Cubic Nextfare is a ticketing platform. This document describes the format used by systems on MIFARE Ultralight, which are exclusively used for single-use tickets.

All numbers on the card are stored as little-endian. Full reverse engineered specification is available from http://www.lenrek.net/experiments/compass-tickets/

Identifying a Cubic Nextfare MFU card

  • Card serial numbers start with "0001", and have 20 digits. (eg: 0001 1234 5678 9012 3456)
  • The card is made of paper or cardboard.
  • The card magic identifier on the card.

Note: These only apply to Nextfare on MIFARE Ultralight. Other systems use different numbering.

Deployments (cities)

  • Compass (Vancouver, BC, CA)
  • Ventra (Chicago, IL, US)

Note: Single-use Opal (Sydney) and Clipper (San Francisco) cards use a different system.
