v2.3.0
[2.3.0] — 2026-09-28
Schema: 33. Photos gain their location; the first timeline refresh after updating reads
the metadata of the whole library once (nothing is downloaded), and the Places view shows how
far it has got.
Added
- Places. A third Photos view groups photos by the town they were taken in, as cards or on a
world map. Towns are looked up offline in bundled GeoNames data (CC BY 4.0), and the map is
drawn offline from Natural Earth land outlines (public domain), so no map tiles are fetched.
Installiso-codes, a new optional dependency, for country names in your language. - On this day. A strip at the top of the timeline shows a card for every earlier year with
photos taken on today's date. - Find duplicates. Photos can list every set of byte-identical copies and move the copies
you don't keep to Trash. The copy in the most albums is kept by default. - Photos in no album. A filter narrows the timeline to photos no album holds yet.
- One Filters popover. Favorites, "in no album" and the month jump now share a Filters
button, which shows how many filters are on and can clear them all at once. - Zoom-level grouping and range select. Zooming out groups the timeline by month, then by
year. Shift+click selects a range, and dragging across the timeline selects what it sweeps. - Slideshow. The photo viewer plays the loaded photos full screen, with F5 or a top-bar
button. - App icon in the app. The sidebar header and the login page show the app's own icon.
Fixed
- Photos grid. The timeline is laid out as square tiles that fill the window's width
exactly, and a theme's owngtk.csscan no longer pad the tiles. It stays at its top, and at
the photo you were looking at, when the window is resized or zoomed. - Timeline shaking near the top. Scrolling up to the "On this day" strip no longer makes the
whole page jump between two heights. - Filters while loading. Changing a filter while a page was still loading could leave the
timeline showing the old filter.
