🔄 Changes

  • Galley no longer switches macOS font smoothing off at launch. Text is drawn at the system default weight, so a page now looks exactly as it does in Preview — both use the same PDFKit engine, and the smoothing setting was the only thing making Galley's body text look lighter
  • Font smoothing is the slight thickening macOS applies to every antialiased glyph on screen. On a text-only page it puts about a quarter more ink on the screen than the glyph outlines themselves cover, which is why the previous rendering looked thinner
  • If you prefer the thinner rendering — it is the closer match to the bare outlines a high-resolution imagesetter would put on paper — turn smoothing off for Galley alone:
defaults write com.github.munepi.galley CGFontRenderingFontSmoothingDisabled -bool YES
defaults write com.github.munepi.galley AppleFontSmoothing -int 0
Relaunch afterwards; the value is read once at startup

⬆️ Upgrading

Versions up to v0.5 wrote those same two keys into Galley's preferences on every launch, and updating does not remove them. If text still looks thinner than in Preview after installing v0.6, delete both keys once and relaunch:

defaults delete com.github.munepi.galley CGFontRenderingFontSmoothingDisabled
defaults delete com.github.munepi.galley AppleFontSmoothing

🔔 Important Notes

  • Requires macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later
  • Universal Binary (Apple Silicon + Intel)
  • Apple notarized and signed with Developer ID. The application bundle carries a stapled notarization ticket of its own, so the first launch works without a network connection
  • Neither rendering is "the" correct weight. Smoothing off reproduces the outline geometry; smoothing on is Apple's on-screen compensation for the thinning effect of grayscale antialiasing, and on a text-only page it lands close to what a 600 dpi laser printer's binary rasterization produces, before toner spread.
