Donkey Kong Country 3 Recomp 0.1.5

Choose a tag to compare

@mpolizel mpolizel released this 03 Nov 14:19

Donkey Kong Country 3 Recomp 0.1.5: lighter default and dedicated graphics card on laptops. Setup pack: no ROM or game data is included.

Changed

  • A fresh install starts with no shader (the plain picture), the lightest option. A full-screen CRT shader made the game drop frames on weaker laptops. Pick CRT Lottes or another preset under Settings → Shader; your choice is saved and kept. An install that already has a shader keeps it. If the game runs slowly, choose None.
  • On laptops with two graphics cards (NVIDIA Optimus, AMD switchable graphics), the game now asks for the dedicated graphics card instead of the integrated one. If it still runs slowly, set the game's executable to High performance in Windows Settings → System → Display → Graphics.

Updating from 0.1.4: accept the update offer when the game starts, then press Generate & rebuild. Saves, save states and settings are kept (checked for this release: those made in 0.1.4 survive the update and load in 0.1.5).

Donkey Kong Country 3 Recomp 0.1.4

Choose a tag to compare

@mpolizel mpolizel released this 03 Nov 12:20

Donkey Kong Country 3 Recomp 0.1.4: preventive fix for a black screen after saving. Setup pack: no ROM or game data is included.

Fixed

  • Donkey Kong Country could stay on a black screen after saving at Candy's, with the sound still playing. This game runs on the same engine and gets the same fix, so saving at Wrinkly's Save Cave cannot freeze for that reason. Gameplay is otherwise unchanged: with the same input, the game's memory matches 0.1.3 frame for frame.

Updating from 0.1.3: accept the update offer when the game starts, then press Generate & rebuild. In-game saves, save states and settings are kept, and a copy of your saves is made in save-backups before installing. Checked for this release: a save and a save state made in 0.1.3 survive the update and load in 0.1.4.

Donkey Kong Country 3 Recomp 0.1.3

Choose a tag to compare

@mpolizel mpolizel released this 02 Nov 19:43

Donkey Kong Country 3 Recomp 0.1.3: CRT Lottes by default, settings during play, audio interpolation, new upscalers, and saves that are never lost on update. Setup pack: no ROM or game data is included; same first-run steps as before (see the README).

New

  • Settings during play: Ctrl+L (or Select+L3 on a controller) reopens the
    launcher. Shader, window scale, volume and controls apply when you press
    Resume, without restarting the game.
  • Audio interpolation: press I to cycle Gaussian (the console's own,
    default), Cubic (crisper highs) and Sinc. It changes only what you hear;
    the game, its echo and save states are unaffected. The choice is kept.
  • New upscaler shaders: ScaleFX, NNEDI3 (neural) and NNEDI3
    (neural, high)
    .
  • A fresh install starts with the CRT Lottes shader. An install that
    already has a shader chosen keeps it.
  • Updates never cost you a save. From the next update on, the updater
    copies your in-game saves and save states to save-backups\<date>_before_<version>\ before
    installing, leaves save files out of the copy and puts the backup back if
    they changed anyway. Save states from earlier versions keep working, and
    every release is now checked for that before it is published.

Fixed

  • HDMA raster effects (per-line color, layer and scroll changes) started one
    line late; they now start on the line the game asks for.
  • Choosing None as the shader during play no longer leaves a black
    screen.
  • Multi-pass shaders that read the original game frame from a later pass
    (ScaleFX) no longer draw black.

Updating from 0.1.2: accept the update offer when the game starts, then press Generate & rebuild. In-game saves, save states and settings are kept (checked for this release: a save and a save state made in 0.1.2 survive the update and load in 0.1.3).

Donkey Kong Country 3 Recomp 0.1.2

@mpolizel mpolizel released this 01 Nov 18:08

Donkey Kong Country 3 Recomp 0.1.2: renderer fixes, automatic updates and CRT by default. Setup pack: no ROM or game data is included; same first-run steps as before (see the README).

New

  • Check for updates on start (next to Skip launcher on boot, on by default): when a newer release is out, the game offers to install it. It downloads the new pack, copies it over the install without deleting anything, keeps your ROM selection and opens the setup window: press Generate & rebuild. In-game saves, save states and settings are kept; save states from an older version may not load in a newer one, in-game saves always do.
  • A fresh install starts with the CRT Geom (curved) shader. Whatever renderer or shader you pick in the launcher is saved and kept (Settings → Shader → None for the plain picture).

Fixed

  • Renderer: sprites use the sprite table that was current on each line, HDMA effects enabled during vblank start on the first line, and writes made at the start of vblank are no longer applied one frame late.

Updating from 0.1.1: download this zip and unpack it over your install folder (0.1.1 has no updater yet), then run DonkeyKongCountry3SNESRecomp.exe and press Generate & rebuild. Later versions update themselves.

Known limits

Most game code still runs through the snesrecomp interpreter; levels, saves and a full play-through are not yet verified.

Donkey Kong Country 3 Recomp 0.1.1

Choose a tag to compare

@mpolizel mpolizel released this 30 Oct 16:38

Setup pack for Donkey Kong Country 3 Recomp 0.1.1. Same first-run steps as 0.1.0 (see the README); no ROM or game data is included.

Changes since 0.1.0

  • Updated patches/snesrecomp-nmi-idle-loop-wai.patch. A handler that resets the stack and runs the game from NMI is now recognised for the rest of its run, even after it calls back below its interrupt frame, and the frame deadline parks it so the next frame resumes it. 0.1.0 could cut such a handler at the end of a frame and freeze: this was found on Donkey Kong Country 1, whose NMI uploads sound data across several frames with NMI off, and the same engine runs DKC3.
  • Re-verified: the Nintendo logo, copyright and opening world-map scene run at full speed with the updated patch.

Known limits

Most game code still runs through the snesrecomp interpreter. Levels, saves and a full play-through are not yet verified.

Donkey Kong Country 3 Recomp 0.1.0

Choose a tag to compare

@mpolizel mpolizel released this 30 Oct 14:58

First Windows release of Donkey Kong Country 3 Recomp.

This is a setup pack, not the game. It contains the launcher, the recompiler and the source code (with the framework patches applied); no ROM or game data is included or downloaded.

First run

  1. Unzip anywhere and start DonkeyKongCountry3SNESRecomp.exe.
  2. Let it download the portable build tools (one time per machine), or point it at a cmake-clang-v1 zip you already have.
  3. Pick your own Donkey Kong Country 3 (USA).sfc — the North American (En,Fr) release, CRC32 448eec19.
  4. Press Generate & rebuild. The playable game is built into build/ and started; run it from there afterwards.

What's in 0.1.0

  • Boots through the Nintendo logo and copyright into the opening world-map scene. DKC3's NMI handler never returns with RTI; a framework patch treats its WAI idle loop as the frame boundary (without it the game showed a black screen at ~4 fps).
  • Launcher Settings → Shader: 6 scanline, 5 CRT and 4 upscaler presets from libretro/glsl-shaders; choosing one switches the renderer to OpenGL automatically.
  • Opens without a console window; diagnostics go to DonkeyKongCountry3SNESRecomp.log.

Known limits

Most game code still runs through the snesrecomp interpreter. Levels, saves and a full play-through are not yet verified.
