Hello, I'm a new user trying to sign into my Minecraft account on the app.

I have tried this on 0.10.3 and 0.7.1

On 0.10.3, I get the error pictured below.

On 0.7.1, I get "Minecraft authentication error: Failed to deserialize response to JSON during step MinecraftProfile: missing field name at line 5 column 1".

I have followed all support page troubleshooting and messenger recommendations. I am using Cloudflare WARP. I've been using this account for over a decade on multiple launchers. My system clock is synced.

Support email from Emma recommended that I leave an issue here. Please let me know if there are other logs I can get to help. Other users on the Discord have started to recently report this same error.

This issue isn't new, but the error message has changed in recent updates due to internal refactors on how player profiles are fetched.

In your logs, you'll see the same error reported in this GitHub issue, Failed to deserialize response to JSON during step MinecraftProfile: missing field name at line 5 column 1.

As noted in the comments on that issue, this is typically a transient error caused by problems with the Minecraft authentication servers, network instability, or even certain user errors.

Have you tried:

• Disabling Cloudflare WARP?
• Double-checking that you're logging in with the correct Microsoft account?
• Removing and re-adding your Minecraft account to the Minecraft App after a few days?

Also, we should keep in mind that version 0.7.1 is over a year old at this point, and some sort of obscure issue when migrating Minecraft account data to the storage format used by newer versions may have occurred. In general, we don't routinely test data migrations that go so far back when releasing new app versions, so if you value them being reliable, it is good advice to keep your app more up to date. We also don't support downgrading the app in-place, as the app lacks any logic to downgrade the data storage format used to match what the running version expects.

Hi thanks for the information. The 0.7.1 rollback was a seperate install to try and get an error log the auto support tool could recognize.

I tried the steps you mentioned except "Removing and re-adding your Minecraft account to the Minecraft App after a few days". Do you mean just, log out of the launcher and try Modrinth in like 2 days? I'll do that next and report back.

Yeah, I meant that. Though since you've opened this issue, a few days have already passed, so I don't think it's necessary to wait more days to see if it was just a fluke.

It's worth noting that this Microsoft account is one I migrated my old Mojang account to. And I am unfamiliar with these profiles. Is there another way (other than simply signing in to the official launcher and playing) to verify that there is a Minecraft profile to find? I can't see anywhere on xbox.com that shows proof that I own Minecraft.

Also forgot to mention that I've successfully signed in with other third-party launchers.

You could check out https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/msaprofile/mygames. If you don't see an option to buy Minecraft: Java Edition or Bedrock, that's proof you have them linked to your profile.

Assuming that you've retried logging in with the Modrinth App and the problem persists, I'm not sure what may be going wrong here with your login process, however. Ideally we'd look at the login flow requests sent by different clients side by side to spot any relevant differences, but such requests exchange confidential tokens, and if this all sounds pretty complicated for you to do then it's probably not worth to pursue.

Welp, it shows me as not owning Bedrock nor Java despite playing both online fine and using 3rd party tools for both. Confirms that this isn't a Modrinth App bug at least. I guess this can be closed.

I'd be willing to give up privacy but I'm unfamiliar with how to log or share that information.

I think the /mygames link would be a good inclusion for the support page on "are you using the correct account?" because just logging in on the official app yielded a false positive in my case.

I will use Minecraft support or just buy a new account. Thanks for the quick responses!

Fixed to me when I create an minecraft account on java edition, (I only had it on Bedrock). Idk If thats it, but after that i login successfully.

I believe we should keep this issue open until we can better understand the specific differences in the login flow that cause different clients to interpret Minecraft: Java Edition ownership inconsistently for some players, especially those who have migrated accounts or have only linked their accounts to Bedrock Edition, based on your experiences. Once we've clarified that, we can more confidently assess how feasible it is to improve how the Modrinth App handles this situation, and then close the issue with an informed conclusion.

I'll try to look into what we can do on our end to explore this further. According to the Minecraft Wiki, "Xbox Game Pass users don't technically own the game, and therefore will not show any ownership [here], but will indeed have a Minecraft profile attached to their account". Since the Modrinth App checks for game ownership, we might be missing some Xbox Game Pass users as a result... But that wiki article documents other endpoint for this that doesn't match what we're using, which is supposedly what the vanilla launcher does... But the vanilla launcher clearly does something different for you guys as otherwise you wouldn't be able to login there. Honestly, the authentication API is a bit of a poorly documented mess when it comes to edge cases like this.

Just adding onto this. The fix seems to be launching the default Minecraft launcher and launching the game at least once to ensure the profile is fully created. It seems that buying the game doesn't necessarily make the entire game profile, hence Modrinth App can't fetch it.
