Releases: nefariousjosiah/WWE-SVR2008-RECOMP

v1.0.6

Choose a tag to compare

@nefariousjosiah nefariousjosiah released this 19 Oct 21:39

WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008 running natively on Windows, and on Linux and the Steam Deck through Proton: the game's code recompiled for PC, with a native renderer. 60 fps, up to 4K; 720p at 60 fps on the Steam Deck.

v1.0.6: play in Spanish, German or Italian

  • New Language option in the settings menu (F1): English, Español, Deutsch or Italiano. The game's text and menus switch the next time you start the game; the commentary stays in English.
  • Your disc already has these languages, but the game only ever showed English. (There's no French on the SvR 2008 disc.)
  • Switch right away: pick a language, then press A twice on it to restart the game straight into it (the first press asks to confirm, so a stray press can't restart a match).

Updating: on v0.2 or newer, open the settings menu, go down to Update and press A twice; your saves are kept and backed up first. On v0.1, download the zip below and extract it over your folder (your .iso and userdata stay where they are).

You need your own copy of the game: a disc image (.iso, about 7.8 GB) of your own SvR 2008 disc, USA / Europe release. None of the disc's files are in this download, and this project does not condone piracy.

Download

SVR2008-NATIVE.zip under Assets below (not Source code, which is the developer source).

Windows

  1. Extract the zip into a folder of its own (for example C:\Games\SVR2008-NATIVE).
  2. Copy your .iso into that folder, next to svr2008.exe.
  3. Run svr2008.exe (if Windows warns, More info > Run anyway). The game finds the disc image by itself and starts.

A controller is recommended: keyboard controls are included but not tested yet.

Linux / Steam Deck (Proton)

Extract the zip, copy your .iso into that folder next to svr2008.exe, add svr2008.exe to Steam as a non-Steam game with Proton Experimental, and start it (from Game Mode on the Deck). Step by step: README.

v1.0.5

Choose a tag to compare

@nefariousjosiah nefariousjosiah released this 18 Oct 18:55

WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008 running natively on Windows, and on Linux and the Steam Deck through Proton: the game's code recompiled for PC, with a native renderer. 60 fps, up to 4K; 720p at 60 fps on the Steam Deck.

v1.0.5: see what's new before you update

  • See what's new before you update: in the settings menu, the first press on Update now shows what the new version changes. Press again to install it.
  • The "Update available" notice at startup now says what the update is about, and shows for 7 seconds instead of 12.

WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008 running natively on Windows, and on Linux and the Steam Deck through Proton: the game's code recompiled for PC, with a native renderer. 60 fps, up to 4K; 720p at 60 fps on the Steam Deck.

v1.0.4: a new look for the settings menu

  • The settings menu (F1) has a new look: it now uses the same pixel font as the FPS counter, with a white title.
  • The menu now credits the port: PC port made by nefariousjosiah.

Updating: on v0.2 or newer, open the settings menu, go down to Update and press A twice; your saves are kept and backed up first. On v0.1, download the zip below and extract it over your folder (your .iso and userdata stay where they are).

v1.0.3 (hotfix)

Choose a tag to compare

@nefariousjosiah nefariousjosiah released this 17 Oct 13:30

WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008 running natively on Windows, and on Linux and the Steam Deck through Proton: the game's code recompiled for PC, with a native renderer. 60 fps, up to 4K; 720p at 60 fps on the Steam Deck.

v1.0.3 (hotfix): a Controllers setting

  • New setting: Controllers (settings menu: F1, or Back + Start on a controller, Share + Options on PlayStation).
    • Separate players (the default, same as before): each controller is its own player, for local multiplayer.
    • All on player 1: every controller controls player 1. Use this if you play alone and the game says player 2 is disconnected, or your controller stops responding. A controller that reconnects, or shows up twice through Steam Input / DS4Windows / DSX, can otherwise become player 2.
  • For local multiplayer, keep Controllers on Separate players.

Updating: on v0.2 or newer, open the settings menu, go down to Update and press A twice; your saves are kept and backed up first. On v0.1, download the zip below and extract it over your folder (your .iso and userdata stay where they are).

v1.0.2 (hotfix)

Choose a tag to compare

@nefariousjosiah nefariousjosiah released this 12 Oct 21:54

WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008 running natively on Windows, and on Linux and the Steam Deck through Proton: the game's code recompiled for PC, with a native renderer. 60 fps, up to 4K; 720p at 60 fps on the Steam Deck.

v1.0.2 (hotfix): the built-in AMD graphics fix now actually applies

  • Fixed: v1.0.1 didn't actually apply its fix. v1.0.1 was meant to stop using a special shared-memory heap for the game's geometry on built-in AMD graphics on Windows, which can crash those chips at startup. But the renderer never read the new default, so the heap stayed on. It now reads the setting directly: the heap is off by default, and bd_geometry_gpu_upload = true in the config turns it back on for anyone who wants it. Most desktop graphics cards never used that heap, so nothing changes for them.

Updating: on v0.2 or newer, open the settings menu, go down to Update and press A twice; your saves are kept and backed up first. On v0.1, download the zip below and extract it over your folder (your .iso and userdata stay where they are).

v1.0.1 (hotfix)

Choose a tag to compare

@nefariousjosiah nefariousjosiah released this 12 Oct 17:44

WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008 running natively on Windows, and on Linux and the Steam Deck through Proton: the game's code recompiled for PC, with a native renderer. 60 fps, up to 4K; 720p at 60 fps on the Steam Deck.

v1.0.1 (hotfix): no startup crash on built-in AMD graphics

  • Fixed: the game crashing right at startup on built-in AMD graphics on Windows (handhelds like the ROG Ally X, and laptops with "AMD Radeon(TM) Graphics"), in both Direct3D 12 and Vulkan. It was reported on SvR 2010, which shares this renderer. The renderer put the game's static geometry in a special shared-memory heap whenever the graphics driver offered it, and on those chips that crashed at the first frame. It now uses the normal upload heap, the same one desktop graphics cards always use. On built-in graphics both live in the same memory anyway, so nothing is lost. (For testing, it can still be turned back on with bd_geometry_gpu_upload = true in the config.)

Updating: on v0.2 or newer, open the settings menu, go down to Update and press A twice; your saves are kept and backed up first. On v0.1, download the zip below and extract it over your folder (your .iso and userdata stay where they are).

v1.0

Choose a tag to compare

@nefariousjosiah nefariousjosiah released this 11 Oct 16:52

WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008 running natively on Windows, and on Linux and the Steam Deck through Proton: the game's code recompiled for PC, with a native renderer. 60 fps, up to 4K; 720p at 60 fps on the Steam Deck.

v1.0: a massive performance update, and a new renderer as the default

SvR 2008 catches up with the 2009 and 2010 ports, with everything they learned:

Direct3D 12 is now the default renderer on Windows. The game now has two renderers. svr2008.exe draws with Direct3D 12, and on the Steam Deck and Linux it starts svr2008_vulkan.exe (Vulkan) by itself, so Deck players don't need to change anything. You can switch in the settings menu (F1, Back + Start, or Share + Options on PlayStation) under Graphics API: Auto, Direct3D 12 or Vulkan. If a PC can't start Direct3D 12 at all, the game falls back to Vulkan by itself.

A steady 60 fps on lower-end PCs: a GTX 1060 with an i7-8700 now holds a solid 60.

  • Far less work per frame. The graphics driver's work runs on its own thread, and textures, geometry and shader settings are only sent again when they change. The crowd, drawn in thousands of small pieces, used to cost the most on slower processors.
  • No first-time stutters. Every shader variant is prepared when the game is built (1,142 of them), and the graphics pipelines the game uses are compiled in the background while each scene loads, not in the middle of an entrance. The download includes the pipelines a play session uses.
  • New setting: CPU priority. High lets the game go first when other programs (browser, recording, downloads) want the processor too.
  • Laptops: Auto resolution renders at 720p on built-in graphics (Intel UHD / Iris Xe, the Radeon in Ryzen laptops). Laptops with two graphics chips now run the game on their dedicated graphics card.
  • The settings menu shows what Auto picked, for example Auto (1440p) or Auto (Direct3D 12).

Fixes:

  • Sharper image: the game's own edge-blur filter (the console's cheap anti-aliasing, which smeared hair, tattoos, ropes and the crowd) is off; the higher internal resolution smooths edges instead. svr_edge_blur = true in svr2008.toml brings the original look back.
  • NVIDIA graphics cards: objects the game "cuts out" by their transparency no longer come out speckled. NVIDIA rounds a fully opaque value a hair under 1.0, and the port now compares at the console's 8-bit precision.
  • Wrong textures after scene changes: when the game reused a texture slot for a different picture, the old picture could stay on screen; it's rebuilt now.
  • game.log is now always written next to svr2008.exe, even when the game is started from Steam or another folder.

None of the disc's files are in this download, and this project does not condone piracy.

v0.2.1

Choose a tag to compare

@nefariousjosiah nefariousjosiah released this 11 Oct 01:22

WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008 running natively on Windows, and on Linux and the Steam Deck through Proton: the game's code recompiled for PC, with a native Vulkan renderer. 60 fps, up to 4K; 720p at 60 fps on the Steam Deck.

v0.2.1: PlayStation controllers open the settings menu

  • Share + Options on a PlayStation controller (DualSense, DualShock 4) now opens the settings menu, and the d-pad / left stick, Cross and Circle work inside it. Before, only Xbox-style controllers could open it (Back + Start), so PlayStation players had to use F1 on the keyboard. Switch Pro and other controllers the game supports work too.
  • Tip: if a second player shows up with one controller plugged in, an app on your PC (Steam Input, DS4Windows, DSX) is also presenting it as an Xbox controller. Close that app or turn off its Xbox emulation; this port reads PlayStation controllers directly.

Updating: open the settings menu, go down to Update and press A (Cross) twice; your saves are kept and backed up first. On v0.1 or older, download the zip below and extract it over your folder (your .iso and userdata stay where they are).

You need your own copy of the game: a disc image (.iso, about 7.8 GB) of your own SvR 2008 disc, USA / Europe release. None of the disc's files are in this download, and this project does not condone piracy.

Download

Step by step: README.

v0.2

Choose a tag to compare

@nefariousjosiah nefariousjosiah released this 10 Oct 20:50

WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008 running natively on Windows, and on Linux and the Steam Deck through Proton: the game's code recompiled for PC, with a native Vulkan renderer. 60 fps, up to 4K; 720p at 60 fps on the Steam Deck.

v0.2: updates from inside the game, when you choose

This port gets regular updates, and from this version on you don't have to come back here for them:

  • At startup the game checks, in the background, whether a newer version is out. If there is one, a notice appears for a few seconds. Nothing is downloaded yet.
  • To update, open the settings menu (F1, or Back + Start on a controller, View + Menu on the Steam Deck), go down to Update and press A (or Enter), then once more to confirm. The game backs up your saves, downloads and checks the new version, installs it, and offers Restart now.
  • Your saves are safe. The userdata folder (saves, profiles, created superstars) is never changed, and before every update your saves are also copied to a save_backups folder in the game's folder. Your settings and your disc image are kept too. If anything goes wrong partway, the update stops and the version you had is put back.
  • Don't want it? Set Check for updates to Off in the settings menu, and the game never goes online. The check only asks GitHub for this project's latest release; nothing about you or your PC is sent.

The settings menu now also shows which version you're running.

This one update is by hand: v0.1 doesn't have the updater yet. Download v0.2 below and extract it over your current folder (your .iso and userdata stay where they are), or into a new folder and copy those two across. After that, updates come through the game.

You need your own copy of the game: a disc image (.iso, about 7.8 GB) of your own SvR 2008 disc, USA / Europe release. None of the disc's files are in this download, and this project does not condone piracy.
