Data Usage 0.1.0
The first release of Data Usage, a native Windows app that keeps a permanent history of how much data each app on your PC uses.
Windows already measures per-app data usage (Settings → Network & Internet → Data usage), but it keeps only a month or two, and a Windows reset erases even that. This app copies it into a SQLite database on another drive every hour, so the history survives. It is a native port of the Data Usage Dashboard web app, sharing its design and rules but no code.
What's in it
- Overview: all-time, 30-day, 7-day and latest-day totals; daily trend with spikes marked; activity heat map (Expand for the full history); daily traffic by app; hour of day; an optional "one app vs everything else" split; Wi-Fi against wired and per network.
- By App: the top 10 as download/upload bars, every app with its share, and a detail page per app with daily usage, hour of day, networks, merged programs and raw SRUM identities.
- Sync Status: last run, run history with errors, and both scheduled tasks as Windows reports them.
- Collection every 15 minutes, unelevated, reading SRUM hourly through Windows' own database engine (
esent.dll). The only elevated step is a shadow copy of the locked SRUM file, run bycmd.exeandesentutl.exewith arguments fixed when you approve the install. - Tray icon with the latest day's traffic, Sync now, notifications when collection fails or stalls, start at login, browser-style zoom (Ctrl+Plus/Minus/0, Ctrl+wheel), rename apps and set their logos in place.
Local only: no network calls, no telemetry, no account.
Install
Windows 10 (version 2004 or later) or Windows 11, x64. Nothing else is needed: the build carries its own .NET and Windows App SDK.

Download
DataUsage-0.1.0-win-x64.zipbelow and extract it. -
In the extracted folder, run:
powershell -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File .\Install.ps1
Pass
-DataDir <folder>to choose where the history is kept (the default isD:\PersistentData\data-usage-native; with noD:drive the app asks on first run). Keep it off the Windows drive, ideally in a folder a cloud client backs up. -
Windows asks for administrator approval once, to register the two scheduled tasks.
The app installs to %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Data Usage, with a Start menu entry and an entry in Settings → Apps → Installed apps to uninstall it. Uninstalling never deletes your history. After a Windows reset, reinstall with -DataDir pointing at the same folder and everything collected before the reset is back.
The app is not code-signed. Install.ps1 clears the "downloaded from the internet" mark on the files it installs, so SmartScreen does not stop each launch.
To build from source instead, see the README.
