Omniphony v0.5.0
Highlights
Omniphony 0.5.0 reworks how the renderer behaves outside the speaker hull, adds headphone virtualization of the speaker render, and ships a set of built-in test tools for tuning a room by ear.
- Reworked out-of-hull rendering: energy-conserving, continuous panning outside the speaker hull, with three selectable modes —
virtual_poles(the new default), blended, andlegacy fadewhich restores the 0.4.2 behaviour — plus live blend-sharpness control from Studio. - New per-speaker test signal: band-limited pink noise played through the speaker's own crossover bands, gain and delay. It works with or without an input stream, follows the selection in toggle mode, and its level is peak-referenced with an exact full-scale ceiling.
- New object-injection test: place a test source anywhere in the room on a three-view CAD sheet with snapping, orbit it around its position, and hear where it lands. Eight test signals including a user-supplied WAV file, driven by a transport button; the injected source renders like any other object.
- Cascaded binaural mode: headphone virtualization of the speaker render, selectable through the new output-mode combo in Studio.
- 3D spectral phantom extraction for height-carrying inputs.
- Performance: an allocation- and lock-free render path, a per-block (no longer per-sample) speaker output stage, and a throughput-bound HRIR path with direction caching — guarded by a worst-case block-time gate enforced in CI.
- An objective DSP validation harness: golden null scenes, energy-conservation and seam-continuity measurements, LR4 reconstruction flatness, and end-to-end ITD checks.
- Studio: named config profiles, global energy and discontinuity heatmaps, selectable diffuse mirror axes, a vertical band cursor over the 3D view, crossover-band speaker colouring, and assorted UI and i18n fixes.
- Integration: per-environment runtime namespaces, a symmetric CLI⇄mpv standby handoff, decoder-bridge discovery in a system plugin directory, a Studio switch to activate orender in the user's mpv config, and a fixed binaural output path in the CLI renderer.
Behaviour change: content panned outside the speaker hull now uses virtual poles by default and will sound different from 0.4.2. Select the legacy fade out-of-hull mode to restore the previous behaviour.
Known limitations
- The speaker test produces no sound in binaural (headphone) output mode: it exercises the speaker path, which is not rendered there.
The decoder bridge is distributed separately.
macOS install note
The macOS build (Omniphony.Studio_aarch64.app.tar.gz / .dmg) is ad-hoc signed and not notarized yet, so Gatekeeper will refuse to open the downloaded app ("can't be opened" / "damaged"). After extracting, clear the download quarantine once:
xattr -rd com.apple.quarantine "/path/to/Omniphony Studio.app"
Alternatively: try to open it once, then System Settings → Privacy & Security → "Open Anyway" (if offered). See #201.
