while the shelf is open.
- Esc in Project settings no longer closes the shelf too.
- A rename or removal in "Manage shelves…" shows at once.
- A new cover made in Export & Backup shows the next time you open the shelf.
- Clicking the book you are writing in keeps your chapter and scene. Each project remembers its own place.
- Enter on the ↻ button makes a new cover instead of opening the book.
- Scrolling with the mouse wheel while dragging a book moves the drop place too.
- Before a move or a project switch, the app checks that everything is saved, and stops if a save failed.
- A project whose data file is missing shows a warning instead of an empty shelf.
- Word counts on the shelf now match the Write screen.
- Vim keys:
- In focus mode, the Esc that leaves Insert or Visual mode no longer also leaves focus mode.
- In Normal mode, Enter, Backspace, Delete and Tab act like Vim and no longer split, join or delete text by accident.
- Ctrl+B makes the selection bold in Visual mode. Ctrl+Shift+F no longer also pages. Paging drops a waiting command.
- Keys that need AltGr (
{ [ ~on many keyboards) work. - A line break inside a paragraph counts as a space for text objects.
- The @ list no longer opens in Normal mode.
- Switching the Vim keys on or off keeps the cursor where it was, and the selection pop-up keeps working.
- Data safety:
- Switching projects waits for a phone sync, the daily backup and bookshelf jobs to finish.
- Two projects made at the same moment get different ids.
- The phone pairing file is written safely.
- When a scene or chapter goes, item log entries and path steps that pointed at it lose that link. Undo brings it back.
- Docs: the Using Typewriter guide no longer has a copied second half, the texts match the app, and the README steps for getting back a removed project are fixed.
Notes
- After moving a book, plot holes you had dismissed for its scenes may show again.
- Switching the Vim keys on or off still starts the undo history again.
- The Android app is unchanged and stays at 1.8.0.
v1.10.0
Version 1.10.0: Vim keys in the text editor
New
- Vim keys. Press Look, then tick Vim keys to edit with Vim. It works in every place that has the text editor (Write and Draft). It is off at the start, and it is a choice of this computer.
- Modes. The editor starts in Normal mode. A label at the bottom right shows NORMAL, INSERT or VISUAL, and any keys that wait for more (such as the
dofdd). - Text objects.
iw aw iW aW(words),is as(sentences),ip ap(the paragraph), quotes (",', the backtick, and curly quotes “ ”), and brackets (( ) b,{ } B,[ ],< >). Use them withd,c,yandv, for exampleciw,daw,yi",vip. - Moving the page.
Ctrl+dandCtrl+umove half a page,Ctrl+fandCtrl+ba page. The cursor stays on the same row of the screen. - The page follows the cursor when it moves with
j,k,gg,Gand so on. Lines are not hidden behind the toolbar or the word-count bar.
Fixed
- Keys typed with Shift (
",$,() no longer cancel a command that waits, sod$,c$,f(andvi"work on a real keyboard. - Esc leaves Visual mode at once, also when the pop-up for selected text is open.
Notes
- Vim mode uses a young add-on (
tiptap-extension-vim) with some of our own code on top. Some Vim keys are missing:.(repeat),/search, marks, macros and:commands. - Typing
"may not work on a keyboard layout where it is a "dead key" (for example US-International). - The Android app is unchanged and stays at 1.8.0.
v1.9.0
Version 1.9.0: the bookshelf and word goal bars
New
- Bookshelf start screen. The app now opens on a bookshelf. Each shelf is a project, and its books stand on it as cards with covers. A Bookshelf button in the menu brings you back at any time.
- Covers. Each book gets a generated cover. A ↻ button makes another one. If you made or chose a cover in Export & Backup, the shelf shows that one.
- Drag and drop. Drag a book to put the books in order, or drop it on another shelf to move it to that project. The book lifts, the others glide aside, and a dashed "Drop here" place shows where it will land. Esc puts the book back.
- Moving a book takes its chapters, scenes, versions, comments, snapshots, passes and cover with it. Typewriter asks first.
- Add place. A dotted outline with a plus and "Add" on each shelf adds a book. + New shelf adds a project. Click a shelf name to rename it.
- Hover lift. A book rises a little when you point at it.
- Progress bar on each book. It uses the book goal. With no book goal, it uses the chapter goals added together. With no chapter goals, it uses the scene goals added together.
- Goal bars on the Write page. Under the text, you see a bar for the book, chapter and scene goals that are set. Levels with the same goal share one bar.
Fixed
- The shelf's inner shadow is softer in light mode.
Notes
- Characters, places, sources and arcs belong to a project. They stay behind when a book moves, and links to them from that book are cleared.
- A made-up shelf cover is only for the shelf. It is not used when you export.
- The Android app is unchanged and stays at 1.8.0.
