808.html is a modern homage to the classic 80s drum machines, built as a single self-contained index.html. No samples, no installs, no build step; every sound is synthesized live in the browser with the Web Audio API, which is why the whole instrument is one small file.

Play it live: https://benjaminmullins.tv/808
Or download index.html and open it. That's the whole install.

What's in it:

  • 8 pads, 4 sound variants each, fully synthesized and based on 80s kits
  • per-pad choke and pitch, plus master verb, comp, and heat; with 13 pitches and 5 tail lengths per pad, the dice roll from roughly 2.6 sextillion possible kit states
  • live recording with auto-detected tempo, overdub layering, knob-motion automation, and non-destructive quantize down to 1/32
  • SHIFT layer: volume and reverb send on the pad dials, plus swing, mute, and a silent live-edit mode
  • roll the dice to randomize the whole kit in one tap; 16 levels of undo (it can even bring back a bank you just cleared)
  • 4 memory banks that switch seamlessly on the bar line
  • MIDI in, MIDI export, and seamless WAV export (16- or 24-bit); drop the WAV into your DAW for a perfect loop
  • share any beat as a tiny link your friend can open, tweak, and send right back
