Virtua Fighter 2 Recomp v0.1.6

What's new

  • Menu button: open the menu with L3 + R3 or a PlayStation touchpad click on any pad, and remap it in Controls
  • FPS counter hides while the menu is open
  • Windows: if Direct3D 12 shows no 3D (some older NVIDIA cards), the game now switches to Vulkan by itself before drawing anything, with a looser GPU check
  • log.txt shows the version on its first line

Thanks to @MagitekArmor and @duartepedro03 for testing the GPU fixes, and to everyone who reported issues.

  • Windows with CRT Emudriver (arcade cabinets): the GPU renderer isn't tried, as its start crashes there. The game starts straight away with the CPU's 3D.

Everything from v0.1.4 too: a steady 120 fps at high scales with the GPU renderer on Windows and Steam Deck, and the smooth-motion limit lifting again.

No ROMs or game data are included: bring your own MAME vf2 set. Install steps: https://vf2-recomp.pages.dev/

A quick fix for the GPU renderer.

  • GPU renderer: no longer switches off over a few pixels of rounding difference on some graphics cards (NVIDIA). The game still checks the GPU's picture against the CPU's when it starts, and still uses the CPU if the GPU's picture is really wrong; if you chose GPU (not Auto) in Display > 3D renderer, only a broken picture or an error switches it off.

Nothing else changed. Your settings, saves and ROM carry over.

  • GPU renderer: the 3D can now be drawn by the graphics card on Mac, Windows and Steam Deck, with exactly the same picture. Display > 3D renderer: Auto (the default, also for upgrades) uses the GPU unless it's slower on your machine. The game checks the GPU's picture when it starts and quietly uses the CPU if anything is off (log.txt says which it used).
  • Windows speed: much faster above 1x. The pictures were being drawn the slow way into Direct3D 11's textures; on fast PCs anything above 1x could stutter.
  • Stereo reverb fixed: the music's reverb is wide stereo again (it was a near-mono smear, and too loud). The default music volume is now 50; if you had the old default of 20 it moves to 50 once, and any other level you chose is kept.
  • Portable mode: put a file named portable.txt beside the game and it keeps everything (settings, saves, screenshots, log.txt and your vf2.zip) in its own folder, nothing in your user folder.
  • Your own ROM folder: start the game with --roms <folder>, set VF2_ROMS, or add roms_folder = <folder> to settings.ini, and it looks for vf2.zip there first, only reading it (e.g. Batocera's /userdata/roms/ports/vf2), so an update or reinstall can't touch your ROMs. log.txt says which folder it used. See the README.
  • Steam Deck: simpler install steps in the README (the shortcut points at the game itself). The Windows build also runs under Proton, but the native Linux build is the one to use.

You need your own MAME "vf2" set (vf2.zip). The Mac and Windows builds are unsigned. Unofficial fan project, not affiliated with SEGA.

  • Smooth motion: scenery that stands still no longer jumps for a moment (the swaying bushes on Jeffry's beach, palms and trees on 120 Hz and faster screens).
  • Sound balance: the crowd's roars now go with the effects, the loudest hits and the announcer no longer blast out over everything else, and the music starts at 20. Music 100 and effects 100 is the arcade's own mix.
  • Slower computers: the automatic quality drop now notices when pictures fall short (for example 2x with 2x antialiasing) and turns antialiasing off for the session, which also switches on the faster ways of drawing.

You need your own MAME "vf2" set (vf2.zip). The Mac and Windows builds are unsigned. Unofficial fan project, not affiliated with SEGA.

The first release of Virtua Fighter 2 (SEGA Model 2, 1994) as a native PC game. The arcade's own i960 program is recompiled to native code from your ROM as it starts, and checked frame by frame against MAME; the rest of the board runs on MAME's code.

  • Up to 6x the arcade resolution
  • Widescreen and ultrawide: the stages extend to the sides
  • Smooth motion at your screen's refresh rate, up to 120 fps
  • Antialiasing (Low, 2x, 3x), CRT and scanline filters, gamepads
  • PC or Arcade play style, and the arcade's own settings (Original or Version 2.1)
  • Mac, Windows, Linux / Steam Deck

You need your own MAME "vf2" set (vf2.zip). The Mac and Windows builds are unsigned. Unofficial fan project, not affiliated with SEGA.
