In 5.6 is Pipe metadata being replaced by D-Bus / MPRIS metadata? #2316
|
Hi, I noticed in the development relnotes that pipe metadata may be discontinued and replaced with dbus or mpris metadata. Here is the note. I'm not sure I interpreted it correctly, but if true then is there a guide for how to obtain metadata and cover urls from dbus or mpris? |

Mostly yes, in AirPlay 2 mode. The pipe itself isn't going away, but its contents change. With So you have three options:

Thanks. I'm still a bit confused.
I'm trying to figure out whether bumping to 5.6 will break our metadata feature. |

Hi @moodeaudio and @hippi345, and thanks for the posts. Let me see if I can straighten this out a bit:
For ongoing backward compatibility, we could easily make Shairport Sync push a subset of the NPI onto the metadata pipe if you think it might be desirable. Specifically we can push these into the metadata pipe:
Would this be useful to you? |

I think it might if I understand the changes correctly. Our current process fetches metadata from the pipe as follows: The aplmeta.py utility (in the line above) runs a forever loop that accumulates metadata key/value pairs from the reader and sends a bundle to the WebUI for display. Below are the reader keys that are used. shairport-sync.conf |

Yeah, it looks like it would do the business alright. Are you picking up the artwork from that |

Hi Mike, Tests with 5.7-dev-23 and nqptp 1.2.9 suggest the pipe metadata may be incomplete.
This debug comparison of aplmeta.py shows the differences between 5.7 and 5.5.2 5.7-dev-23 5.5.2 Sending to webUI Key/value pairs processed by aplmeta.py Program versions |

Thanks for the check, Tim. We can certainly add the metadata bundle start and end. We'll have to track down the others: Play Session|Begin |

Hello again. I just ran the latest AirPlay 2 operation[connect here, from Apple Music an iPhone, with a track selected but not playing...] [play] [plist stuff] [plist stuff] [plist stuff] [pause] [disconnect] Classic AirPlay[connect here, from Apple Music an iPhone, with a track selected but not playing...] [play] [stop] So, it appears that all the metadata is there except for the track length, metadata bundle start and end. Or am I missing something? |

Thanks for the update, Tim. It is mystifying! Attached is a log from the first few tracks on Apple Music's "Everyday Hits"... A couple of little things: Shairport Sync is 5.7-dev-24-g380e6b1b. We'll put in the metadata bundle markers and the track length information very shortly. The metadata reader is the latest, updated September 3. The I can't imagine it makes any difference, but the |

Excellent! Thanks for testing!
