The first release of Downsweep: a menu bar app that keeps your Downloads folder tidy without you writing a single rule. Nothing is ever deleted: everything goes to the Trash and can be undone from History.

Install

brew install --cask muhghazaliakbar/tap/downsweep

Or download Downsweep-1.0.0.dmg below and drag Downsweep to Applications. Requires macOS 26 Tahoe.

This build isn't notarized yet. The first time you open Downsweep, macOS blocks it. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway. Updates after that install without asking again.

What it does

  • Installers you've already used. Looks inside DMG, ZIP and PKG files and suggests trashing the ones whose app is already installed.
  • Duplicate downloads. Finds report (1).pdf when it's byte-for-byte the same as report.pdf.
  • Sort by source. Moves files by where they were downloaded from, e.g. mail.google.com → Attachments.
  • Stale files. Tags files you haven't opened in 30 days, and suggests the Trash 14 days later.
  • Safe by design. Leaves alone anything changed in the last 2 minutes, re-checks every item right before acting, and asks before any sweep over 50 items or 10 GB.
