In July 2025, PubChem replaced the term of canonical SMILES by the one of connectivity SMILES (i.e. a SMILES string without information of stereochemistry, nor isotopic composition). The database replaced the term if isomeric SMILES by the one of absolute SMILES, too.
The Python wheel addresses this change and offers to search either by keyword SMILES (which, if assigned by the database can by an absolute, else defaults to a connectivity SMILES). Aiming for backward compatibility, the deprecated terms are still supported, too. Meanwhile (July 25 to August 4), the authoritative repository of pubchempy admitted numerous PRs; some of them equally correcting / refactoring the source code, or adding previously absent functionality and documentation on readthedocs. Thus, there are multiple details where source code provided by the root repository is ahead of the release here in this fork, which started/run under the theme of only closing the gap by the database's move.
Again, though developed in Linux Debian 13/trixie (Python 3.13), the wheel shared was built by a GitHub action, set up after passing the tests (of this fork here) with GitHub OS runners of Ubuntu 24.04.2, Windows server 2022, MacOS 14.7.6 across Python 3.10 to Python 3.13.
