Usability:
- take a look at default shortcuts in SDL version (I use only CTRL+ALT+A and CTRL+U)
To check:
- NOVA / SDL screen setup routines
- mix sound / send MIDI / draw cursor in VBL? => no lag even with I/O
- check percentage filled of screen in addDirtyRects
- automatically detect when to copy fullscreen data without middle buffer?
- fullscreen blits with SuperBlitter for single/triple-buffering (perhaps also remove direct&single at least for SV because of that)
- dsp mixer (not so easy, inputBuffer.read() in mixer already needs to use the DSP...)
Profiling:
- how to profile: https://www.atari-forum.com/viewtopic.php?p=443946#p443946
- MI3: try using Common::wrapBufferedWriteStream and disabling stdio buffering
- HE games have "save ini files" called too often: https://www.atari-forum.com/viewtopic.php?p=462158#p462158
- create some simple profiler for one frame (perhaps in the frame limiter class) + rewrite at least some engines with
OSystem::delayMillis(10)into that (but see https://discord.com/channels/581224060529148060/735979767643504654/1384472728089661490 about frame limiter) - check how many times SV blits vs Move16 blits vs normal blits are used
Research:
- AGI, Kyra, SCI and SCUMM engines all have separate implementations of PCjr/SN76489 which translates very well to the YM (https://www.atari-forum.com/viewtopic.php?p=442039#p442039)
- check atari st (4bpp) and amiga (5/6bpp) games whether they can be handled with a faster c2p?
Possible but unlikely:
- don't hardcode some of the buffers for cacheing purposes, determine the size based on amount of free RAM
- quarter resolution for hicolor + hires games; maybe mono output?
- similarly, 640x480 games in 320x240? (special c2p required)
- external player support https://www.atari-forum.com/viewtopic.php?p=449019#p449019
Other:
- Playable games: https://www.atari-forum.com/viewtopic.php?p=462012#p462012
- Update the official docs: https://github.com/scummvm/scummvm/blob/master/doc/docportal/other_platforms/atari.rst (maybe move readme.txt there?)
