MacParakeet 0.8.7

Sorry — 0.8.6 broke hold-to-talk (human error). But not for long — here's 0.8.7. Hold-to-talk is restored.

Caps Lock no longer blocks Fn. The Undo pill is tighter; push-to-talk keeps the width it already had.

Skip the microphone if you only transcribe files. Keep AI Formatter off until you want it. Optionally type finished dictation at the caret. Connect Moonshot, DeepSeek, Qwen, Z.AI, or MiniMax. On Sonoma, long Parakeet jobs stay off the Neural Engine.

Paste is still the default dictation insert. Voice profiles, encrypted share links, and in-process MLX stay off.

What’s new

  • Hold-to-talk works again. Hold Fn (or your PTT shortcut) starts capture when the mic is already granted. The first-time system permission sheet still waits for the next hold. #1096 #1097
  • Fn works with Caps Lock on. A latched Caps Lock no longer looks like another key still held down. #1099
  • Overlay spacing. Hands-free cancel/stop and the Undo pill sit tighter in the capsule. Hold-to-talk keeps the wider pill. #1098

  • File-only first run. Continue without a microphone if you only drop files or paste links. Dictation still asks before you speak. #1070
  • AI Formatter stays off until you turn it on. New installs leave both transcript and dictation formatting off. Each surface has its own prompt. If you already enabled formatter for transcripts, that stays on. #1093
  • Streaming cursor, optional. Settings → Dictation. Finished text types at the caret with a short motion. Reduce Motion, some input methods, and text with returns still paste. Off by default; one paste remains one Undo. #1092
  • More AI providers. Moonshot (Kimi), DeepSeek, Qwen, Z.AI, and MiniMax sit next to OpenAI, Anthropic, and Gemini. Your key, your account. #1087
  • Safer Sonoma speech. On macOS 14, Parakeet’s encoder stays off the Neural Engine so long files are less likely to crash. #1089
  • CLI 4.4.0. Homebrew macparakeet-cli uses the same AI provider settings as the app. Rename and favorite from the CLI. Speaker rename/assign/merge. China-lab --provider aliases.

Install

Download MacParakeet.dmg, open it, and drag MacParakeet to Applications. Existing users can also choose Check for Updates... in MacParakeet.

MacParakeet requires Apple Silicon and macOS 14.2 or later.
