Copilot Chat "Ask" mode cannot be opened in a new window (drag/drop does not work) #267528

Description

@zafersn

Hi team,

I’m not entirely sure if this is a bug or just a missing feature, but I wanted to raise it.

Currently, the Copilot Chat panel can only be opened inside the VS Code window (as a sidebar or panel). What I’d like to do is open the Copilot Chat Ask mode in a completely separate, dedicated window so I can move it to another screen/monitor.

This would be especially helpful when working on a smaller screen or when I want to keep the chat visible while coding without sacrificing editor space. Right now, drag-and-drop doesn’t allow me to detach the chat into its own window.

Steps to reproduce:

Open Copilot Chat in VS Code.

Try to drag the panel out into a separate window.

Notice that it cannot be detached.

Expected behavior:
Ability to open Copilot Chat (Ask mode) in a new, standalone window that can be freely moved to another screen.

Actual behavior:
The chat remains locked inside the current VS Code window as a sidebar/panel.

Environment:

  • Copilot Chat Extension Version:1.372.0
  • VS Code Version:
Version: 1.104.1 (user setup)
