v0.3.0 — Expo SDK 57 + Expo's skills

Choose a tag to compare

@johnckealy johnckealy released this 19 Oct 15:06

Expo SDK 57 — React Native 0.86.3, React 19.2.3 unchanged. expo ~57.0.30 and every expo-* package via expo install --fix (expo-font, expo-image and expo-status-bar are now listed as config plugins); expo-doctor 21/21, typecheck, lint, web export and a clean prebuild pass. A new development build is needed.

Expo's official Claude Code skills now ship in .claude/skills/ — 22 of them, loaded with no install step — replacing the setting that enabled Expo's Claude Code plugin, which also brought the Expo MCP server and telemetry. Neither is used now.

v0.2.0 — expo-notifications (local)

Choose a tag to compare

@johnckealy johnckealy released this 23 Jul 07:29

Adds expo-notifications (package + config plugin) for on-device scheduled/local notifications. Remote push is not set up in this template.

v0.1.4

Choose a tag to compare

@johnckealy johnckealy released this 13 Jul 12:03

What's changed

  • Apple export compliance is now automatic. app.json declares ITSAppUsesNonExemptEncryption: false — the app only uses standard OS crypto (HTTPS/TLS), so Apple skips the export-compliance question on every TestFlight / App Store upload.
  • New release EAS profile. Builds an internal-distribution .apk (eas build --platform android --profile release) — a real, installable Android build you can hand around directly, for the free path's finale. production still produces the Play-Store .aab.
  • A richer home screen for restyling. Added a Card primitive and a labelled "Design preview" section (Card, Input, Button variants, semantic text colors) so the academy's design-system lesson has something visible to land on. The home screen scrolls now to fit smaller phones.
  • Fixed a Reanimated transform warning on the home-screen logo — the entering animation and the infinite float were both writing transform; split across nested views.
  • Docs say "app"/"app code", never "template". README/CLAUDE.md ship into every student's project, so they no longer leak course internals.

App version remains 0.0.1, as always — students start fresh.

v0.1.3

Choose a tag to compare

@johnckealy johnckealy released this 04 Jul 17:37

What's changed

  • Fresh checkouts now pass npm run typecheck. A committed src/css.d.ts provides the CSS module declaration that the gitignored, generated expo-env.d.ts used to be the only source of — release zips no longer fail with TS2882 on the @/global.css import.
  • Explicit bundle-identifier placeholders. app.json now ships ios.bundleIdentifier and android.package as com.changeme.changeme, so the change-?me rename sweep catches the full app identity.
  • Clearer rename instructions in README/CLAUDE.md: all five identity fields plus the package.json name, and the versioning rule spelled out (version stays 0.0.1 — that's where every new app starts).

App version remains 0.0.1, as always — students start fresh.

v0.1.2 — EAS CLI docs fixes

Choose a tag to compare

@johnckealy johnckealy released this 03 Jul 22:26

Documentation fixes for the EAS CLI workflow:

  • Correct the EAS CLI invocation in the docs: the package is eas-cli, so npx eas does not work
  • Recommend installing the CLI globally (npm install -g eas-cli) instead of invoking it via npx

v0.1.1 — development-build workflow

Choose a tag to compare

@johnckealy johnckealy released this 03 Jul 22:17

Template release. (The in-repo version fields intentionally stay at 0.0.1 — students version their own apps.)

Highlights

  • Development builds, not Expo Go — expo-dev-client is installed, eas.json ships development and production profiles, and npm run ios / npm run android compile the native app via expo run:*. Expo Go is unsupported (the store app lags behind SDK 56, and native modules are pre-installed).
  • change-me naming convention — app.json ships with placeholder name/slug; renaming the app is the documented first task, enforced via CLAUDE.md.
  • Shared Screen scaffold — safe areas, tab-bar clearance, and wide-screen max width in one component; both screens rebuilt on it.
  • Theme consistency — new onDanger token (no more inline #fff), resolveIsDark as the single scheme resolver, TopTabInset for the web tab bar, Text color prop now maps 1:1 to theme tokens.
  • No wrong-theme flash — the splash screen holds until the persisted theme mode rehydrates.
  • Single logo asset — one 1024×1024 opaque logo.png drives the app icon, adaptive icon, and in-app logo.
  • Barrel convention — each folder's index.ts is its public API; all imports unified.
  • Docs (README + CLAUDE.md) rewritten for the dev-build + EAS workflow.

v0.1.0

Choose a tag to compare

@johnckealy johnckealy released this 03 Jul 21:31

Initial release of the Kealy Studio free-tier React Native template for the App Dev with AI course.

  • Expo SDK 56 (React Native 0.85, React 19.2.3), expo-router with typed routes, TypeScript strict mode
  • Design-token theme system with persisted light/dark/system mode (Zustand + AsyncStorage)
  • UI primitives (Button, Input, Text), error boundaries, and a Settings screen
  • Common device capabilities pre-installed and permission-configured (camera, image picker, media library, location, haptics, video, SVG, gradients, blur, clipboard, sharing, file system, WebView)
  • Runs entirely in Expo Go — no native build or backend required

Note: the app version inside the template starts at 0.0.1 — release tags track the template itself.
