StarCraft 64 launcher 0.1.0

@n0madic n0madic released this 13 Oct 19:54

First public release of the StarCraft 64 native port (NTSC-U): a launcher that builds the game on your own machine from your own ROM.

These packages contain no game data: no ROM, no generated game code, no game module and no icon made from the game. You need an NTSC-U ROM (SHA-1 a36d91b5aac7bb95df0d7de5f9814f5270e25c2b). Nothing about the game leaves your machine.

SHA-256 sums are in SHA256SUMS.txt.

Desktop

  1. Unpack and start the application. The start screen offers Select ROM.
  2. Pick your ROM. On the first start the launcher builds the game module from it (five steps, shown on screen), then starts the game. It needs a C compiler; if none is found it downloads a pinned zig (about 50–100 MB) once.
  3. The module is stored in the application's private storage and is rebuilt only when a new version needs it.

The macOS app is ad-hoc sealed but not notarized and the Windows executables are unsigned; README.txt in each package explains how to open them the first time.

Android

The phone cannot build the game, so the module is built on a computer:

sc64_setup --rom your.z64 --target android-arm64 # needs the Android NDK

Then either use Select game module on the start screen and pick sc64-game.so, or push it with make push-android-module from the repository. After that, Select ROM. The APK is signed with a debug key (sideload only) and uses the Vulkan renderer.

Known limits

  • Only macOS arm64 has been used end to end. The Windows and Linux packages build and pass the package audit but have not been run on those systems (D-054, D-057).
  • The new start screen, button highlight and the module picker are tested with unit tests and off-screen renders; they have not been checked on a phone or on Windows/Linux (D-062, D-064).
  • Selecting a game module loads the picked file once to check it, so only pick a module you built yourself.
  • The Android launcher is landscape only.

Source

The executables statically link the GPL-3.0 N64ModernRuntime; SOURCE.txt and NOTICE.txt in every package name the source commit and licenses. This release is tag v0.1.0.
