Privacy Policy for Location Guard (V3)

Effective date: October 14, 2026
Last updated: October 14, 2026
Applies to: Location Guard (V3), including version 3.1.0

Location Guard (V3) (the "Extension") is a browser extension designed to reduce the precision of the location that websites receive through the browser's JavaScript Geolocation API. This Privacy Policy explains what information the Extension processes, what it sends outside your device, why that processing occurs, and the choices available to you.

The Extension is maintained by mrfanii. Its source code is available in the Location-Guard-V3 repository.

1. Summary

  • Your real geolocation is processed locally to create a protected location. It is not sent to a Location Guard analytics server.
  • The Extension stores your settings, per-site privacy choices, fixed locations, saved location bookmarks, and temporarily cached protected locations in browser extension storage.
  • The Extension automatically sends usage analytics consisting of visited HTTP(S) page URLs, a referrer URL when available, a timestamp, and a pseudonymous installation identifier to a developer-operated analytics service.
  • Opening maps or using address search in the Extension sends requests to OpenStreetMap map-tile services and OpenRouteService.
  • The Extension does not sell personal information and does not use collected information for personalized advertising.

2. Information Processed by the Extension

2.1 Geolocation information

When a website requests your location and you allow the browser's geolocation permission request, the Extension may process the location returned by your browser or operating system. Depending on your settings, the Extension then:

  • adds controlled random noise to the location;
  • returns a fixed location selected by you;
  • returns a previously cached protected location; or
  • returns the real location if protection is paused or the site's privacy level is set to use the real location.

The protection calculation takes place on your device. The Extension does not intentionally transmit your real latitude, longitude, altitude, heading, or speed to the Location Guard analytics server.

The resulting location is returned to the website that requested it. That website's handling of the location is governed by its own privacy policy. If protection is paused or you select Use real location, the requesting website may receive your real location.

Your browser or operating system may use its own geolocation provider to determine your location. For example, it may send nearby Wi-Fi network information or other device signals to the browser vendor's geolocation service. This processing is controlled by your browser or operating system, not by Location Guard.

2.2 Settings and locally stored information

The Extension stores the following information in browser extension storage so that its features and your preferences continue to work:

  • whether protection is paused;
  • whether the Extension icon should be hidden where supported;
  • the default privacy level;
  • per-domain privacy levels, including the domain names for which you selected custom settings;
  • privacy radius, cache duration, accuracy, and related protection settings;
  • the currently selected fixed latitude and longitude;
  • saved fixed-location bookmarks, including their names and coordinates;
  • temporarily cached protected locations and their creation times; and
  • other configuration values required to operate the Extension.

This information is stored using the browser's local extension storage. It is not sent to the Location Guard analytics server as part of the settings storage process.

The Extension does not intentionally persist your unmodified real location. A location stored in the cache is the protected result generated by the Extension. However, a fixed location or bookmark chosen by you may represent a real or sensitive place, depending on what you enter.

2.3 Map tiles and address search

The Options and Demo pages can display interactive maps. When a map is opened, the Extension requests map tiles from:

  • OpenStreetMap Foundation-operated tile services; or
  • openstreetmap.de tile services when the browser is detected as Brave.

Map-tile requests reveal the requested map area through tile coordinates. The service provider also receives normal network information such as your IP address, user agent, and request time. If you center the map on your current or fixed location, the requested map area may reveal an approximate location to the tile provider.

Address searches in the Options page are sent to the OpenRouteService geocoding API operated by HeiGIT. The request may include the address or coordinate text you entered and ordinary network information.

These providers process information under their own policies:

You can avoid these requests by not opening the Extension's map pages and not using the map's current-location or address-search controls.

2.4 Information you provide when contacting us

If you contact the maintainer through GitHub, the information you submit is processed by GitHub under the GitHub Privacy Statement. GitHub issues are public. Do not include passwords, precise location data, analytics identifiers, or other sensitive information in a public issue.

3. Browser Permissions

The Extension requests the following permissions:

storage

Used to store the settings, domain-level choices, fixed locations, saved locations, cached protected locations, and pseudonymous analytics identifier described in Section 10.

Access to all websites (<all_urls>)

Location Guard must run before website scripts on pages and frames so it can intercept calls to the JavaScript Geolocation API and apply your selected protection. This access is also used to identify the current domain, apply per-site settings, update the Extension interface, and collect the page-navigation analytics described in Section 10.

The permission does not mean that Location Guard intentionally reads or stores the contents of every page. The current analytics implementation does, however, transmit page and referrer URLs as described above.

4. How Information Is Used

Information handled by the Extension is used to:

  • provide location obfuscation and fixed-location features;
  • apply your global and per-site privacy settings;
  • display and manage saved fixed locations;
  • cache protected locations for the duration selected by you;
  • display maps and process address searches when you use those features;
  • measure Extension usage and operation;
  • diagnose errors and maintain reliability and security;
  • prevent fraud, abuse, or attacks; and
  • comply with applicable legal obligations.

5. How Information Is Shared

Information may be disclosed only in the following circumstances:

  • Websites you use: A website requesting geolocation receives the location selected or generated by the Extension after the applicable browser permission flow.
  • Developer-operated analytics infrastructure: The analytics information described in Section 10 is sent to a service operated by the Extension developer.
  • Map and geocoding providers: OpenStreetMap-related tile services and OpenRouteService receive requests when you use the relevant map or search features.
  • Browser and platform providers: Browser storage, synchronization, geolocation, and extension-distribution services may process information according to their own policies.
  • Service providers: Hosting, infrastructure, security, or technical service providers may process information only as needed to operate and protect the applicable service.
  • Legal and safety reasons: Information may be disclosed when reasonably necessary to comply with law, legal process, enforceable government requests, protect users or the public, investigate abuse, or defend legal rights.
  • Business transfer: Information may be transferred as part of a merger, acquisition, reorganization, or sale of assets, subject to this Policy and applicable law.

The maintainer does not sell or rent personal information. Information obtained through the Extension is not shared for personalized, retargeted, or interest-based advertising.

6. Chrome Web Store Limited Use Disclosure

The use of information received from Chrome APIs is limited to providing, maintaining, securing, and improving the Extension's disclosed functionality and user experience.

Such information is not transferred to third parties except when necessary to provide or improve the Extension, comply with applicable law, protect security, or complete a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets. It is not used or transferred for personalized advertising, creditworthiness, lending, or other unrelated purposes.

Humans are not permitted to read personal or sensitive user data except when the user has provided specific consent, when access is necessary for security or abuse investigation, when required by law, or when data has been aggregated or anonymized for internal operations.

For more information, see the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy FAQ.

7. Data Retention

  • Local settings and saved locations: Retained in browser extension storage until you change or clear them, restore the Extension's defaults, clear the Extension's browser data, or uninstall the Extension. Browser behavior may vary.
  • Cached protected locations: Retained according to the cache duration you select and may remain in extension storage until replaced, cleared, or the Extension's storage is removed.
  • Pseudonymous analytics identifier: Retained in synchronized browser extension storage until the browser clears that storage. Restoring local defaults does not necessarily remove synchronized storage.
  • Analytics events and server logs: Retained only for as long as reasonably necessary for usage measurement, maintenance, troubleshooting, security, abuse prevention, and applicable legal obligations. Records may be aggregated or anonymized, after which they may no longer be linked to the pseudonymous identifier.
  • Legal or security records: May be retained longer where required by law or reasonably necessary to establish, exercise, or defend legal claims.

8. Your Choices and Controls

You can:

  • deny a website's geolocation permission request through your browser;
  • select a privacy level, fixed location, or real-location mode for a specific website;
  • pause the Extension;
  • delete cached protected locations from the Options page;
  • delete or edit saved fixed locations;
  • restore the Extension's default settings;
  • clear the Extension's data using your browser's extension or site-data controls;
  • disable browser synchronization to prevent the browser vendor from synchronizing extension data where supported; or
  • disable or uninstall the Extension to stop future processing by it.

Disabling protection or selecting real-location mode may allow requesting websites to receive your real location. Clearing local settings may not automatically delete data already sent to analytics, map, geocoding, browser, or website providers.

9. Access, Correction, and Deletion Requests

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to request access to, correction of, deletion of, restriction of, or objection to certain processing of your personal information.

Most Extension settings can be reviewed and changed directly in the Options page. Because the Extension does not require an account and the analytics identifier is pseudonymous, the maintainer may be unable to locate server-side analytics records unless you provide the relevant identifier. Do not post that identifier publicly.

To ask a privacy question or request a private contact method, open an issue in the Location-Guard-V3 issue tracker without including sensitive information. The maintainer may need to verify enough information to process a request and may retain limited records where required by law or necessary for security and legal claims.

10. Usage Analytics and Browsing Activity

The Extension sends visited HTTP(S) page URLs, a referrer URL when available, a timestamp, and a random pseudonymous identifier to a developer-operated analytics service over HTTPS. Full URLs may contain information added by a website, and the server may also receive standard network details such as your IP address and user agent. The Extension does not intentionally send page contents, form entries, passwords, or your precise geolocation for analytics, and the data is not used for personalized advertising. Disabling or uninstalling the Extension stops future reports.

11. Security

The Extension uses HTTPS for analytics, map tiles, and geocoding requests. Settings and cached data are stored through browser-provided extension storage. Reasonable technical and organizational safeguards are used to protect information against unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction.

No method of transmission or storage is completely secure. The Extension cannot guarantee the security practices of websites you visit, your browser or operating system, synchronization providers, or the third-party map and geocoding services described above.

12. International Data Transfers

The Extension and its service providers may process information in countries other than the country where you live. Those countries may have different data-protection laws. Where required, appropriate safeguards should be used for international transfers of personal information.

13. Children's Privacy

The Extension is not directed to children under 13, or the minimum age required by local law for independent consent to online services. The maintainer does not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the Extension, contact the maintainer so the matter can be reviewed.

14. Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control

The Extension does not currently alter its analytics behavior in response to browser Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signals. It does not sell personal information or use it for cross-context behavioral advertising.

15. Changes to This Policy

This Policy may be updated when the Extension's features, data practices, service providers, or legal obligations change. The date at the top of the Policy will be updated when changes are published. Material changes may also be announced through the repository, release notes, Extension listing, or an in-Extension notice where appropriate.

16. Contact

For questions about this Privacy Policy or the Extension's privacy practices, contact the maintainer through the Location-Guard-V3 issue tracker.

Because GitHub issues are public, do not include personal or sensitive information. Ask for a private contact method when necessary.
