Through guest lectures, workshops, conference presentations, and classroom sessions, we engage with high school, undergraduate, and graduate students to share practical knowledge, career insights, and hands-on experience with MySQL. This session introduced students to MySQL, the world's most popular open source relational database, and explored its role in powering many of the internet's largest applications. The presentation covered the fundamentals of relational databases, how MySQL solves real-world software development challenges, and why database skills are valuable across careers in software engineering, data engineering, and cloud computing. Students also learned about the MySQL open source community, educational resources, and career opportunities available to those who develop database expertise. The event was co-hosted with a complementary industry presentation on modern database architectures using object storage, providing attendees with both foundational database knowledge and insight into emerging data technologies.

A Day in the Life of a Developer/DBA

This presentation introduces students to two popular career paths for professionals with SQL and database skills: Database Administrator (DBA) and Database Developer. Through real-world examples, attendees gain insight into the day-to-day responsibilities of each role, including database security, disaster recovery, performance tuning, system maintenance, software development, testing, debugging, and collaborating with cross-functional teams. The session also emphasizes the importance of problem-solving, communication, and continuous learning as essential skills for long-term success in technology careers.
