SHA256SUMS.txt covers every file; the .sig files are the update signatures. Copy settings.example.toml next to the executable as settings.toml to start from a documented config. Binaries are not code-signed — Windows SmartScreen and macOS will warn on first launch.
Mowl v1.7.2
Fixed
- Tab on several list items. Selecting multiple list items and pressing
Tabdid nothing when the selection started at the first item of a list — the whole indent was refused and focus jumped out of the editor. Now the first item stays in place and the other selected items are indented under it. The selection is kept, soTabcan be pressed repeatedly.
Changed
- Source view indents with two spaces.
Tabin the raw Markdown view now inserts two spaces instead of a tab character (also when indenting several selected lines), matching how Mowl writes nested lists.Shift+Tabstill removes a tab or up to two spaces, so older files outdent as before.

Changed
- Export is now a menu. The Export button opens a small menu — As HTML… / As PDF… — just like New / Open, instead of the old yes/no dialog. The export shortcut opens the same menu.

Mowl v1.7.0
Added
- Self-update (Windows). About → Check for updates looks at the latest release here. A download is only accepted if its signature matches a key built into the app. The portable
Mowl.exeis replaced in place and restarted, installer builds run the new installer, and Scoop installs are pointed atscoop update mowl. Once a day at startup Mowl checks quietly and puts a dot on the About button when something is new — that is the only time it goes online by itself; switch it off under Settings → System or withauto_check_updates = false. (Copies older than 1.7.0 can't update themselves — install this one manually once.) - Configurable keyboard shortcuts — Settings → Shortcuts, or
[shortcuts]insettings.toml. Copy/paste/undo,Ctrl/Cmd+KandCtrl/Cmd+0–7stay fixed. - Raw HTML shown as content —
<img>(local paths,width/align, also wrapped in<div>/<p>/<a>),<kbd>,<a href>, collapsible<details>/<summary>,<div align="…">and<!--more-->. Display only: your Markdown is saved exactly as written. - Image toolbar — click an image to align it left/centre/right, scale it to 25 / 50 / 75 / 100 % of its original size, or remove it. An untouched image stays plain Markdown; once scaled or aligned it is saved as
<img src alt width align>(understood by GitHub and most renderers) and turns back into Markdown at the defaults. - Drag & drop — drop
.md/.markdown/.mdx/.txtfiles onto the window to open them. - Windows "Open with" — Settings → System → Register adds the portable exe to the "Open with" menu of Markdown files (per user, removable).
Changed
- Clearer icon for the Export button.
- README: centred header; all five languages cover the new features.
- Because file drops are now handled by the app on Windows, dragging selected text inside the editor may no longer work there.

Mowl v1.6.0
Fixed
- RTL blockquotes: the indent and vertical bar now flip to the right side in right-to-left documents instead of staying on the left.
- Source view (raw Markdown) now follows the document's LTR/RTL direction too, matching the WYSIWYG editor, instead of always being forced left-to-right.
Changed
- macOS and Linux builds are now available for real — the download section no longer says "coming soon."
- CI: fixed the Linux arm64 and macOS build legs, and made the checksums job draft-release aware.
Added
- Windows install via Scoop:
scoop bucket add naderi https://github.com/naderi/scoop-bucketthenscoop install naderi/mowl.
Mowl 1.5.0
Settings, in the app
A new settings screen opens from the toolbar button or Ctrl/Cmd+, — one control for every option, applied and saved as you change it. The commented settings.toml next to the executable still works exactly as before and is picked up live.
English and Deutsch
The interface is now available in English and German and follows the OS language by default. Switch it in the settings screen or with language = "system" | "en" | "de" in settings.toml.
Editing
- Block shortcuts —
Ctrl/Cmd+0–7turn the selection into Text, Heading 1–3, bullet list, numbered list, quote, or code block. The shortcuts are also shown in the⠿block menu. - Emoji — type
:tada:for 🎉, or pressCtrl/Cmd+.for a searchable picker. Native Unicode only, no downloads. always_show_tabbarsetting keeps the tab strip visible with a single file open.- Fixes: turning a heading directly into a list now works; the find/replace bar survives a language switch.

This release adds macOS and Linux builds alongside Windows:

SHA256SUMS.txt covers every file. Copy settings.example.toml next to the executable as settings.toml to start from a documented config.
The application identifier changed to com.alinaderi.mowl — on Windows, existing 0.1.x/1.2.x installs won't be upgraded in place; install this one alongside or uninstall the old one first. Portable users are unaffected.
Binaries are unsigned — macOS and Windows SmartScreen will warn on first launch.
Mowl 1.2.0
Block menu now formats multi-line selections (Text / Heading 1-3 / Quote / Code block / Bullet list / Numbered list), works whether the selected lines are plain paragraphs, list items, or lines inside a blockquote. Fixed repeated Quote clicks stacking nested blockquotes, and Bullet/Numbered list nesting inside an existing quote instead of replacing it. New app icon.
Windows x64 only for this release. Copy settings.example.toml to settings.toml next to the executable to customize fonts/theme/accent.
Mowl 0.1.1
Fixes the block-menu list-type toggle (Bullet ⇄ Numbered): converting a list to Bullet never actually stuck, because the change conflicted with the editor's own list-numbering sync logic — it was silently reverted right back to Numbered. This showed up most often on nested (indented) lists. Also scoped the block menu's actions on a nested list item to that item's own sub-list instead of the whole top-level list.
Windows
Mowl.exe— portable, no installMowl_0.1.1_x64-setup.exe— NSIS installer
settings.example.toml documents every setting; SHA256SUMS.txt has checksums for the two binaries.
Mowl 0.1.0
Mowl 0.1.0 — first Windows release.
A minimalist, portable WYSIWYG Markdown editor. Full feature list in the
README.
Downloads — Windows (x64)
| File | Notes |
|---|---|
Mowl.exe |
Portable — just run it, no installation. ~7 MB. |
Mowl_0.1.0_x64-setup.exe |
NSIS installer (also registers the .md file association). |
settings.example.toml |
Documented reference config — optional, see below. |
SHA256SUMS.txt |
Checksums for the three files above. |
macOS and Linux builds are planned for a later release.
Using settings.example.toml (optional)
Mowl runs fine without it. To start from a documented configuration:
- Copy
settings.example.tomlinto the same folder asMowl.exe. - Rename it to
settings.toml. - Edit it — Mowl applies changes within about a second, no restart needed.
If you skip this step, Mowl simply creates its own settings.toml in that
folder on first run.
Verifying the download
sha256sum -c SHA256SUMS.txt
Builds are not code-signed, so Windows SmartScreen may warn on first launch:
choose More info → Run anyway.
