v0.57-fg2 · FSR 3 on RTX 20/30, AMD and Intel, steadier far shadows

@nakaionyt nakaionyt released this 17 Oct 17:08

Bring your own game files. No game file and no Sony firmware is included: you need your own PS4 dump of Shadow of the Colossus (CUSA08809, EU 1.01) and, for sound, libSceNgs2.sprx / libSceUlt.sprx from your own console.

Fixes in fg2

  • FSR 3 now works on RTX 20/30, AMD and Intel. On cards without DLSS Frame Generation the overlay stayed on FSR 3: waiting (no 3D scene) and no frame was generated. Tested with DLSS-G unavailable: 60.0 frames shown per second, one every 16–17 ms.
  • Far shadows: the reused far shadow cascades are redrawn when the game draws them twice before a frame is shown, which can happen on slower machines and showed as flickering shadows. If far shadows still look wrong, add SOTC_SHADOW_REUSE=0 in the launcher's Extra variables, and please open an issue with user\last_run.log.

Updating from fg1

Unzip over your existing SotC-PC folder and replace the files. Your saves, sound modules and shader cache are in user\ and stay as they are. To keep your settings, skip sotc.ini when you copy.

Everything from fg1

  • NVIDIA DLSS Frame Generation on RTX 40/50, AMD FSR 3 on any Vulkan 1.3 GPU: the 30 FPS lock shown at a steady 60.
  • F7 30 FPS cap on / off, F8 frame generation off → DLSS-G → FSR 3, F10 FPS overlay.
  • Far sun shadow cascades reused between frames (+17 to 22% FPS at the shrine).
  • Even frame pacing: a late game frame no longer drops the game to 15 FPS.

How to play

  1. Unzip SotC-PC_v0.57-fg2_bring-your-own-game-files.zip.
  2. Install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable 2015–2022 x64 if it is missing.
  3. Run SotC.exe, choose your game folder and your sound modules folder.
  4. Quick settings: Frame generation → Automatic, Uncapped FPS → unchecked for a steady 60.
  5. PLAY.

Known issues: restart the game before loading another save; water is dark or flat in places; FSR 3 is less tested on AMD and Intel. A full run with all 16 colossi has not been verified on this build yet.

SotC-PC_v0.57-fg2_source.zip is the complete source (GPL-2.0-or-later), submodules included.

Important

🗿 Bring your own game files

This download is the port only: there is no game and no Sony file inside. To play, bring:

  • 🎮 Your own PS4 dump of Shadow of the Colossus: CUSA08809, EU version 1.01 (the folder with eboot.bin).
  • 🔊 For sound: libSceNgs2.sprx and libSceUlt.sprx from your own console (/system/common/lib/). Without them the game runs fine, just silent.
  • 🧩 Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable 2015–2022 x64, if your PC doesn't have it yet (NVIDIA frame generation needs it).

Then: unzip → run SotC.exe → pick your game folder and your sound folder → PLAY. That's it. Have fun out there. 🐎

✨ What's new

On top of the 0.57-opt4 native port:

  • Frame generation: NVIDIA DLSS Frame Generation on RTX 40/50, AMD FSR 3 on any Vulkan 1.3 GPU (RTX 20/30, Radeon, Arc). The 30 FPS lock shows up as a steady 60.
  • F7: 30 FPS cap on / off, live, no restart.
  • F8: frame generation off → DLSS-G → FSR 3, live.
  • F10: FPS overlay with frame time graph and frame generation status.
  • Far sun shadows reused between frames: +17 to 22% FPS at the shrine.
  • Smoother pacing: a late frame no longer drops the game to 15 FPS.

🎛️ Best settings

In the launcher's Quick settings: Frame generation → Automatic (DLSS-G on RTX 40/50, FSR 3 elsewhere), Uncapped FPS → unchecked. You get a rock-steady 60. Want more? Press F7 in game to uncap.

Capped at 30 Uncapped (F7)
No frame generation 30, like on PS4 40–60
Frame generation (F8) 60, very even ← recommended 80–110

📊 Measured

Ryzen 7 5800X + RTX 4070 SUPER, 2560×1440, running through the open world:

Setting Game FPS On screen
30 FPS cap + FSR 3 30.0 60.0, one frame every 16–17 ms
30 FPS cap + DLSS-G 30.0 60, 0.04% late frames
Uncapped + FSR 3 40–50 80–113

The CPU does the heavy lifting: a fast single core matters most, the GPU is barely busy.

⚠️ Known issues

  • Restart the game before loading another save.
  • Water can look dark or flat in places.
  • FSR 3 was tested on NVIDIA; AMD and Intel feedback is very welcome in Issues.
  • A full run with all 16 colossi hasn't been verified on this build yet.
