1.4.0-beta.6

A garden look for the map, a sunny design and guides that explain more. Nothing new in the container this time, updating it only brings the app inside it up to date. Feedback welcome.

New:

  • a garden style for the map (the gear on the map, Map style): drawn from above like the guides, the lawn in stripes along each area's mowing direction that turn with its angle, an area not mowed as meadow, the paving around it see-through
  • ways and obstacles in the garden style as one of 52 pictures: trees, hedges, beds, pond, pool, trampoline, table, parasol, house, paving and more. Picked under the map with the area picked, without one the name decides (Pool, Tree, Table ...)
  • a new design, Sunny: a summer sky over a meadow, between light and dark. In the settings under Display
  • the guides explain more: editing the map in 11 steps (area types, active and don't mow, mow angle, mowing order, real edges, saving and backups), recording with ways, the spot in front of the dock and tips
  • the weather at the top right of every tab
  • the mower sizes in the settings under Your mower, set once. Sizes that are exactly a listed model's take its measured outline by themselves
  • the mowing values in one place with the map: Mowing for all areas, or the planner's menu
  • real edges: the strip between a line and its real edge is green like the lawn
  • every release comes with MowBite-web.zip, the web app's files for a web server of your own

Changed:

  • switches and choices in the push message settings save right away
  • saving the map only warns while the mower is busy (mowing, docking, recording)
  • clearer names: outline offset, safety distances, overlapping outline passes, required GPS accuracy
  • the coverage switch on the map is bigger, on the editor's map it's for looking only
  • merging areas copes with outlines that nearly touch, a page that fails shows a message instead of going blank
  • everything that folds starts folded, the settings have no back button any more

1.4.0-beta.5

Guides with moving pictures, a tidier dashboard and recording that closes the outline by itself. Nothing new in the container this time, updating it only brings the app inside it up to date. Feedback welcome.

New:

  • guides step by step with moving pictures: recording the map (dock, outline, obstacles, what a map is made of) and editing it (moving and adding points, split, merge, reduce points), the editing one plays on the app's own map. In the settings under App, on the Record page and under the map. Without a map yet the dashboard points there
  • recording closes the outline or obstacle by itself once the mower is back at the start after going round (after 3 s, like stop). "Keep recording" holds it off, a switch on the page turns it off
  • the weather at the top right of the dashboard: now, today's highest and lowest and rain now or coming. Today's card shows the last three runs instead, "show more" three more
  • mowing hours and maintenance on the Activity page fold away and open by themselves when something is due, the dashboard says so too
  • a small switch at the top of the map for the coverage (wifi, off, gps) instead of the choice in the layer menu
  • MowBite Planner: the outline passes can go round at random, anew after every finished mow (with the next planner update). The planner menu is tidied up: a style sets the turning settings at once, one safety distance for edge and obstacles, the rest under more settings

Changed:

  • the dashboard's values as even chips in two columns, the buttons' icons in one line
  • settings: an open group is one card with its parts inside
  • english names for the temperatures: Mow ESC, Left ESC, Right ESC

1.4.0-beta.4

Mowing hours and maintenance, the mower's wifi and mowing by hand while recording. Update the container too, hours, maintenance and wifi need it (the app shows the command). Feedback welcome.

New:

  • mowing hours on the Activity page: how long the blade turned, how far the mower drove with and without it and how often it went out, for the week, month, year and in total. Counting starts with the new container, older runs aren't in it
  • maintenance by blade hours: blades every 80 h, cleaning every 200 h, both can be changed. When one is due a push message comes once. If you saved your push settings before, tick "Maintenance due" there
  • the mower's wifi signal on the dashboard, its network on the system page and the wifi in the 24 h history (the container on the mower, with '- /proc/1/net:/host-net:ro' under volumes in compose.yaml like for the coverage)
  • mowing by hand while recording: blade on and off next to the stick. It goes off when you leave the page or the app or on an emergency stop, but keeps turning while the mower stands and when the connection drops
  • mowing the leftovers of the last mow (MowBite Planner): the map shows that mow faded under the trail, with its cut in the cut width, so what's left shows as gaps. The progress goes along the leftover passes, the ones still to drive dashed
  • when mower_logic sends nothing while the rest of OpenMower answers, the dashboard says so and what to look at on the mower (with the MowBite Planner first: is its container running)

Changed:

  • the app icon is a bit bigger on the home screen
  • without the MowBite Planner the map menu leaves out the layers only the planner fills
  • push on the phone: a note says how to hide the lasting notification of ntfy, the messages still come

@github-actions github-actions released this 16 Oct 01:48

1.4.0-beta.3

Push messages on the phone as MowBite's own, the settings sorted into groups and lots of small things all over the app. Update the container too, the app tells you when it's too old for something. Feedback welcome.

New:

  • push messages on the phone with MowBite's icon (Android app): install the ntfy app once, no need to open it or subscribe to anything, then switch them on under Settings > Push messages. Sorted into problems, reminders and info, problems and reminders ring and vibrate, info stays quiet. A tap opens the page on its mower, snooze right on the message. The mower has to get on the internet for it
  • the app tells you when MowBite on the mower is too old for something in it, with the command to update (it clears away the old image too)
  • new design Aurora, from violet to petrol (Settings > Appearance)
  • diagnosis file: the map as the run left the dock and the plan of each area, where a problem was against the plan and how well the plan was followed, mow motor, battery and drive ESCs around a problem. Stops close together count as one problem
  • mower sizes: the SABO MOWiT 500F / John Deere Tango E5 as measured by its owner, and every model brings its turn radius

Changed:

  • settings in folding groups that say what's inside, texts checked all over the app
  • the mower glides smoothly over the map, map and editor don't redraw for every pose
  • less data on slow links: events of past days only once, the sensors' 24 h only on their page, older tracks only with an area picked, the web files gzipped
  • with the coverage layer on, areas can still be picked and edited
  • GPS: OpenMower only passes on RTK fixed positions, so an accuracy that repeats while driving counts as no GPS. 'over 5 cm' and 'no GPS' are told apart
  • planner menus: the plan comes from the planner itself (planner.plan), the progress says when a run drives the leftover passes, leftovers by the container keep the time zone and place for 'not in the dark'
  • the container writes less (idle off the dock once a minute, today's planner log capped)

Fixes:

  • back from the background the app connects again right away and no command gets lost
  • 'sent home' instead of 'paused by you', 'undocking failed' without GPS, the texts on inactive obstacles
  • planner menus: sizes and settings aren't overwritten by an older answer, plans don't stall, leftovers again after an error
  • the demo keeps its settings away from your mower's

@github-actions github-actions released this 14 Oct 18:29

1.4.0-beta.2

Small one, mostly the diagnosis file after the first real files from beta.1. Feedback welcome.

New and changed:

  • diagnosis file: where a problem was on the map (area and distance to its edge), from the dock only while docking, and whether the position came from GPS or only from the wheels
  • diagnosis file: one bump is one emergency stop, a short stop without latch (e.g. TIMEOUT_HIGH_LEVEL) and a bump right before docking are notes, not problems
  • diagnosis file: GPS is told by its accuracy (at most 5 cm), OpenMower passes no fix flag. an accuracy that freezes in the dock approach doesn't count as good
  • diagnosis file: the charging contacts (voltage and current) around every problem, and the settings as the run left the dock
  • the container keeps the planner's log (14 days, at most 5 MB), so it's in the diagnosis file also after the planner restarted
  • progress while mowing asks the mower for the plan once instead of on every page

1.4.0-beta.1

MowBite and the planner app are one app now. The planner menus only show up when the MowBite Planner runs on the mower, without it everything works like before. Feedback welcome.

Some things need a newer OpenMower (edge from 8 Oct 2026 or later). MowBite asks the mower what it can do and leaves out what yours doesn't have yet.

New:

  • MowBite Planner menus (only with the planner on the mower, https://github.com/mkaaaaaay/mowbite-planner): settings for all areas and per area, the mower's sizes, its plan on the map with the collision check, and mowing the leftovers of the last run. The planner is in an early stage. Pick your mower model under Map > Mower sizes, without it there's no collision check
  • diagnosis file: every run in Activity has a button for one text file with everything about it: problems, GPS and Wi-Fi, the charging contacts, events, ROS and planner log by time, the settings at the start and the raw data. Post it when something goes wrong
  • GPS and Wi-Fi coverage on the map (layers > Coverage): half metre squares, green to red, tap one for its numbers. Fills up while the mower mows. Wi-Fi needs '- /proc/1/net:/host-net:ro' under volumes in compose.yaml
  • under a problem in Activity: how the GPS was the minute before, and the GPS log around it. Problems are folded to one line
  • OpenMower's own settings in the app (lanes and outline passes, rain and automatic mode, GPS, docking, mow motor), MowBite sets them again after OpenMower restarts. Needs params.set (edge)
  • a start time in the schedule can have its own mowing direction
  • demo mower on the first screen, to look around without a mower
  • privacy policy linked in the settings

MowBite 1.3.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 08 Oct 18:23

MowBite 1.3.0, thanks to everyone who tested the betas and gave feedback in the Discord thread!

Some things need a newer OpenMower (edge from 30.9. or later). MowBite asks the mower what it can do and leaves out what yours doesn't have yet, settings > updates says what a newer OpenMower would bring.

Dashboard:

  • the real mowing plan from the mower with progress, percent and time left
  • skip area and skip the path it's on, each with a few seconds to take it back
  • continue while paused, drop an interrupted job so the next start begins with the first area
  • emergency stop says why (bumper, lifted, stop button, ...), needs an xcore board
  • gps says rtk fix, float or too inaccurate, all four temperatures each with their own limit
  • show more under the last run, and starts the schedule left out with the reason

Map:

  • mower sizes: pick your mower and the map draws its real outline, its blade and the strip it really cut. measured from photos: YardForce NX60 / NX80 / NX100, Classic 500B, John Deere Tango E5 / SABO MOWiT 500F
  • new icons drawn from photos, YardForce and Tango station, an NX60 Punisher with its station
  • the last run's track stays until the next run starts, also after a reload or on another phone, older runs from the mower's own recording
  • smooth following and zooming, also on phones

Map editor:

  • preview of the real plan while editing, plan length and time, area size in m²
  • don't mow areas (mowable: false), driven on but not mowed, optionally mowed around
  • mow angle over the whole turn with a compass, on a phone right on the map, undo and save on the map
  • split can cut out a shape drawn inside an area, merging works with outlines that cross themselves
  • lists what the mower can't work with and marks it on the map, warns when the map on the mower changed meanwhile

Push messages:

  • through ntfy when the mower needs you: emergency stop, docking or undocking given up, navigation error, mow motor didn't start, optionally done, rain and battery. reminders and snooze right from the message, sent by the container so no app has to be open

Schedule:

  • end time per start time, home at sunset, start from the first area, pause for today or until a day, a hedgehog note for starts in the dark

Activity and sensors:

  • why the mower went home, the reasons of problems and the ros log next to them (kept 14 days), messages newest first, filter all / problems / progress
  • system tab (memory, storage, cpu temperature), battery over the weeks with charging time and volts per hour of mowing

Design:

  • frosted glass is the default now, a design picked before stays. new light design, seasons in the grass at the bottom

Home Assistant:

Update: docker compose pull && docker compose up -d in your mowbite folder (image tag latest or 1.3.0)

@github-actions github-actions released this 05 Oct 19:20

Small hotfix for beta.3: the map stuttered while moving or zooming it, mostly with frosted glass (now the default design) and with the cut strip of the last run.

Fixed:

  • moving and zooming the map is smooth again: the track, the plan and the cut strip aren't built again for every frame, the cut strip is drawn in a few paths instead of hundreds, the buttons on the map don't blur the map under them any more and the grass and leaves wait while the map moves

Third beta, most of it from your feedback in the Discord thread, thanks! Feedback welcome.

Like before, some things need a newer OpenMower (edge from 30.9. or later). MowBite asks the mower what it can do and leaves out what yours doesn't have yet.

New:

  • push messages through ntfy when the mower needs you: emergency stop, docking or undocking given up, a navigation error, the mow motor not starting, optionally done, rain and battery. reminders while it can't get on by itself, snooze in the app or right from the message. the container on the mower sends them, so they come without the app open (settings > your mower)
  • emergency stop: says why it's on (bumper, lifted, stop button, ...) under the red message on the dashboard and on the sensors page, the activity names an emergency's reason instead of a code. needs an xcore board and the newer OpenMower
  • mower sizes in the settings, optional: the map draws the mower's outline with its blade, along the track the strip the blade really cut, and the real edges (the recorded outlines are the middle of the mower). the NX60, NX80 and NX100 can be picked from a list. yard force classic 500, sa650 and nx100 icons from above, the yard force station at its real size, each a layer of its own
  • map: the last run's track stays until the next run starts, also after a reload or on another phone
  • map page shows the plan and how far it got while mowing, like the dashboard
  • activity: the messages in a run are newest first like the runs, it says why the mower went home (battery, rain, too hot) and when the blade didn't start
  • dashboard: all four temperatures with their names, each warns at its own limit
  • mow motor: an arrow and a spinning blade show which way it turns
  • frosted glass is the default design now, a design picked before stays
  • settings in folding groups, icons, map colors and aerial imagery in a panel behind the gear on the map
  • map editor on a phone: the mowing settings fold away under the map, the angle is turned on the map, undo and save sit on the map. a finger rests on a point a moment to pick it up, moving right away pans the map
  • map editor: delete a point with the button next to it or the del key, undo for a few seconds

Fixed:

  • pause looked like stop
  • a mow motor turning the other way round (randomize_mow_motor_direction) showed red, and the battery history missed its blade time
  • areas whose recorded outline crosses itself wouldn't merge ("they don't touch")
  • sending the mower home in the middle of a path showed a navigation error, OpenMower reports one with it
  • the map redrew the whole page for gps wobble in the dock and every sensor value

@github-actions github-actions released this 01 Oct 21:52

Second beta, mostly fixes from testing beta.1 plus a few new things. Feedback welcome.

Like in beta.1, some things need a newer OpenMower (edge from 30.9. or later). MowBite asks the mower what it can do, settings > updates now says what a newer OpenMower would bring for yours.

New:

  • dashboard: a start the schedule left out (rain, battery, mower not reachable, ...) shows up under today with the reason
  • dashboard: gps says rtk fix, float or too inaccurate, measured against max_position_accuracy of the mower. also on the sensors page
  • dashboard: skip area waits 4 s, a second tap takes it back
  • map editor: lists what the mower can't work with (an outline crossing itself, the point in front of the dock off the drivable areas, an obstacle outside them) and marks it on the map
  • map editor: warns when the map on the mower changed while you were editing, both can be put together area by area. unsaved edits stay when you switch pages
  • map editor: mow angle over the whole turn with a little compass, the help says which way 0, 90, 180 and 270 go
  • map editor: mow around a don't mow area (needs the newer OpenMower)
  • new design "frosted glass" in the settings, dark with milky cards
  • the grass at the bottom has seasons: leaves in autumn, snow in winter, by the half of the world the mower is in. and a few things to find
  • android app: map downloads work (share sheet), a short vibration when you pick up a point

Fixed:

  • a start or go home tapped while the connection was gone could go out minutes later after a reconnect. the dashboard also says when the mower's state is out of date
  • after a slow start the newer features could stay off until a reload
  • two devices saving the settings could undo each other's change
  • schedule: a start waiting for the battery could start after its end time, and an earlier run's end time and area skipping carried on into the next start. going home at the end time is to the second now
  • schedule log says when the mower didn't react to a start
  • battery over the weeks read some values wrong
  • the dock may lie outside the areas, only the point in front of it has to be inside
  • merging, splitting and cutting out areas keeps their id, so schedules and pauses still find them
  • no mowing plan for inactive areas
  • tool width and other defaults were missing when the mower sent its param list too early
  • errors from the container came back as ok
  • activity: the messages between runs sit in a card of their own
