Welcome to the initial public beta release of TalkTrace! 🎉

TalkTrace is a native macOS menu bar application that records what your Mac is playing plus your microphone into a single AAC .m4a file, followed by fast, on-device transcription via Apple Silicon Metal-accelerated whisper.cpp.

✨ Key Features

  • Zero-Driver Audio Capture: Powered by macOS 15 ScreenCaptureKit — no virtual audio devices (BlackHole / Loopback) required.
  • Combined Mix: Mixes system audio and your microphone input into a clean 48 kHz stereo AAC .m4a.
  • On-Device Metal Transcription: Automatically transcribes speech locally using whisper.cpp at ~50x real-time speed. Zero cloud API keys, 100% offline privacy.
  • Global Shortcut: Press ⌥⌘R (Option + Command + R) anywhere to start/stop recordings.
  • Visual Level Meters: Real-time dual VU/peak bars in the popover for system audio and microphone.
  • Smart Pause & Resume: Cleanly cuts out paused silence from the final file.
  • Sleep Prevention: Prevents macOS from sleeping during active recordings.

📦 System Requirements & Permissions

  • OS: macOS 15.0 (Sequoia) or later
  • Architecture: Apple Silicon (M1 / M2 / M3 / M4)
  • Permissions:
    • Screen Recording: Required by ScreenCaptureKit to capture internal system audio. (No screen pixels are ever recorded).
    • Microphone: Required to capture your voice.

🚀 Installation

  1. Download TalkTrace-1.0.0-beta.1-arm64.dmg below.
  2. Open the DMG and drag TalkTrace into your /Applications folder.
  3. Launch TalkTrace and grant permissions when prompted.
