How To Create Colr V1 Masterless Variable Font

Step 1: Create a .fontra project

Step 2: Draw Basic contour

  • You can use a drawing as background image and trace on that.
  • Use pen tool or shape tool to draw

Step 3: Add Color Palette(s)

Step 4: Add Color V1 Layers to glyphs

Step 5: Add Variation Axis

  • Go to Font -> Axes

  • Click on New axis... Button

  • Add details 0f Axis, name, tag, UI name, range for the axis and press Add new axis button

Entering Axis Details

  • For masterless variations of Colr V1, no need to add additional sources as the contour does not chage with changing of axis, only color paint variaes.

Step 6: Add KeyFrame Layers

  • Select the glyph whose colr v1 paint is to be modified

  • Select Designspace Navigation tab in the left

  • Move the Font axes slider to the desired KeyFrame Location for the axis

  • Under Glyph sources click on the "+" button to add a Source in the corrosponding axis position.

  • Click on the Paint Tool and modify paint in the layer

  • Repeat this for all glyphs

Step 7: Export Font

  • Go to File -> Export As and select either TrueType (*.ttf) or Webfont(*.woff2) as font type

Export as

  • Type the name of the font and click Save

Save Font

  • The Font is exported and ready to use. Colr Pak will convert each layer into ColrV1 Varstore entry creating Masterless Variation of color layers.
