Hi, I’m Kai. I am interested in unusual or novel NN architectures, parameter-efficient and compute-efficient deep learning, and applying ML to tasks that would be impossible without it. I want to be part of a team where I can learn from people smarter than me while making the world a better place.

- Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Machine learning research. (2021/10 – 2025/10)
Wrangled very large medical image datasets. Trained dozens of deep neural networks. Worked with clinicians to run experiments and publish papers. Built and maintained custom on-prem Linux GPU servers and a 350TB TrueNAS storage server. Oriented new hires and helped them get used to our tooling, data, and processes.
- Trailfort. Product visualization. (2019)
Created 3D product visualizations and promotional animations using Blender.
- Vision-language foundation model for echocardiogram interpretation (2024)
First author. Published in Nature Medicine.
- Deep learning based electrocardiographic screening for chronic kidney disease (2022)
Co-first author. Published in Communications Medicine.
- Machine learning. PyTorch, Numpy, Pandas, WandB, Matplotlib, SQL.
- Blender. Modeling, shading, tracking, compositing, Python API.
- Programming on Linux. Ubuntu, Docker, Bash, Git/Github.
- The arts. Music, portraiture, filmmaking (including VFX), and creative writing.
- Painterbot. (2023/10) Artistic algorithmic image reconstruction with PyTorch.
- Spectracles. **(2024)**Complex-valued pixel-level image transformer that replaces standard attention with the FFT. Promising performance at small parameter counts, but I unfortunately could never get it to scale properly to larger model sizes.
- 100 Days of Chalk Art. Long-term public performance art. (2020/03 - 2020/07)
- No More Greenscreen. (2021/01 - 2021/10) Deep video matting paper reproduction. My first real ML project. I didn’t succeed, but I won the Pioneer tournament working on it.
In 2020 I graduated from Lincoln High School (Lincoln, CA). I have not attended college. All skills listed in this resume are self-taught. I really enjoy learning new things.
