Roue Libre 1.4.0
The bikes a network leaves outside its stations are on the map now, if you ask for them, and a journey can set off from one. A station's sheet says how full the batteries standing at it are. Philadelphia, Las Vegas and Bentonville join the catalogue, which holds 340 networks in 39 countries. And the application is lighter by a megabyte and a half.
Updating from any earlier version keeps your cities, your favourites and your settings. No dataset changed: a city downloaded by an earlier version is read exactly as it is.

What is new
- The bikes outside the stations, drawn on request. Most networks report bikes away from their docks, and until now the application ignored them. A switch in the display settings draws them — off by default, because it reads a feed twenty times the weight of the station feed, and because what those bikes are is not something the application can vouch for. Their marker is smaller than a station's disc and carries no count, since a bike is one bike; a tap says what kind it is, how much charge it holds and how far away it is. Depots are drawn as they are: the 145 bikes parked in one spot of an industrial zone are what the feed reports, and no guesswork tells a depot from a kerb.
- A journey can set off from one of those bikes. You are standing beside the bike you picked, so no walk is traced to it, and the ride ends at a station — a bike goes back to a dock. The ordinary search never picks a street bike by itself: nothing in the feed says you may take one.
- Whether you may take such a bike is the network's rule, and its feed does not carry it. Some networks let you leave a bike anywhere inside a zone, others fine you for leaving it off a dock. The application states nothing about it, says so plainly, and a window says as much the first time you turn the switch on.
- A station's sheet says how full the batteries are. Under the split between mechanical and electric bikes, one line gives the charge of each electric bike standing there, fullest first, and how many bikes the network reports out of service — three electric bikes of which two are flat is a different station from three full ones. Past four bikes the line gives the two ends rather than a list, and a row unfolds the station bike by bike, with each one's identifier, kind, charge and state. It reads the same feed as the bikes above, under the same switch.
- When a station's two feeds contradict each other, the sheet says so. The count in the disc and the bike-by-bike list come from two files written apart, and nothing obliges a network to keep them in step: of the 53 stations of one network measured, 24 published a figure no reading of its own list could account for. Rather than show two counts and let you guess which is wrong, the list now names no figure of its own, and a line says in words that the two cannot both be right.
- Philadelphia, Las Vegas and Bentonville. Networks whose docks are perfectly real were being refused because their feed publishes no fixed capacity — Indego, the whole BCycle family, the Dutch OV-fiets, Gothenburg, Toruń. Their live free-dock count answers instead now, and three checks make sure it can be believed. Nothing changes for a network that declares a capacity.
- A megabyte and a half lighter, and nothing removed that you can see: the licence texts that shipped eight times over now ship once, the letters of a typeface that only ever draws figures are cut to the nineteen it draws, the pictures of a map control the application turns off are no longer carried, and the city configurations travel stripped and in a single stream. 7.9 MB on arm64-v8a, against 9.4 a version ago.
What is fixed
- Turned sideways, the address search and the station list give their answers back. They spent the screen on a header, so with the keyboard open the address search drew none of its answers and the station list a row and a half, while the "nearest station first" button ended over the search field. The header and the list share the width now instead of the height, and at the largest text sizes the header grows and scrolls rather than losing its first line off the top of the screen.
- A station whose name begins with an accent is filed under its own letter. "Épinettes" sat below "Tinqueux", and "Évreux" below "Zurich" in the city list. The alphabet is now the reader's own: Romanian files "ă" after "a" where French reads it as an "a", and Turkish keeps "ı" and "İ" apart.
- An Arabic title is no longer cut short with the bar half empty. The settings screen read "الإعدادا…" for want of eight pixels — the project's typeface holds no Arabic letter, and the tightening it asks for reached the fallback face all the same and broke the way Android measures a cursive line.
- A word shared into the application asks rather than chooses. "Reims" opened a journey to "Rue De Reims", a street of another municipality. A shared text must now designate a street by two words before its first result can become a destination; below that it is offered as a list to pick from, which is what a single word deserves.
- Eighteen networks were listed under an identifier rather than under their name — "bogota-bikebogota" in the city list, on the settings row and at the head of the storage screen. Eight of them gained a real name: àVélo, Bikebogota, Dej Velo, Dublinbikes, Mibici, Nike Biketown, Sibiu BikeCity, Trinity Metro Bikes.
- A station's two counts are read out loud. They were drawn onto a canvas and named nowhere, so a screen reader was given "bikes" and "free docks" and no number at all. And the sheet's two journey buttons no longer end at different depths when a label wraps.
- The journey detail stops reading "null" where a ride is too short or too flat for a climb to be named, and a journey whose destination is the arrival station no longer ends on a walk of zero metres counted as a minute.
- A unit symbol keeps its case: the storage screen read "3,7 MO · 31 AOÛT 2026" where French writes "Mo", a capitalised symbol no longer being a symbol. And the two toggles at the bottom left of the map have a ground, so the streets no longer show through the words.
- A network publishing its bike counts as an object rather than a list is read. One shape was declared where two are in the field, and the whole document failed on it, so every station of such a network showed a question mark with its counts sitting there all along.

Roue Libre 1.3.0
The maps answer the hand: both of them turn under two fingers and tilt, and a single compass puts back the north and the flat. You can name your home and your work once and reach them in a press wherever a journey's end is asked for. And five started translations became real ones, so the application now speaks thirty languages.

What is new
- Both maps turn under two fingers, and tilt. The main screen and the journey result took neither gesture. They take both now, and a map you learn to handle on one screen answers the same way on the other. The tilt stops at forty-five degrees, and that ceiling is not a taste: a tilted map looks towards the horizon, so it lengthens what the screen covers of the ground and eats into the room the application keeps so that the edge of the served area is never shown. Forty-five is where the map reaches exactly twice as far ahead of its centre as behind it, and the arithmetic still closes.
- One compass gives back both. It shows up when the map is off north or off flat, sits in the top row beside the settings, and one press puts the map back on north and flat at once — a control whose only office is to undo something stays on the screen while there is something to undo. Opening the application, or turning the phone, always gives a map facing north and lying flat.
- A home and a work, in a new "My places" section of the settings. Named once, they head the shortcuts wherever you say where a journey starts or ends — you go home and to work oftener than you aim at a spot on a map, and both answer in a single press, with no permission asked and no fix waited for. They are yours: erasable in one press, and a place the city in service does not cover stays, says so and stays erasable. Nothing you look up or travel through is ever kept; what the application holds is what you told it about yourself, and only that.
- A place found on the map opens a sheet of what to do with it. The pill under the map knew one answer — it erased the point — so an address you had just found could be looked at and nothing else. Leave from here, go there, hand the place to a navigation application, clear it: the same sheet serves the address you searched for, the place another application sent you, and the point still there after you turned the phone.
- Five languages more, thirty in all. Basque, Catalan, Chinese, Galician and Serbian held the English text in every one of their 365 strings; they hold their own now, store description included. Every sentence this version adds travels with them rather than waiting a release in English.
- "Download only on Wi-Fi" replaces "download only on an unmetered connection", which named what Android decides on in a word nobody uses; the exactness moved to the line under it. And the warnings before a transfer no longer assert that the connection is billed by the megabyte — your phone knows a network calls itself metered, never what your plan charges for it.
What is fixed
- A point outside the covered area now says which end of the journey is at fault. One sentence served both, and a journey prepared before setting off — from where you are, still elsewhere, to an arrival already inside the city — sent you to correct the one point that was right.
- "Open in a navigation application" is no longer cut by the bottom edge of the screen at a large text size, and no longer reopens Roue Libre on a phone where it is the only application answering
geo:. - Sharing an ordinary text no longer announces streets the text does not hold. That reading stays — it is what finds the address in "Meet me here: 12 rue Nationale, Lille" — but it now offers what it found as a guess, needs two words of the street written in full rather than one, and keeps the house number it used to lose.
- A
geo:link whose coordinates cannot be read is answered instead of opening the map in silence. - The storage screen says a download has begun the moment you press, instead of showing nothing until the request gives up, and a set whose transfer failed keeps the reason rather than falling back to "Not installed".
- A downloaded manifest is refused unless it names the city in service, so no host can install one city's map in another's folder.
- Nothing the application holds leaves with a device-to-device transfer:
allowBackup="false"answers for the cloud alone, and on some manufacturers' phones the transfer would have carried your settings — and with them the places you just named — to another device. - A redirection towards a cleartext address is sent back to TLS by the application itself, rather than merely being turned down by Android.
- The address the city catalogue is fetched from now comes from the copy shipped inside the APK and from nowhere else, and every answer read from the network is bounded, so a host cannot decide where the next request goes nor how much memory it costs.

Roue Libre 1.2.4
Six cities more, and one of them had been refused over a handbike. Wrocław, Bogotá, Offenburg, Sibiu, Buzău and Slobozia join the catalogue, which now holds 337 networks in 39 countries. Bogotá is the first city served in South America.

What is new
- Six conurbations join the catalogue. Wrocław (273 stations), Bogotá (251), Offenburg (91), Sibiu (57), Buzău (47) and Slobozia (26). All six had been turned away by a rule of the survey that reads a network's fleet: GBFS has no form factor for a handbike, a tricycle or a bike trailer, so operators declare them as "other" — and "other" was read here as a car or a moped. Wrocław's WRM and Sibiu's BikeCity were refused over a handbike, Bogotá's over a MANOCLETA, Ortenaukreis's over a bike trailer. What has no name of its own is now judged on whether the rider turns the pedals; cars and mopeds still disqualify a network on their name alone.
- A city this version cannot serve says so, instead of failing quietly. The catalogue of cities is refreshed over the network while each city's configuration ships inside the application, so a catalogue published after your version names cities your version has nothing for. Choosing one used to leave every screen looking as though no city had been picked, with no explanation at all. Such a city is now shown greyed out, saying it is not available in this version, and it cannot be chosen.

What is new
- The point glides from fix to fix instead of jumping. Positions arrive a couple of seconds and a few metres apart, and a disc redrawn wherever each one lands teleports: an eight-metre jump every two seconds reads as a glitch, where a point that walks reads as you. The circle of uncertainty travels with it. If you have asked Android to remove animations, the glide steps aside and the point jumps as before.
- The point greys once the fixes have deserted it. A minute after the last position, a walker is some eighty metres away — often a street over — so a disc still drawn full is asserting something nobody is measuring. Its ink now drains to a soft grey at that age: "last seen here" rather than "you are here". The point is not withdrawn, where the device was last seen still being worth showing.
- The point says which way it is going, while that is measured. A cone peeks out from under the disc, pointing along the direction of travel the satellites deduce from the movement itself. Stop walking and the cone goes: a thing nobody is measuring is not a thing to draw. No sensor was added for it and nothing new is asked of your phone.
- The wait for a first fix is visible on the locate-me button. Indoors that wait can run to ten seconds, and a button that sits there dead for ten seconds reads as broken rather than as searching. It now breathes while it waits, and says so to the screen reader too.
What it fixes
- The point keeps following you when you switch location on with the map already open. It used to wait for the screen to be rebuilt, however quickly you turned location back on.
- The journey screen starts following after a permission granted from the Android settings. It checked only once, when it opened; the map screen already re-checked on return, and now it does too.

A "no" is heard the first time. Refusing the location permission is now remembered instead of being asked again on the next screen, and three sources that were owed a credit get one: the licence each network publishes its data under, the gazetteer the city names come from, and two licence notices that ask to be reproduced.

What it fixes
- A refused location permission is never asked for unprompted again. The map put the request on every new session, so a "no" pronounced on the city screen's find-my-city button was answered by a second dialog as soon as the map opened. A refusal, wherever it is given, now outlives the session: only the buttons that need your position still put the question.
- Every network is credited with the licence its data is published under. Of 331 configurations, 104 named an operator and no licence anybody could read. Re-reading those feeds, 37 do publish one — through an address alone, which the generator had been dropping — and 67 name nothing at all, which the credit now says rather than trailing off after the operator's name. A licence is read from its address only against a table whose every entry was read off the document that address serves: one guessed wrong is worse than one left unnamed.
- GeoNames is credited among the data sources. The city names come from its gazetteer, under a licence that requires attribution, and the About screen credited every other source but it.
- The licences screen carries two notices it was missing, the map library's BSD-2-Clause and the public suffix list's MPL-2.0, both of which ask for their text to be reproduced in a binary distribution.

Roue Libre 1.2.1
The map renders for every phone again. Version 1.2.0 refused to install on phones without Vulkan, because the map library had made it a requirement; this version ships the same engine with its OpenGL ES renderer, which every supported phone carries — and the application is about two megabytes lighter.

- Installing no longer requires Vulkan. Since version 13 the map library renders through Vulkan by default and declares it a hardware requirement, so 1.2.0 could not be installed on an Android 8+ phone without it — against what this application promises. The OpenGL ES variant of the same library, at the same version, draws the same map with no such demand, and its native code is about two megabytes smaller per architecture.
Nothing else changes: a working 1.2.0 gains nothing here but the lighter file.

What this version brings
- The bike reads the provision a road carries — a protected track, a shared bus corridor, a painted lane, a pictogram — and stops detouring around a boulevard whose provision is real. Which side of the road counts follows the country of the city in service.
- The minutes announced stop believing a share bike coasts downhill at 45 km/h: both profiles now hold the 25 km/h a city rider actually brakes at, and an electric journey is sure again of its best pair of stations.
- A text shared with a sentence around its address — "Meet here: 12 rue Nationale, Lille" — now finds the street it names. Where several could answer, up to five are offered, each row saying its municipality and how far it is.
What it fixes
- A question — "Delete this data?" among nine — survives the phone turning over instead of vanishing unanswered.
- A connection dying in the middle of a download is announced as a lost connection, not an "unreadable file" — and checking for updates answers it the same way.
- A file imported that is not a dataset is refused by saying what the file really is, and a dataset offered on the wrong line is told apart from a file that is none of them.
- Held sideways, the welcome page and the journey result share the width instead of losing the height, and the keyboard no longer takes the whole screen for its own copy of a search field.
- The offline banner no longer covers the buttons it stood over, and no longer promises a "last known availability" you never had.
- With no city chosen, the station list asks "Which city?" with the button that answers it, instead of inviting a refresh that fetches nothing.
- At the largest text sizes, a button's label is no longer cut by its own outline, and a journey's place names are no longer justified bank to bank.
- A figure and its unit stay on one line, and the map describes itself in your language.

What this version brings
- The station list orders itself by proximity the moment it appears, wherever you come to it from, and each row says how far its station is. Nothing is asked of you for that — no permission prompt, no message — and where a position is not to be had, the alphabet stays.
- A "nearest station first" button floats over the bottom corner of the list, where your thumb is. It is the one place that screen ever asks for your location, it shows the wait while a fix is coming, and it brings the reordered list back to its first row.
- A station out of service says how long it has been silent: "Out of service · last reported 5 months ago", read from the very measurement the network published. A station shut this morning is worth waiting out; one that has said nothing for months has left the pavement.
- The settings name the network in service, where the city row used only to offer to change it.
- Without a base map installed, the application no longer opens on the panel saying the tiles are missing. It lands on the station list, which needs nothing downloaded, and goes back to the map the moment there is one to draw.
What it fixes
- The very first launch no longer dies when the message about choosing a city is pressed over the welcome sequence.
- A search, like the button, shows its list from the first row instead of leaving you several kilometres of stations further down.
- A station's sheet no longer measures a distance from a city you are not in.
- "Check for updates" with no connection no longer promises that a download will pick up where it stopped: nothing had been started.
- The answer to what you have just done is no longer wiped a fraction of a second later by a refresh failing beside it.
- On the favourites screen, the hint about holding a row to move it waits until there are two rows to move.
- The back gesture draws where it leads on Android 13 and 14.
One permission fewer
1.0.0 asked for the Wi-Fi permission. It came from the map library and nothing here ever read it, so it is gone: this version asks for the network state, the internet, and your location when the map or the station list needs it — and nothing else.

The first version of Roue Libre published. The three alphas before it were tagged and never released.
Which file to download
roue-libre-1.0.0-arm64-v8a.apk for any phone bought this decade. armeabi-v7a for an older one, universal if you would rather not choose — it weighs twice as much and holds every architecture.
What this version brings
- All 331 networks in 38 countries now have their data produced and published — no longer a hundred of them. Whichever city you choose, its map, its streets and its addresses are there to download.
- The application speaks 26 languages, chosen in the settings whatever language your phone is in.
- You can ask for a mechanical bike or an electric one, and the journey is worked out for that kind. It is a filter and not a preference: a station holding none of that kind is not offered at all, and when none is left nearby the answer says so instead of walking you towards a bike that is not there.
- A station says how many of its bikes are mechanical and how many are electric — a cog for the first, a bolt for the second. Where the figures do not add up, the total stands alone rather than a split nobody could verify.
- A journey says what it climbs, in metres, over the whole trip and step by step. A share bike is heavy, and a hill is worth knowing about before setting off.
- The summary ends on the bikes waiting at the departure station, the very counts the journey was worked out on.
- The ride draws the ground it runs over, the journey opens full screen, and a button brings the map back onto the whole of it.
- Any leg can be handed to a navigation application, for the turn-by-turn guidance this one deliberately does not give.
- The application has an icon of its own — a bicycle whose front wheel is a map — and the interface takes its colour.
After installing
The application ships with no geographic data at all. Choose your city on first launch and it downloads its map, its routing graph and its address index — from 3 MB for Auray to 143 MB for Paris, announced before anything is fetched, and over an unmetered connection unless you say otherwise. After that, everything works offline except the live bike counts.

Every APK here is signed with the project's key. You can verify it yourself:
