Worm v1.0.5 — Fix a crash during cleaning

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 04 Oct 04:15

Fixed

  • Fixed a crash that could happen mid-clean. If the menu bar panel was left open in Telemetry mode while a clean was running, Worm could crash partway through (for example, stopping at "4 of 138 items"). The panel was reading live network info on every redraw, and the clean's constant progress updates triggered this far more often than normal use — eventually blocking and crashing the app.
Network info is now cached and fetched in the background instead of on every redraw, so cleaning no longer puts extra load on it.
  • Added internal self-test checks that specifically catch this class of bug (UI code blocking on background work), so it can't silently come back in a future update.

Notes

  • If Worm ever crashed for you around a clean finishing, this release should fix it. Please reopen an issue if you still see it after updating.

Worm v1.0.4: free, open-source Mac & Windows cleaner

Worm removes developer caches (Xcode DerivedData, npm, Homebrew, Cargo, Gradle, CocoaPods), browser caches and uninstalled-app leftovers, and shows live CPU, memory and disk stats. MIT licensed, no telemetry, fully offline.

Downloads

Platform File Notes
macOS 14+ (Apple Silicon & Intel) Worm-Installer.dmg Drag Worm.app to Applications. Includes Open-If-Blocked.command and a privacy guide.
macOS 14+ Worm-macOS.zip Portable Worm.app bundle.
Windows 10 / 11 (x64) Worm-Windows-x64.zip Extract, then double-click Install.cmd.

Verify downloads against SHA256SUMS.txt:

shasum -a 256 -c SHA256SUMS.txt

What's new

  • Windows is now a ZIP with an installer. Extract it and double-click Install.cmd. It needs no admin rights and opens no console window. It verifies the SHA256, clears the SmartScreen download mark, installs to %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Worm, adds Start-menu and Desktop shortcuts, and registers Worm under Settings → Apps.
  • There is no standalone Worm.exe any more. The single-file build of v1.0.2 exited before showing a window, because WPF cannot reliably read its XAML resources from inside a single-file bundle.
  • [confirm] Fixed: Windows launch crashes (XAML icon error and render out-of-memory error).
  • Windows crash details are written to crash.log next to Worm.exe in the install folder.

Install on macOS

  1. Open Worm-Installer.dmg and drag Worm.app into /Applications.
  2. If Gatekeeper blocks it, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway, or double-click Open-If-Blocked.command.
  3. Grant Full Disk Access so Worm can scan app containers thoroughly.

Install on Windows

  1. Extract Worm-Windows-x64.zip to a folder.
  2. Double-click Install.cmd.

Known issues

  • [confirm] The Windows build has had limited testing on real machines. If it fails to launch, please open an issue and attach crash.log.

Worm v1.0.3: free, open-source Mac & Windows cleaner

Worm removes developer caches (Xcode DerivedData, npm, Homebrew, Cargo, Gradle, CocoaPods), browser caches and uninstalled-app leftovers. It also shows live CPU, memory and disk stats. MIT licensed, no telemetry, fully offline.

Downloads

Platform File Notes
macOS 14+ (Apple Silicon & Intel) Worm-Installer.dmg Drag Worm.app to Applications. Includes Open-If-Blocked.command and a privacy guide.
macOS 14+ Worm-macOS.zip Portable Worm.app bundle.
Windows 10 / 11 (x64) Worm-Windows-x64.zip Includes Install-Worm.ps1, which verifies the Worm.exe checksum before installing.

Verify any download against SHA256SUMS.txt:

shasum -a 256 -c SHA256SUMS.txt

What's new

  • Fixed: the macOS app reported version 1.0.1 in Finder, even in v1.0.2. The build now takes the version from the release tag, so Worm.app correctly shows 1.0.3.
  • Windows installer script: Install-Worm.ps1 checks the Worm.exe checksum, then installs.
  • Smaller Windows package: unused satellite-locale files are removed.
  • Windows crash logging: if the app crashes on launch, the reason is now written to crash.log instead of the app closing silently.
  • Build diagnostics: CI now prints readable failure details in the job summary.

Known issues

  • The Windows build has been verified by compiling and by running the installer script, but has had limited testing on real Windows machines. If it fails to launch, please open an issue and attach crash.log.

Worm v1.0.1 — Ultra-Fast System Cleaner, Leftover Shredder & Hardware Monitor

Choose a tag to compare

@namdevnaman namdevnaman released this 02 Oct 07:39

Overview

Worm v1.0.1 is the initial public release of our native, open-source system optimizer, uninstalled application leftover shredder, and live hardware monitor designed specifically for macOS Sonoma (14.0+) and Sequoia (15.0+).

Engineered in pure Swift 6 and SwiftUI, Worm provides an ultra-lightweight alternative to bloated, closed-source system cleaners, delivering complete transparency, fail-safe user data protection, and zero background telemetry.

Key Highlights

1. Selective Deep Clean Engine

  • Comprehensive scan catalog targeting development build artifacts (Xcode DerivedData, archives, device logs, simulator runtimes).
  • Support for package managers and build tools including npm, pnpm, yarn, cargo, pip, go-build, gradle, and Homebrew.
  • Safe-by-default architecture: items are moved to macOS Trash rather than irreversibly purged.
  • Hard safety blocks: personal documents, photos, desktop folders, and active SIP-protected directories are permanently protected from removal.

2. Uninstalled Application Leftover Shredder

  • Automated orphan detector finds abandoned traces across Application Support, Preferences, Caches, Saved Application State, and WebKit data.
  • Positive absence verification ensures applications are genuinely uninstalled before marking files as safe to reclaim.

3. Real-Time Menu Bar & Hardware Metrics

  • Lightweight status item tracking live CPU load, active system process count, memory breakdown (App, Wired, Compressed), SSD storage capacity, and thermal activity.
  • Dual-action navigation: left-click for instant system status; right-click for quick settings and controls.

4. macOS Privacy and Permissions Guide

  • Integrated step-by-step assistance for macOS Full Disk Access (FDA) and Gatekeeper quarantine removal.
  • Transparent local activity audit log saved to ~/Library/Logs/Worm/deletions.tsv.

Installation & Setup

Method 1: Disk Image (.dmg)

  1. Download Worm-1.0.1.dmg from the assets below.
  2. Open the disk image and drag Worm.app into /Applications.
  3. Launch Worm. If macOS prompts that the developer cannot be verified:
    • Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Scroll to Security → Click "Open Anyway".
    • Alternatively, remove the quarantine attribute via Terminal:
      xattr -cr /Applications/Worm.app
  4. Grant Full Disk Access in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Full Disk Access to enable thorough container inspections.

Method 2: Build from Source

git clone https://github.com/namdevnaman/worm.git
cd worm
./scripts/build-app.sh
./scripts/install.sh
