Vidlark for Windows 0.2 beta
This is a beta. Vidlark for Windows is new. It records your face, your voice and your screen, but it has only been tried on a few PCs so far. Tell us what goes wrong, and keep a copy of any take that matters.
New in this version
Fixes found before the first test on a real laptop:
- A camera or microphone plugged in after Vidlark opens now shows up in the lists.
- If the camera stops sending pictures, Record turns off and Vidlark says what to check. It opens the camera again when it comes back.
- If finishing a take goes wrong, Vidlark says so instead of closing. The take's files are kept.
- The recording box has no pop-up hints, and the question asked when you close Vidlark during a take stays out of the video.
- The recording box is the right size when the shared screen is scaled differently from the main one.
Download and open it
- Download Vidlark-Windows.zip below.
- Right-click the zip, choose Extract All, then Extract.
- Open the Vidlark folder and double-click Vidlark.exe.
- The first time, Windows says "Windows protected your PC". That is because Vidlark is new and not signed yet. Click More info, then Run anyway.
It needs Windows 11, 64-bit. There is nothing else to install.
What works
- Your camera and microphone, recorded as camera.mov, after a 3, 2, 1 countdown.
- More microphones, each recorded to its own file.
- Share screen during a take: the whole screen or one window. Vidlark then shrinks to a small box with Me, Screen, the time and Stop.
- Me puts your camera across the whole screen. Screen shows the screen, with your face in a round bubble in the corner. You can drag the bubble, or take it out.
- The computer's own sound, such as a video you play, if you tick it. It can be switched on and off during the take.
- Vidlark's own windows never show in the video.
- After Stop, Vidlark lines up the camera and the screen and makes the finished video, video.mp4, with chapters and a short report.
- If the PC crashes, everything up to about the last 2 seconds is kept.
Takes are saved in C:\Users\Public\Videos\Vidlark Recordings.
Not in this beta yet
- The transcript: it needs a speech model that this beta does not download yet, so takes finish without one.
- Phones as cameras or microphones, and the live view.
- The prompter, face framing (the bubble shows the middle of the camera picture), and the Recordings and Settings pages.
- Sound from one app only. It is all of the computer's sound, or none.
