AVP Play 1.1.10
Games
- Demeo is verified, with its mixed-reality mode. Until now the game ended at its start ("Unable to initialize the Unity Engine Graphics API"). It now starts, reaches its lobby and plays, and when you choose mixed reality your room shows around the board. Recipe included (about 4.3 GB).
- The game cannot sign in to its maker's account service here: that needs a sign-in proof only Meta's own software on a Quest hands out, and AVP Play does not make one up. It plays with a local player instead. Playing online with others has not been tried.
- Your player gets a number of this installation's own, so that your progress is not filed under the same account as everybody else's.
- Edge smoothing is held at 2x for this game. At 4x it needed nearly all the memory an app may use.
- A player name you can set. A Quest game takes the player's name from the headset's account and has no way to change it. Games that are handed a local player here showed "kleptonplayer" for everybody. Their start window now has a Player name field under Settings. Where a game wants a name without spaces, letters, digits,
.,_and-are kept.
All games
- Unity 6 games can open network connections of their own. Their requests failed before they began ("Cannot connect to destination host"): the toolchain passed a Linux-only option on to the system, which refused the connection. In Demeo that left the lobby black for ever. This applies to every game built with Unity 6; it has been seen fixed in Demeo.
- Mixed reality for Unity games. A Unity game files its passthrough layer differently from an Unreal one. Both ways are understood now. It is switched on for the games it has been seen with: TRIANGLE STRATEGY and Demeo.
- A game that asked Android twice for the same system object stopped the second time ("GetObjectClass on an untagged pointer"). Fixed.
Toolchain
- 365 (
6b05989), up from 358. After this release every installed game shows "Update"; nothing has to be downloaded again for that.
Good to know
- Demeo's first minutes can stutter: each kind of surface is prepared the first time it is drawn, about a third of a second each. A session records what it prepared, and the next start does that work in the start window ("Preparing graphics") before the game begins. In the author's sessions the stutter from this was gone on the second start; what remained fell on loading the lobby and a level.
- Seen on the author's headset: Demeo's lobby, tutorial and a level, its mixed-reality mode, the player name reaching the game, and the larger picture (4000 across) at 100 Hz in a short session.
- Not seen by the project: Demeo started from this release's toolchain (it is built and installed; the author played builds a few changes earlier); a longer session at the larger picture; playing online; a name the game's server accepts (it refused the two that were tried as "not available" – names are unique there); the Player name field in any other game; the network fix in any other Unity 6 game.
- Not checked with this toolchain: every other game on a headset.
From 1.0.1 the app updates itself: it should offer this version within a day, or right away under Settings › Updates › Check Now.

AVP Play 1.1.9
Games
- TRIANGLE STRATEGY is verified, with its mixed-reality mode. When you choose mixed reality in the game, your room shows around the playing field. Until now the game was told there is no passthrough. Recipe included (about 7.5 GB).
- Marvel's Deadpool VR and other Vulkan games: edge smoothing as a setting. A Vulkan game that smooths its edges by itself with fewer than four samples can be raised to 4x in its start window ("Picture" › "Edge smoothing"). For Deadpool 4x is the default; for every other game the default is what the game does itself. The choice appears after a game has run once with this toolchain. The first start after a change compiles the game's shaders again.
- A hang on loading screens – seen in Marvel's Deadpool VR, where the game stopped behind its loading screen without crashing: a fault in how the toolchain keeps track of a game's locks could leave one locked for good. That is fixed. It could be reproduced on the Mac; that it was what stopped Deadpool is likely, not proven.
All games
- Frame rate is a setting in every game's start window: Up to 100, the default since 1.1.7, or Up to 120, which is smoother where the game manages it and the Vision Pro's display can do it. When a game cannot keep up, the Vision Pro halves the rate for a while – 100 to 50, 120 to 60. Mixed-reality games (TRIANGLE STRATEGY) have no such choice: their room only shows in the space that runs at up to 100.
- "Display output" under Settings › Advanced says how finely the finished picture is put on the display: Light, Standard or Full. It starts at Light, which leaves the graphics chip more time for the game – except for Beat Saber and Doom 3, which draw at the display's own size. If a game looks coarser to you than before, raise it.
- Under Settings › Advanced › Diagnostics a game can record what it is waiting for, for reports about hangs. Off unless you switch it on.
The app
- Jobs run in a fixed order, from the bottom of the list upwards, and a waiting job can be moved (drag it, or use its menu).
Toolchain
- 358 (
159bc20), up from 348. After this release every installed game shows "Update"; nothing has to be downloaded again for that.
Good to know
- Seen on the author's headset: TRIANGLE STRATEGY in its mixed-reality mode; Deadpool with 4x edge smoothing and Light as they come by default; the job list in a development copy of the app.
- Not seen by the project: the frame-rate setting on a headset, in either position; 4x edge smoothing in a Vulkan game other than Deadpool; Light in most other games; TRIANGLE STRATEGY built from this release's toolchain (it is built and installed, not started – the author played a slightly earlier build).
- Not checked with this toolchain: every other game on a headset.
From 1.0.1 the app updates itself: it should offer this version within a day, or right away under Settings › Updates › Check Now.

AVP Play 1.1.8
Fixes for 1.1.7
- Unreal games on OpenGL quit at start after the update to 1.1.7 – seen with Maestro; Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge, The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners and other Unreal titles that run on OpenGL here were very likely hit the same way. These games keep the shader programs they have already built in their own files. 1.1.7 brought a new build of the graphics translation layer (ANGLE), which does not accept programs made by the previous build, and Unreal treats that as fatal. A game now throws that stored set away whenever it is updated to a new build and builds its programs again. Press "Update" on the game's page; the first start afterwards takes a little longer, once.
- Doom 3: edge smoothing is taken out again. With it switched on, the picture flickered black now and then. The setting stays for Beat Saber (1.45) and Maestro.
- Doom 3 with foveated rendering: both eyes are equally sharp at the same spot again. Since 1.1.6 each eye was drawn with its own half of the display's sharpness map – sharp towards the nose, coarser outwards – which showed in this game as one eye blurred where the other was sharp. That way of drawing is now used for Beat Saber only, where it was asked for and looks right; every other game draws both eyes alike, as until 1.1.5.
- Doom 3 with foveated rendering is drawn larger: 5720x5720 per eye instead of 4400x4400. If it runs less smoothly for you, lower "Resolution" in the game's start window.
A correction to the 1.1.7 notes
- They said that in the new mixed space a game "runs at up to 100 Hz and stays there". That holds for a game that reaches 100, like Beat Saber. A game that cannot keep up is halved there as well, to 50 – Doom 3 ran at 50 on the author's headset. What the mixed space avoids is the fall from 120 to 60 for games that manage 100 but not 120.
Toolchain
- 348 (
3feb8d9), up from 344. After this release every installed game shows "Update"; nothing has to be downloaded again for that.
Good to know
- Seen on the author's headset: Maestro starts again (with the fix built before this package; the package's own build is installed, not started). On the Mac, Maestro fails with a stored program set from the headset on the new graphics layer exactly as it did there, and runs without it.
- Not seen by the project: Doom 3 as it is in this release – the black flicker went away on the author's headset when edge smoothing was switched off there, and the build without the setting and with both eyes drawn alike has not been started yet. The other Unreal games after the update.
- Not checked with this toolchain: every other game on a headset.
From 1.0.1 the app updates itself: it should offer this version within a day, or right away under Settings › Updates › Check Now.

AVP Play 1.1.7
All games
- Every game now runs at up to 100 Hz and stays there. Until now some games – Beat Saber, Doom 3, Half-Life: Alyx, Counter-Strike, Skydance's BEHEMOTH among them – opened a fully immersive space. There the Vision Pro's panel runs at up to 120 Hz, but visionOS halves that to 60 for the rest of a level as soon as a game cannot keep up, and the app cannot switch it back. Now every game opens a mixed space, which runs at up to 100 Hz and does not fall back.
- Where a game shows no picture – while it loads, between menu and level – it is black, as on a Quest, instead of your room. That also holds for the games that already ran in a mixed space and showed the room in those moments.
- The version in the corner of a game's start window is no longer cut off.
Games
- Beat Saber (1.45), Maestro, Doom 3: edge smoothing. The start window's "Picture" settings have a new one, "Edge smoothing": off, 2x or 4x (MSAA). It is off by default because it costs frame rate – lower "Resolution" in the same place along with it. Beat Saber and Maestro ask for this smoothing themselves and did not get it so far; Doom 3 gets it added.
- Beat Saber: "Resolution" goes down to 25% for it. With foveated rendering on, the game starts from the display's full size, where 50% is still a fine picture.
Toolchain
- 344 (
698dda6), up from 334. After this release every installed game shows "Update"; nothing has to be downloaded again for that. - The graphics translation layer for OpenGL games (ANGLE) is a new build: it can draw both eyes into a multisampled target in one pass, which the edge smoothing needs. Every OpenGL game runs on it, also with the setting off.
Good to know
- Seen on the author's headset: Beat Saber 1.45 with edge smoothing at 4x and off, at full resolution and at 25%; and in the mixed space with black, at 100 Hz throughout a session. With 4x at the display's full resolution in the fully immersive space the game fell to 60 Hz halfway through a song – which is why the smoothing is off by default and the space is a mixed one now. 2x was only run on the Mac.
- Not seen by the project: Maestro and Doom 3 with edge smoothing switched on (Doom 3's is the less certain of the two – tell us if the picture is wrong, and switch it off again). Any game other than Beat Saber in the mixed space with black. The edge of the picture during fast head turns: a mixed space can show a sliver of the room there where the fully immersive one showed black.
- On the Mac, Beat Saber 1.40.8 draws the same picture with the new graphics layer as with the old one. Not checked with this toolchain: every other game on a headset.
- A Vision Pro with the M2 chip has no 120 Hz, so the first point changes less there; it was not tested on one.
From 1.0.1 the app updates itself: it should offer this version within a day, or right away under Settings › Updates › Check Now.

AVP Play 1.1.6
Games
- Beat Saber is now the store's current version, 1.45.2, and from here on follows the store like the other games. "Update" on the game's page installs it over 1.40.8; saved games stay. Song packs you bought are downloaded and unlocked as before (280 are known to the recipe).
- 1.45 has no edge smoothing yet. Instead it is drawn at the display's full resolution with foveated rendering, which is switched on once for every copy built with this toolchain; you can turn it off again in the game's start window. The foveation is fixed, not eye-tracked: visionOS gives an app like this neither gaze nor a map that follows the eyes.
- Level changes and loading are black instead of showing your room.
- The game no longer sends requests to Meta's servers.
- 1.40.8 stays available as a second verified version (see "The app").
- BattleGlide (0.4.1, early access) is new as a verified game. It quit at start on a system function the toolchain lacked.
- Eye of the Temple: the whip is drawn (a fix a user sent in). Foveated rendering is off by default for this game.
- Pistol Whip: back to the menu after a run (a fix a user sent in).
- Maestro: song packs you bought are unlocked ("Sync DLCs" on the game's page); checked with one pack.
- Walkabout Mini Golf: the list of shaders compiled before the first start grew to 1,686, with what the Homestar Runner pack needed on the author's headset. 6.7 stays available as a second verified version.
- TRIANGLE STRATEGY: no longer quits at start on two missing system functions, and choosing passthrough in the game is answered instead of ending it (a fix a user sent in, taken over in part). It is listed as Community Verified.
The app
- Choose which version of a game to install. A game's page has a version menu: the versions the project has verified come first, below them whatever else the Meta Store names for the game – those are not tested and say so.
- Every game's start window on the Vision Pro now shows, small in a corner, which version of the game and of the toolchain is installed.
Toolchain
- 334 (
0b9f65d), up from 315. After this release every installed game shows "Update"; nothing has to be downloaded again for that. - Foveated rendering in general: the grid that undoes the foveation is four times finer. With the old one the picture could look slightly wavy where the foveation begins.
- In full immersion the Vision Pro's panel runs at 120 Hz, and visionOS drops to 60 Hz for a while when a game misses frames. The app cannot force it back.
Good to know
- Seen on the author's headset: Beat Saber 1.45.2 updated in place over 1.40.8 with its saved games, lights, black transitions, and several levels at 120 Hz with foveated rendering; the version in the start window; Eye of the Temple's whip; Maestro's pack.
- BattleGlide was played on the author's headset with the fix built from a working copy. The released toolchain was then used to build and install it with the recipe; that build was not started.
- Not seen by the project: TRIANGLE STRATEGY and Pistol Whip with their fixes (the senders report them), and installing an untested store version from the new menu all the way through.
- Not checked with this toolchain: every other game on a headset.
From 1.0.1 the app updates itself: it should offer this version within a day, or right away under Settings › Updates › Check Now.

AVP Play 1.1.5
Games
- Walkabout Mini Golf compiles its shaders before the first start. Until now the game stood still for a moment – a fifth to a third of a second – whenever something was drawn for the first time, because its shader was compiled right then. The project now ships a list of the shader combinations the game uses (1,396 of them), and the Vision Pro compiles them while the start window is still up: a few minutes once, with a progress bar. Press "Update" on the game's page to get it.
- The list holds no shader code, only where each shader lies in the game's files. Your Mac builds the archive from your own copy of the game (about 11 MB) and copies it to your own headset; nothing of it goes anywhere else.
- The list was made by loading every course on a Mac with the game's own test run, plus what the author's headset needed while playing. Loading a course is not playing it: for courses the author has not played, effects that only appear during play can still cost a moment the first time. The Homestar Runner content pack is not in the list yet.
- It fits version 6.8. With 6.7 files most of it is still found (1,593 of 1,641 shaders); the rest is compiled during play as before.
The app
- Builds that archive when it copies a game's data to the headset, once per version of the list, and keeps it in the game's folder on the Mac. If building it fails, the game is installed without it and behaves as before; the copy step says so.
- Needs toolchain 315 for this. With an older toolchain nothing changes.
Toolchain
- 315 (
868877a), up from 304. After this release every installed game shows "Update"; nothing has to be downloaded again for that. - For games other than Walkabout Mini Golf nothing changes in how they run: the rest of what is new are the tools the list is made with and diagnostics that are off unless switched on.
- New third-party part, named in THIRD-PARTY.md: SMOL-V by Aras Pranckevičius (public domain or MIT), which decodes the form Unity stores Vulkan shaders in. It is compiled on your Mac the first time a list is built.
Good to know
- Seen on the author's headset: the compile with its progress bar before Walkabout Mini Golf started, and the game playing afterwards – with this toolchain's source built from the working copy. The package itself was then used to build and install the game and to build the archive (all 1,641 shaders found); that build was not started.
- Not measured yet: how much of the hitching this takes away. What it cannot take away is said above.
- Not checked with this toolchain: every other game on a headset.
- Content packs bought inside Walkabout Mini Golf (seen with Homestar Runner and three cosmetic packs bought today): "Sync DLCs" on the game's page brings the purchase to the headset, and the game shows and opens them.
From 1.0.1 the app updates itself: it should offer this version within a day, or right away under Settings › Updates › Check Now.

AVP Play 1.1.4
The app
- "Check Purchase" on every Meta Store game's page. It asks Meta right away whether the account you are signed in with owns that game, and says what came back. On a game that counts as not owned the button sits directly under "Install"; otherwise under "Good to Know", with the time Meta was last asked.
- A game you have just bought no longer shows as "Not in your Meta account" for up to a day. The app kept Meta's answer for 24 hours whichever way it went, a game that counts as not owned can be neither downloaded nor installed, and signing out and in again was the only thing that threw the answers away – which is what some of you found out. Now a "no" is asked again after an hour, and after ten minutes when you open the game's page; a "yes" still lasts a day.
- If Meta says a game is not in your account although you bought it: a new purchase can take a few minutes to show up, and a game bought with another Meta account needs that account under Setup.
Toolchain
- Unchanged: 304 (
bb9f621), the same package as in 1.1.3. Installed games do not show "Update" because of this release.
Good to know
- Tried on the author's Mac: the button and what it reports, on the page of a game that is in the account and of one that is not, and that opening the page of a game that counted as not owned asks again by itself.
- Not tried: a game bought between two checks – the case this is for. Nothing was bought for the test.
From 1.0.1 the app updates itself: it should offer this version within a day, or right away under Settings › Updates › Check Now.

AVP Play 1.1.3
Games
- Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge is Verified. It runs with a fix a user sent in and the project's own work on top: the game got past its black start room, its curved menu panels are drawn, and its video screens no longer fill the memory.
- Walkabout Mini Golf is verified at 6.8, the new course included. If you have 6.7 installed, the start page shows "Update available".
- Asgard's Wrath 2 – three things, all after "Update" on the game's page:
- It starts again after an update. The game hands over the shaders it saved, and compiling all of them took a minute or more in front of a black picture – long enough to look like a game that does not start. It now starts without them when they are not ready at once and shows its own "compiling shaders" screen instead.
- German, French and the other languages. The game has no language menu; text and voices follow the headset's language, and every game was told "English". It is now told the headset's language, and the voice pack you ticked on the game's page is copied to the headset and used (it was downloaded and then left on the Mac).
- Loading screens no longer show broken pictures that differ between the eyes, and what is around them is black.
- Batman: Arkham Shadow shows black with its loading symbol while a level loads, as on a Quest, instead of the level being put together.
- Pistol Whip has whole sound, with a fix a user sent in that the project has taken over but not tested itself (it does not own the game). It stays Community Verified.
- A "Game language" choice in every game's start window on the headset (shown when the headset is not set to English): English, or the headset's language. It is English unless you change it – except for Asgard's Wrath 2, which starts with the headset's language. Games that offer the language use it for their text and, where they have them, voices.
The app
- Newer versions from the Meta Store. When the store has a newer version of a verified game than the one the project tested, the game's page offers both: the tested one, or the newest – marked as untested, your choice. Beat Saber stays at its tested version. Which version is current the app asks Meta itself, for games you own, at most once in twenty hours per game; it is the query the store's own apps use, not a documented developer interface, and the README says so.
- An update of a game downloads what changed, not everything. Files that are the same in the version already on your Mac are taken from there. From Walkabout 6.7 to 6.8 that was 40 of 129 files.
- An older version on the headset shows as "Update available" on the start page once a newer one is verified.
- No pause between downloads from Meta any more. It was two seconds a file, which for a game of a hundred files was minutes of waiting.
Toolchain
- 304 (
bb9f621), up from 291. After this release every installed game shows "Update"; nothing has to be downloaded again for that. - For all games: a game's own fade of the picture to black is applied (it was accepted and ignored), and curved panels are drawn curved.
Good to know
- Played on the author's headset while this toolchain was made: Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge, Asgard's Wrath 2 (start, German, loading screens), Batman: Arkham Shadow (loading screens), Walkabout Mini Golf. Each with the toolchain as it stood at that moment, not with the final package: Asgard's Wrath 2 was played before the fade went in, Walkabout 6.8 with the previous toolchain and 6.7 with an earlier state of this one. The final package was test-built with Beat Saber and installed, not played; Beat Saber was run through its start and 240 frames on a Mac with the final state.
- Not checked by the project with this toolchain: every other game on a headset. The fade changes the part that puts every game's picture on the display; a game that does not ask for a fade gets the picture as before. If a game that ran before is too dark or black after "Update", please report it – the previous build of a game is not touched until you update it.
- Not checked by the project at all: the Pistol Whip sound fix (confirmed by its sender), and Skydance's BEHEMOTH, whose loading screens now also have black around them instead of the room.
- Still open: Walkabout Mini Golf stutters a little about once a second. What causes it is not found yet; this toolchain writes more about it into the game's log.
From 1.0.1 the app updates itself: it should offer this version within a day, or right away under Settings › Updates › Check Now.

AVP Play 1.1.2
Games
- Maestro is Verified. It runs with the new toolchain; the picture, the hall and the orchestra are as they should be. Song packs you have not bought are skipped when the files are fetched.
- Batman: Arkham Shadow speaks the language you choose. With German chosen and the German voice pack installed, the game still spoke English: the voice banks have the same names in every language pack, and the wrong pack's file was handed to the game. To get the fix, open the game's page and choose "Update" – saved games and data are kept.
- Sniper Elite VR is Community Verified – from a loading screen that never ends to playable, with a fix a user sent in that the project has taken over but not tested itself (it does not own the game). According to its sender still open: button prompts drawn as black squares, and the sniper scope washed out after its first use.
- Beat Saber no longer quits seconds into its start on some networks (a failed network probe took the game down; fix sent in by a user).
- Witchblood and The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners now show as Community Verified in the catalogue. Their fixes have been in since 1.1.0, but one report each from before the fix kept them at "Incompatible". A report now counts only if it was made with the toolchain a game's fix is in, or a newer one.
The app
- A game does not show files as missing that Meta does not deliver to your account (add-on content you have not bought). Maestro stood at "3 of 11 files" with everything there.
Toolchain
- 291 (
33df7b3), up from 281. After this release every installed game shows "Update"; nothing has to be downloaded again for that. - It contains the work that made Maestro run, merged with what Tales from the Galaxy's Edge and Saints & Sinners had brought in since; where both had built the same thing, one version is left.
Good to know
- Played on the author's headset: Maestro, and Batman: Arkham Shadow with German voice-over – with the toolchain as it stood before the two last fixes from users (Beat Saber, Sniper Elite VR) went in. The final package was test-built with Maestro and installed, not played again. Beat Saber was run through its start and 240 frames on a Mac with the final state.
- Not checked by the project with this toolchain: every other game on a headset. Part of the Maestro work changes how graphics state is kept for all games that draw through OpenGL ES; if a game that ran before shows a broken picture after "Update", please report it – the previous build of a game is not touched until you update it.
- Not checked by the project at all: Sniper Elite VR and the Beat Saber network fix (confirmed by their senders).
From 1.0.1 the app updates itself: it should offer this version within a day, or right away under Settings › Updates › Check Now.

AVP Play 1.1.1
Saved games
- AVP Play now copies your saved games from the Vision Pro to your Mac. It does so after you quit a game, every few hours while the app is open, and on a button (a game's page, Settings, or the File menu). Each change is kept as a copy of its own – the twelve newest per game – so nothing is overwritten.
- Remove a game from the headset and keep playing later. The copies stay on the Mac. When the game is installed again and has no saved games on the headset, the last copy is put back; a switch on the game's page turns that off, and a button there puts a copy back on request (what is on the headset at that moment is fetched first). This is what a free Apple account needs, with its three apps at a time.
- The copies never leave your Mac. They are kept in
AVP Play Saved Gamesnext to your downloads folder if you have chosen one, otherwise with the app's data. Settings › Saved Games turns the automatic part off; with the background service for signatures on, it also runs while AVP Play is closed. - Covered: games that come as an Android app – every Meta Store game, Doom 3, Counter-Strike. Not covered yet: games that run as Linux programs (Half-Life: Alyx, which has Steam Cloud instead).
Copying to the headset
- Cable or Wi-Fi is shown. With a USB cable on the Developer Strap macOS uses the cable by itself; Setup, the sidebar, a job's log and its progress line say which connection is in use.
- The progress bar moves within a large file and no longer stands still until the file is done.
The app
- New filter in the overview: Downloaded, Not Installed.
- Fixed: with more than a hundred favourites and own games together, the Favourites filter showed only a part of them.
- Jobs can be taken off the list – finished ones, stopped ones, or all that are not running; a single job by right-click. Downloaded files and everything on the headset stay.
- Which folder is which game: a text file
AVP Play – Index.txtin the downloads folder says it, and a game's page shows its folder in Finder. - Export your list of games as a text file: downloaded, in your Meta account, favourites (Data › Export Game List), or exactly what the overview shows with Installed, Downloaded, Not Installed or Favourites set. Only a list – to pass on, for example to this project, so that it knows which games people have that do not run yet.
- Older toolchains are removed by themselves once a newer one is installed, and what building a game left behind goes when that build is more than a week old. Settings turns this off.
- When Xcode's build tool finds no Apple account although Xcode shows one ("No Accounts"), the app says so and what helps: sign out in Xcode › Settings › Accounts and sign in again.
- Command line:
avpplay savesfetches saved games, avpplay saves <id> --restoreputs them back, andinstall/stageprint the copy progress.
Toolchain
- Unchanged: 281 (
75996d1), the same package as in 1.1.0. Installed games do not show "Update" because of this release.
Good to know
- Tried on a Vision Pro (M5) on the cable: Beat Saber, installed as a second copy under a name of its own – 2.08 GB copied in 13 seconds, the progress moved within its 1.3 GB file, and the nine files of saved games put back into the fresh copy were identical to the ones fetched before. Fetching was also run for sixteen installed games.
- Not checked by the project: the progress within a file over Wi-Fi, the saved games of every single game (what counts as a saved game is a rule, not a list per game – look into the copy with "Show in Finder" if a game matters to you), and fetching from the background service.
