I can submit a small install-docs/packaging PR for this. The error looks like an older editable-install toolchain path: with a pyproject.toml project, editable installs require a recent pip plus a setuptools backend that supports PEP 660. I will keep the change narrow: document upgrading pip/setuptools before pip install -e . and align the build-system requirement.
