Data Usage 0.2.1
The hourly copies of the Windows usage database move off the system drive.
Correction (2 October 2026). These notes first said this change fixes Fast Startup shutdowns that stall with the fans running. It does not. Measured since, those stalls came from the system SSD writing the hibernation image slowly (11-50 MB/s instead of ~700 MB/s) when its write cache was full, before and after this change alike. If your shutdowns do that, Windows records it as
HiberWriteDurationin the Power-Troubleshooter event at the next start; turning off Fast Startup or freeing space on the system drive is what helps.
What's changed
-
The SRUM copies are off the system drive. Every hourly read copied the ~99 MB SRUM database twice, plus its journals, onto
C:and deleted it again: about 5 GB a day of writes on the drive Windows runs from, often the smallest and fullest one. Both copies now live at the root of your data folder's drive, outside the synced data folder:
DataUsageNative-scratch, where the collector works. It is created with its own permissions (you, SYSTEM and Administrators), so other accounts on the PC cannot read it.DataUsageNative-snapshot\work, where the elevated task leaves its copy. Created admin-writable and user-readable in one step, and checked afterwards.
If the data folder is on
C:, or (for the snapshot) on a drive that is not NTFS, they stay in%LOCALAPPDATA%and%ProgramData%as before. -
The expanded heat map starts on your earliest day with data, rather than on 1 January 2026.
-
Light theme: hovered rows and never-collected heat-map days are now visible on white.
Install or update
Windows 10 (version 2004 or later) or Windows 11, x64. Nothing else is needed: the build carries its own .NET and Windows App SDK.

Download
DataUsage-0.2.1-win-x64.zipbelow and extract it. -
In the extracted folder, run:
powershell -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File .\Install.ps1
-
When updating, do not pass
-SkipTasksthis time. The scheduled tasks change: re-registering is what moves the snapshot folder and removes the old one from%ProgramData%. Windows asks for administrator approval once.
Your data folder is untouched. The app is not code-signed; Install.ps1 clears the "downloaded from the internet" mark on the files it installs.
