vscode hangs: "the upstream ref origin/master for branch master is not a github repo" #8729

Description

Unfortunately this is a sporadic error, so I can't provide any exact steps to reproduce.
But it is very drastic: vscode hangs, showing only a spinner. It is not possible to do anything with any vscode window anymore. All are unresponsive.

After this happens I can only close vscode via the task manager (system activity).

It happens while developing and debug starting an extension. When the new vscode window opens it can happen that it get stalled.
This happens with several of my extensions, so it is not related to one certain extension of mine.

The last thing I could see in the vscode window is this:

(I pasted as screenshot, as I could not copy the text)

No idea if this is of any relevance, anyhow, in this case here there is no github repo inside the (debug) opened window, the workspace.
But the parent folder contains a git repo.
