Through guest lectures, workshops, conference presentations, and classroom sessions, the MySQL Community Team partners with educational institutions around the world to introduce students to open source, databases, and MySQL technologies.

This session introduces students to MySQL, the world's most popular open-source relational database, and explores its role in powering many of the internet's largest applications. The presentation covers the fundamentals of relational databases, how MySQL solves real-world software-development challenges, and why database skills are valuable across careers in software engineering, data engineering, and cloud computing.
Students also learn about the MySQL open-source community, educational resources, and career opportunities available to those who develop database expertise. The event can be co-hosted with a complementary industry presentation on modern database architectures using object storage, giving attendees both foundational database knowledge and insight into emerging data technologies.
This presentation introduces students to two popular career paths for professionals with SQL and database skills: Database Administrator (DBA) and Database Developer. Through real-world examples, attendees gain insight into the day-to-day responsibilities of each role, including database security, disaster recovery, performance tuning, system maintenance, software development, testing, debugging, and collaboration with cross-functional teams.
The session also emphasizes problem-solving, communication, and continuous learning as essential skills for long-term success in technology careers.
