MC Download Manager 1.3.0

@mstcvk mstcvk released this 11 Oct 16:17

The browser extensions now open the app when a download arrives

  • If MC Download Manager is not running when you start a download (or use the context menu / popup), the extension starts it in the background and hands the download over as soon as it is up. If the app cannot be started within a few seconds, the browser simply keeps the download.
  • Works in Safari, Chrome, Brave, Edge and Firefox. Chrome-family browsers and Firefox use a small launcher bundled with the app (native messaging); the app registers it with every installed browser when it starts.
  • Only file types the app captures trigger a launch. You can turn the behavior off in the extension popup ▸ "Open the app when a download arrives".

Updating the extensions

  • Firefox: Settings ▸ Browser Extensions ▸ Open Setup Wizard… ▸ Add to Firefox installs the 1.3.0 add-on. Firefox asks to allow "Exchange messages with programs other than Firefox"; this is what lets the add-on start the app.
  • Chrome / Brave: run the setup wizard's "Prepare Files" step again and click the reload icon of MC Download Manager on chrome://extensions (or restart the browser). No reinstall is needed.
  • Safari: updated together with the app.

Install: open the DMG and drag the app to Applications, or update from the app. Homebrew: brew upgrade --cask mc-download-manager.

Firefox support

  • MC Download Manager now works with Firefox (140 or later). The add-on is signed by Mozilla and ships inside the app: open Settings ▸ Browser Extensions ▸ Open Setup Wizard… and click Add to Firefox. Firefox asks for confirmation once and keeps the add-on installed.
  • Downloads of the captured file types and links you click are handed to the app together with cookies, Referer and User-Agent. The toolbar popup, the context menu ("Download with MC Download Manager", "Download video from this page"), page video detection and live progress work as in Chrome.
  • Firefox has no way to hold a download before it starts. The add-on pauses it immediately and cancels it once the app takes over, so no duplicate file is left in your Downloads folder.

Also includes 1.1.1: YouTube downloads ask to install the deno JavaScript runtime and retry without cookies when YouTube rejects the signed-in request.

Install: open the DMG and drag the app to Applications, or update from the app. Homebrew: brew upgrade --cask mc-download-manager.

Fixes YouTube downloads that failed with ERROR: [youtube] …: The page needs to be reloaded or n challenge solving failed.

JavaScript runtime for YouTube

  • YouTube now requires yt-dlp to run JavaScript to unlock video streams. When a YouTube download starts and no runtime is found, the app asks to install deno (~40 MB) from its official GitHub releases. The download is SHA-256 verified and kept in the app's Application Support folder. The waiting download continues automatically afterwards.
  • An existing deno installation (Homebrew, ~/.deno) is used automatically.
  • Settings ▸ Video shows the deno status with an Install/Update button.

Browser cookies

  • Downloads started from the browser extension carry your YouTube cookies, which make yt-dlp use a signed-in client that YouTube currently rejects (yt-dlp#17389). Such downloads are now retried once without cookies.

Install: open the DMG and drag the app to Applications, or update from the app (it checks GitHub Releases). Homebrew: brew upgrade --cask mc-download-manager.

Signed and notarized. This release is signed with a Developer ID certificate and notarized by Apple: no "Open Anyway" step, and the Safari extension no longer needs "Allow Unsigned Extensions".

Menu bar app

  • Starts at login (enabled after the first-run setup) and lives in the menu bar: no window and no Dock icon at launch, so browser extensions can hand over downloads at any time.
  • Closing the window keeps the app running; quit from the menu bar icon. The Dock icon appears only while a window is open.
  • The menu bar icon shows the download percentage while something is running.
  • New app icon: a ring with a streaming arrow (dots → dash → line).

Browser extensions

  • Fixed: the Chrome/Brave extension could not reach the app after the 1.0.0 security hardening (Chrome omits the Origin header on extension requests). The extension now identifies itself with a header that web pages cannot send.
  • Toolbar badge shows live progress (%, count, ✓ when done).
  • Popup gets a Downloads section: progress bar, speed, yt-dlp stage, pause/resume/cancel.
  • Settings ▸ Browser Extensions refreshes its status automatically; the setup wizard no longer floats above Safari and System Settings.

First download experience

  • Downloads-folder access is requested during setup instead of in the middle of the first download.
  • The download window opens in front of the browser.

Install: open the DMG and drag the app to Applications. Safari: Settings ▸ Extensions ▸ enable MC Download Manager. Chrome/Brave: run the setup wizard from Settings ▸ Browser Extensions. If you installed the Chrome extension from an earlier version, reload it on chrome://extensions after updating.
