⚠️ This is an early release, so expect bugs. Please report anything that breaks in Issues, with the game, the graphics route and your Mac.The Arm64 FEX build needs macOS 26.4 or later. Most of the changes below are in the FEX build. The regular x86_64 build is still here, works as it did, and gets the fixes marked (both builds).
Downloads
| Build | For | File |
|---|---|---|
| Arm64 FEX (new) | macOS 26.4+; Wine runs natively, games through FEX | MetalSharp-1.0.0-arm64-FEX.dmg |
| x86_64 | Wine and games through Rosetta 2, as in 0.80.0 | MetalSharp-1.0.0-arm64.dmg |
If you're already on 0.80.0, the updater asks which build you want, and it can switch you to the other build later. Your games and prefixes come with you.
MetalSharp Wine 4.0: an Arm64 Wine with FEX
- Native arm64 Wine 11.20. x86_64 programs run through FEX and ARM64EC, and 32-bit programs through FEX and WoW64. ARM64 programs run natively. It needs no Rosetta 2, and no hardware TSO: FEX emulates x86's memory ordering in software.
- FEX tuned for macOS on Apple silicon: 4K pages and a low 4 GB address space for 32-bit programs, x87 in reduced precision as under Rosetta, and msync.
- Signed with a Developer ID, hardened runtime, and notarized by Apple.
- Release: MetalSharp Wine 4.0
Graphics routes (FEX build)
D3DMetal can't run through FEX on an Arm64 Wine: it is x86_64 and needs Rosetta. The FEX build has two D3D12 pipelines instead:
- Mullion (a DXMT fork) translates D3D12 to Metal at feature level 12_2, and runs most D3D12 games that already worked. It also runs D3D11 and D3D10, for 64-bit and 32-bit games.
- VKD3D-Proton for macOS runs D3D12 on MetalSharp's MoltenVK, and also runs most D3D12 games.
- Feature level: 12_1 by default, raised to 12_2 when MoltenVK ray tracing is turned on in Settings.
- Shader conversion: Apple's Metal Shader Converter turns its shaders into Metal directly, which makes shader compiles much faster.
Two other routes are available too:
- DXVK-macOS runs D3D9, D3D10 and D3D11. It is Gcenx's fork, built with the pull request that lets D3D9 run on MoltenVK.
- WineMetalGL 3.7.0 runs OpenGL 1.0 to 4.6 and GLES 2.0 to 3.2 on Metal.
Mullion and VKD3D-Proton are in active development. Please report graphics bugs to their own repositories: Mullion and VKD3D-Proton-MacOS.
Newly working games and game fixes
- God of War Ragnarök
- Risk of Rain 2
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
- Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered
- Need for Speed: Most Wanted
- Dragon's Dogma 2
- Deadlock
- The Rockstar Games Launcher loads without issues.
- Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition no longer stutters.
Other fixes and changes
- Settings:
- Toggles for the Metal HUD, frame rate limits and MoltenVK ray tracing.
- Shader caches show their real size for Mullion, VKD3D-Proton and DXVK, and clear correctly.
- MetalFX is off by default in new installs (both builds).
- Per-game launch environment (FEX build):
- Each game gets its own
.metalsharp/launch.env, which MetalSharp Wine applies however the game starts: from Steam, a launcher, or directly. - MetalSharp no longer copies D3D DLLs into game folders, which anti-tamper took for injected DLLs. This fixed Dragon's Dogma 2 closing about 40 seconds in.
- Each game gets its own
- Updates and migration:
- Each build and version takes its own upgrade path, so a FEX update replaces the runtime without converting your prefixes again.
- The Wineboot hang while converting a 0.80.0 Steam prefix to Arm64 FEX is fixed.
- Switching back to x86_64 restores your old prefixes and removes the FEX runtime completely.
- Recovery can repair either build.
- A rule set per build:
- Each build has its own per-game routing rules:
mtsp-rules.tomlfor x86_64 andmtsp-rules-fex.tomlfor FEX. - On FEX, Dragon's Dogma 2, Red Dead Redemption 2 and God of War Ragnarök default to Mullion.
- Each build has its own per-game routing rules:
- Welcome guide: the first time you start the FEX build after x86_64, a short guide introduces the new build and its graphics routes.
- Offline setup: the FEX build prepares new prefixes from MetalSharp Wine's own bundled files.
- Folder access: the FEX build asks macOS for access to Documents and external drives up front, so saves and Steam libraries on other drives work.
- Steam (both builds): a game launched while Wine Steam is still signing in waits for Steam's logon instead of quitting.
- Force-quit (both builds): the games it stops are cleaned up instead of left behind as zombie processes.
🙌 Contributors
Thanks to @MohamedElGhandour for two fixes in this release:
- Deadlock is routed to D3DMetal (#742).
- Direct game launches now wait until Wine Steam has logged on (#741). Steamworks games like Deadlock used to quit when started before Steam finished signing in.
