In VS Code August 2025 (version 1.104), workbench.secondarySideBar.defaultVisibility was changed to visibleInWorkspace (originally introduced in VS Code April 2025 (version 1.100) as default hidden)

Update the docs to also speak to this.

Pull request overview

Updates the Custom Layout documentation to reflect the current default visibility behavior of the Secondary Side Bar (visible in workspaces, hidden in empty windows) and points readers to the relevant setting.

Changes:

  • Add a note explaining the default Secondary Side Bar visibility in folders/workspaces versus empty windows.
  • Reword the “show Secondary Side Bar” instruction to account for it potentially being hidden.
  • Remove a later, now-redundant sentence about configuring default visibility.

Karl Horky (@karlhorky) Thanks for updating the docs. Agree that the Copilot suggestion would make it worse.
